San Diego airport transfersThe right shape for a day in Downtown San Diego with several stops. The car waits between meetings, and parking is not your problem.
Hourly chauffeur in San DiegoLos Angeles, Orange County and Anaheim, Temecula wine country and beyond, door to door, with your luggage staying in the car the entire way.
Intercity rides from San DiegoPort of San Diego, timed to embarkation windows rather than to the clock, with luggage handling included.
San Diego cruise transfersA San Diego chauffeur service is pre-arranged ground transport booked ahead at a fixed price, carried out by a licensed for-hire operator. It is not hailed on the street and not dispatched on demand. The vehicle, the chauffeur and the price are all settled before the day of travel, whether the booking is a SAN airport transfer, an hourly car service or a black car to a morning meeting.
In practice that distinction decides what happens when things go wrong. A metered taxi and a surge-priced app both re-price themselves when traffic turns or the weather does. A reserved San Diego car service booking does not. The number you agreed is the number you pay, and it already contains the tolls, the airport access fees and the taxes.
The same reservation covers the rest of the region: McClellan-Palomar transfers, Montgomery-Gibbs Executive transfers, Tijuana via Cross Border Xpress transfers, and a car service to Los Angeles when the trip runs further out. For companies moving people through the city regularly, corporate travel in San Diego adds central billing and duty-of-care reporting on top of the same fleet.
Which one is right depends far more on where you are going than on which is nearest. Each has its own page with terminal detail and pickup arrangements.
| Airport | Distance | Typical drive, off-peak | Typical drive, peak | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Diego InternationalSAN | 3 miles | 10 to 20 min | 20 to 35 min | Everything, and the closest major airport to its downtown in America |
| McClellan-PalomarCLD | 35 miles | 35 to 50 min | 55 to 90 min | North County, Carlsbad and the biotech corridor |
| Montgomery-Gibbs ExecutiveMYF | 10 miles | 20 to 30 min | 30 to 50 min | General aviation in the centre of the county |
| Tijuana via Cross Border XpressTIJ | 20 miles | 30 to 45 min | 45 to 80 min | Mexican domestic and Asia-Pacific routes, via the CBX bridge |
| Gillespie FieldSEE | 18 miles | 25 to 40 min | 40 to 65 min | General aviation in East County |
Drive times are door to door from the arrivals kerb, not gate to gate, and they assume a direct private vehicle rather than a shared shuttle. Peak means roughly 07:00 to 10:00 and 15:30 to 19:30 on a weekday.
San Diego has the shortest major airport transfer in the country and a border crossing that has quietly become one of its most useful pieces of infrastructure.
Lindbergh Field sits three miles from downtown on the harbour, which makes the standard transfer ten to twenty minutes. It also means the airport is small, hemmed in, and has a single main roadway that congests quickly. Pre-arranged pickup works from designated zones on the terminal roadways, and during busy periods that arrangement is worth more than the short distance suggests.
The Cross Border Xpress is the genuinely distinctive thing here. It is a pedestrian bridge at Otay Mesa connecting a terminal on the American side directly to Tijuana International Airport, and it lets travellers use TIJ's Mexican domestic network and its Asia-Pacific routes without a conventional border crossing. Passengers need a valid ticket from Tijuana and appropriate travel documents, and the bridge has its own fee. Transfers to and from the CBX terminal are a routine booking here, and they need to be arranged as such rather than as a generic drop-off, because the timing works backwards from the flight and the bridge crossing.
Conventional crossings into Tijuana are a different proposition. Northbound waits at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa vary from twenty minutes to well over two hours and no operator controls them. If your booking crosses the land border, say so when you book, because not every vehicle and chauffeur is cleared for it.
Comic-Con in July is the demand event that defines this market's calendar. It fills the city, closes streets around the convention centre and takes every vehicle in the county off the market. The Del Mar racing season in summer and the biotech corridor's conference calendar do smaller versions of the same thing.
Details above were checked against public sources at the time of writing. Rates, terminal assignments and construction timelines in this section change faster than any website updates, so treat your chauffeur's message on the day as the authority.
Published transfer times are usually the best case. These are ranges, and the upper end happens often enough to plan around.
| Route | Off-peak | Weekday peak | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAN to Downtown and the Gaslamp | 10 to 20 min | 20 to 35 min | Harbor Drive, and it really is that short |
| SAN to La Jolla | 20 to 30 min | 30 to 55 min | I-5 north, the coast and the university |
| SAN to Coronado | 15 to 25 min | 25 to 45 min | Over the bridge, which is the whole journey |
| SAN to Carlsbad and North County | 35 to 50 min | 55 to 95 min | I-5 north, and the afternoon northbound is slow |
| SAN to the Cross Border Xpress | 25 to 35 min | 40 to 70 min | South to Otay Mesa and the bridge into Tijuana airport |
| SAN to Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe | 25 to 40 min | 45 to 75 min | The racing season changes this one entirely |
Each route above has its own page with pricing by vehicle class, the roads actually used and the times worth avoiding.
Intercity runs are priced as one fixed fare for the whole journey, not per hour, so the traffic is our problem rather than yours.

| Temecula wine country | 60 miles | 1h to 1h 30 | Usually booked hourly as a day |

Embarkation day luggage runs heavier than air travel for the same trip length, because there is no airline weight limit pushing back. Size one class above your instinct and read the guidance on San Diego cruise transfers before you book.
The chauffeur meeting you is dispatched by an operator based here, not routed in from another market.
The capacity below is the honest number, not the manufacturer maximum. Carrying full-size cases, take the next class up.

No meter, no surge multiplier, and no line item that appears after the ride is over.
The airport is three miles from downtown. If you are staying in the Gaslamp or Little Italy and travelling light, a taxi or a rideshare is a sensible booking and the difference is small. The MTS Route 992 bus also runs from the terminals to downtown for very little.
A chauffeur earns its price for North County, where Carlsbad and Rancho Santa Fe are a real distance and the afternoon I-5 is slow. It earns it for CBX transfers where the timing and the documentation matter, for Comic-Con week when the city stops functioning normally, for groups, for cruise mornings, and for the Los Angeles and Orange County runs where the drive is long enough that a meter becomes uncomfortable.
The full cost and time comparison against the meter is on San Diego taxi versus chauffeur.
The terminal assignment, the pickup zone that moved last month, the parking permit for that garage. None of it reaches you.

It depends far more on your destination than on distance. San Diego International (SAN), McClellan-Palomar (CLD), Tijuana via Cross Border Xpress (TIJ) are the main options, and the drive times differ enough that the cheapest ticket is often not the cheapest arrival. The table above sets out distance and typical drive time for each, and every airport has its own page with terminal detail and pickup arrangements.
In the designated pre-arranged pickup area for your terminal, with the chauffeur calling as you reach the doors. Pickup zones at SAN change during construction and reorganisation, so the operator confirms the current meeting point on the morning of your flight rather than relying on anything printed in advance. Being met inside arrivals on your name is a paid add-on.
Between 10 to 20 min off-peak and 20 to 35 min in weekday peak traffic, door to door from the arrivals kerb. Published figures shorter than that usually describe a quiet Sunday morning. Each route from the airport has its own page with the roads used and the times worth avoiding.
Yes. Bridge, tunnel and expressway tolls, express lane charges, airport access fees and taxes are all inside the price quoted at the time of booking. Ride-hailing apps and taxis add these to your fare per trip, which is why two apparently similar quotes can settle very differently at the end of the ride.
Yes. Every vehicle is run by a for-hire operator licensed in its own jurisdiction, with licensing and insurance verified before they can take a booking rather than checked per ride.
Sixty minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time, tracked against the aircraft rather than the schedule, which covers immigration, baggage and customs. Every other pickup includes 15 minutes. Beyond the free window, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the vehicle class rate and you are told before it starts.
At least 3 hours before pickup so the operator can assign and brief a chauffeur, though RYDES takes reservations up to a year out. For group vehicles and for the busy weeks noted above, book as early as you can, because availability runs out long before price becomes the problem.
Add your flight number and we track the aircraft. A delay moves your pickup automatically and costs nothing, with free waiting starting at the actual landing time. A diversion is handled by dispatch, who will re-brief a chauffeur to the new field where the operator has coverage. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
Yes, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. The chauffeur waits between stops and nothing runs while you are inside a meeting. Once a day involves three or more stops, hourly hire is usually cheaper than separate transfers once you count the waiting you would have done anyway.
Yes, and it is a routine booking here. The CBX is a pedestrian bridge at Otay Mesa connecting directly into Tijuana International Airport, and it needs to be booked as a CBX transfer rather than a general drop-off so the timing works backwards from your flight and the bridge crossing. You need a valid ticket from Tijuana, appropriate travel documents and the bridge's own fee, which is separate from your transfer.
With notice at booking, yes, but it has to be arranged rather than requested on the day because not every vehicle and chauffeur is cleared for the crossing. Every passenger needs a valid passport or equivalent. Northbound waits at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa run from twenty minutes to well over two hours and are outside anyone's control, so allow for them generously on a return.
Yes, with as much notice as possible. Comic-Con in July fills San Diego completely, closes streets around the convention centre and the Gaslamp, and commits every vehicle in the county months in advance. Pickup points around the convention centre are controlled during the event and are confirmed to you on the day rather than in advance.
