What is a Vienna chauffeur service?

A Vienna chauffeur service is a car and driver reserved in advance at a fixed euro price, operated by a company holding the Austrian taxi Konzession issued by the Magistrat der Stadt Wien under the Gelegenheitsverkehrs-Gesetz 1996, with a driver who holds a Taxilenkerausweis. In Austria a chauffeur car and a taxi hold the same licence; what differs is how the trip is booked and priced. A RYDES booking, whether a Vienna airport transfer, an hourly car service in Vienna or a black car to a Ringstrasse hotel, fixes the vehicle class, pickup, destination and price before the day.

That fixed price is something Austrian law specifically allows. For a journey ordered in advance through a booking service, the operator may agree a price with you that cannot be exceeded, with no taximeter running. Inside Vienna the city sets a band around its regulated comparison fare, and the run to the airport in Schwechat leaves the city tariff altogether. A reserved Vienna car service quote already carries the 10 percent VAT, the motorway vignette and any short-stay charge at the airport, so the figure on the confirmation is the figure you pay.

The same booking reaches well past the Gürtel: the Vienna International Centre for UN, IAEA and OPEC business, Schönbrunn, Grinzing and Klosterneuburg, the spa town of Baden bei Wien, and the Danube valley around Dürnstein. The Vienna taxi alternative page compares the two, and corporate travel in Vienna adds central invoicing for delegations.

Every airport that serves Vienna.

Almost every arrival comes through Schwechat, just outside the city in Lower Austria. Private aircraft use their own terminal there, and Bratislava across the border is the alternative worth knowing.

Drive times are door to door for a direct private car. Peak means roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 15:30 to 19:00 on weekdays. Opera Ball night, the City Marathon and December market evenings sit outside both columns. Bratislava times are measured from VIE rather than the city, and the crossing into Slovakia is confirmed at booking.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

Schwechat is a single airport campus with four terminal buildings, two of which have no check-in at all. Knowing which is which saves a walk in the wrong direction.

Vienna International Airport.

VIE handled a record 32.6 million passengers in 2025 and expects around 30 million in 2026. Terminal 3 is the home of Austrian Airlines and the Star Alliance, with Piers F and G. Terminal 1 serves most other carriers, and Terminal 1A, the standalone building opposite it that reopened in April 2025, handles check-in for Condor, SunExpress and some others. Terminal 2 has no check-in: it holds the security and baggage reclaim for Piers C and D.

Your chauffeur names the meeting point in the message sent before you land. The free default is the arrivals exit or short-term car park K3, a few metres from the doors, at €6.00 an hour that sits inside your price. The airport also runs an official taxi rank and City Transfer counters inside the hall, and it warns passengers not to go with drivers who approach them there. Times for the drive in are on VIE to the Innere Stadt.

  • Arrivals exit or K3, the free defaultYour chauffeur waits at the point named in the pre-arrival message, usually the short-term car park a few metres from the exit.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onChauffeur inside the arrivals hall with your name, useful after a long-haul arrival or with a family and a trolley of cases.

General Aviation Center.

Private and charter flights at Schwechat are handled at the General Aviation Center. Jet Aviation runs an FBO there at Steinriegelweg 1, open around the clock, and Vienna Aircraft Handling operates the VIP and general aviation terminal. Your chauffeur waits at the handler's building, not the passenger terminals.

Give us the tail number or handling agent when you book. If your party needs a particular language, request it in the booking notes and the operator confirms whether it can be met.

Bratislava, across the border.

Bratislava airport is 72 km by road from VIE and close to the Slovak capital. It matters mainly for low-cost fares and for meetings in Bratislava itself.

Austria extended its checks at the Slovak border to 15 September 2026, and whether they continue after that date is not confirmed. Carry a passport or national ID card on any crossing. Cross-border runs need an operator able to carry passengers on both sides, so they are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. City-centre timings are on VIE to Bratislava.

Terminal and pickup facts above were checked against public airport information in October 2026. The Terminal 3 Southern Extension, with 18 more gates and a new central security area, is planned for 2027 and may move walking routes when it opens. Treat the chauffeur's message as the authority on where to go.

Fares, VAT and the vignette.

Vienna has no congestion charge. What shapes a fare here is the state taxi tariff, the reduced VAT rate on passenger transport, the motorway vignette and the airport's short-stay parking, and each reaches you differently depending on how you book.

The Landeshauptmann sets Vienna's taxi tariff by ordinance. It last changed in 2023: a base fare of €3.80 by day and €4.30 at night, on Sundays and on public holidays, then €0.95 a kilometre for the first 5 km and €0.58 a kilometre after that, with €2 added when the taxi is ordered through a phone or app service. For trips booked in advance, the operator may instead agree a fixed price up to 20 percent below or above that comparison fare. Journeys to the airport leave the city for Lower Austria and fall outside the city tariff, which is why airport fares vary so much between companies. RYDES quotes a fixed price at booking, as Austrian law allows, within any band the state sets for that trip.

That band has been argued over. On 26 November 2025 more than 2,000 Vienna taxi drivers drove in convoy against app operators and the 20 percent band, and around 1,200 protested again on 9 December 2025. In May 2026 the taxi trade group asked for a new tariff and stricter driver exams, and in September 2026 the city said a tariff update is being prepared.

Passenger transport in Austria carries the reduced 10 percent VAT rate, and on a cross-border trip only the Austrian kilometres are taxed. The A4 towards the airport and every other motorway needs a vignette, which in 2026 costs €9.60 for a day or €12.80 for ten days. Both are inside a RYDES price, along with the K3 charge while your chauffeur waits at VIE. Paid parking you ask for elsewhere is the one thing outside it.

Some Vienna taxi companies sell booked flat fares to the airport, for example €37 to €42 for up to four people, and for one or two travellers with light bags that can be the cheaper choice. A RYDES booking adds a chosen vehicle class, flight tracking and a free hour at arrivals. The full comparison is on Vienna taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

The Südosttangente, the A23, carries about 230,000 vehicles a day on its Prater stretch, more than any other road in Austria, and most airport runs touch it or the A4 feeding it. These ranges allow for that.

Winter matters less than in the Alps, but it still counts: from 1 November to 15 April a car may only drive in wintry conditions on winter tyres, and operators equip theirs for the route. The S1 Lobau tunnel will eventually change trips to the northeast of the city, but its tunnel section is not expected before about 2030. For a departure you cannot miss on a weekday evening, plan on the peak column.

Leaving town.

Intercity runs carry one fixed fare for the whole journey rather than an hourly rate, so a slow A1 on a Friday afternoon is the operator's concern, not yours.

What the Vienna price contains.

No taximeter, no surge, and nothing added to the bill once you have stepped out.

VAT and road charges
The 10 percent VAT on passenger transport and the motorway vignette for the route are inside the euro figure you agree. On cross-border trips, Austrian VAT applies to the Austrian kilometres only.
The airport short-stay charge
While your chauffeur waits for you in VIE's K3 short-term car park, the hourly charge is the operator's and is already counted in the price.
Gratuity is your choice
The chauffeur accepted this trip at an agreed rate, so their pay does not depend on a tip. You are offered one once at payment, and declining is fine.
Flight tracking
Send the flight number with the booking and dispatch follows the aircraft, so an early or late arrival moves the pickup without a charge.
An hour at VIE
Sixty minutes of free waiting begins at the actual landing time, enough for passport control and the baggage belt. Other pickups include fifteen free minutes.
Standard pickup
Collection at the arrivals exit or short-term car park your chauffeur names costs nothing extra. Being met inside the hall with a name sign is a paid add-on.
Free cancellation
Any booking can be changed or cancelled without charge until 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours it is charged in full, since a car and chauffeur are already held for you.
A licensed Austrian operator
Every Vienna booking is carried out by a company holding the taxi Konzession from the Magistrat der Stadt Wien or its district authority, with drivers who hold a Taxilenkerausweis. RYDES arranges the trip; the operator drives it.
Child seats and pets
Child seats are a paid add-on, supplied on request and fitted by the parent. Pets are a paid add-on too. Service animals always ride free.
What is not included
Paid parking you ask for at a stop other than the airport pickup. Everything else sits inside the quote.

When you should not book us.

Vienna's airport rail link is fast and cheap, and even with the current works it often beats a car.

The S-Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof is closed from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027, so the City Airport Train runs as premium buses until 31 October 2027. They leave from in front of Terminal 3 arrivals and reach Wien Mitte at Marxergasse 1b in about 21 minutes, every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00 and every 15 minutes otherwise, with the last bus from the airport at 23:37. A single is €14.90, a return €24.90, and under-15s travel free. The S7 now runs only as far as St. Marx, about 18 minutes, where you change to a tram or bus, on a €5.50 ticket.

Best of all for a solo traveller staying near the main station: ÖBB Railjet and ICE trains run nonstop from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof twice an hour in about 15 minutes. Travelling alone with a carry-on to a hotel there, it is hard to beat. Vienna Airport Bus lines run to Hauptbahnhof and Westbahnhof (about 40 minutes), Schwedenplatz (about 22), the VIC and Kaisermühlen, and from September 2026 Karlsplatz and Praterstern.

A chauffeur is worth its price for different reasons: more luggage than an escalator welcomes, three or more people, small children, a landing after the last bus, a door the trains do not reach such as Grinzing, Klosterneuburg or Baden, several stops in a day, or a ball gown at two in the morning. That covers most bookings, not all travel, and we would rather say so. The cost and time comparison is on Vienna taxi versus chauffeur.

Vienna questions.

Is a chauffeur car in Vienna licensed differently from a taxi?

No. Since the reform of the Gelegenheitsverkehrs-Gesetz on 1 January 2021, Austria has one licence for paid passenger transport by car, the Personenbeförderungsgewerbe mit Pkw – Taxi. The former hire-car trade for cars was merged into it, so every pre-booked chauffeur car, including luxury cars, runs under the same Konzession as a taxi, granted in Vienna by the Magistrat der Stadt Wien. Every driver holds a Taxilenkerausweis, renewed every five years after training and an exam that includes local knowledge. What differs is how the trip is booked and priced. See Vienna taxi versus chauffeur.

How is a fixed price allowed when Vienna has a taxi tariff?

Austrian law, §14(1b) of the Gelegenheitsverkehrs-Gesetz, lets an operator agree a fixed price for a trip booked in advance through a booking service, with pickup and destination set, that cannot be exceeded and needs no taximeter. Vienna permits pre-booked fares up to 20 percent below or above its regulated comparison fare. Trips to the airport in Lower Austria fall outside the city tariff. RYDES quotes a fixed price at booking within any band the state sets for that trip.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Vienna airport?

At the point named in the message your chauffeur sends before you land, usually the arrivals exit or short-term car park K3, a few metres from the arrivals doors. That standard pickup is free and the car park charge is inside your price. Being met inside the arrivals hall with a name sign is a paid add-on. Do not go with drivers who approach you in the hall; the airport itself warns against it. See Vienna airport transfers.

Which terminal at VIE is my flight?

Austrian Airlines and most Star Alliance airlines use Terminal 3, with Piers F and G. Most other carriers use Terminal 1, and Terminal 1A, opposite Terminal 1, handles check-in for Condor, SunExpress and some others. Terminal 2 has no check-in; it holds security and baggage reclaim for Piers C and D. Check your boarding pass on the day.

How long does it take from VIE to the city centre?

About 20 to 30 minutes off-peak to the Innere Stadt, the Hotel Sacher or the Hotel Imperial, and 35 to 50 minutes in weekday rush hours. The airport is about 20 km from the centre, and the A4 and A23 Südosttangente decide most of the variation. See VIE to the Innere Stadt.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport charges included?

Yes. The 10 percent VAT on passenger transport, the motorway vignette for the route and the short-term car park charge while your chauffeur waits at VIE are all inside the euro price agreed at booking. The one thing outside it is paid parking you ask for at another stop. See Vienna car service.

Is the CAT still the fastest way into Vienna?

Not at the moment. With the S-Bahn trunk line closed from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, the City Airport Train runs as buses from outside Terminal 3 arrivals to Wien Mitte, Marxergasse 1b, in about 21 minutes for €14.90 single. ÖBB Railjet and ICE trains reach Wien Hauptbahnhof nonstop in about 15 minutes, twice an hour, and for a solo traveller with light luggage going to a hotel there, they are hard to beat.

Is a taxi from the airport cheaper than a chauffeur?

It can be. Taxis from the official rank at VIE run on the meter with no fixed fare, because the airport sits outside the Vienna tariff area, and some taxi companies sell booked flat fares to the airport, for example €37 to €42 for up to four people. A RYDES booking costs what you agreed, includes 60 minutes of free waiting after landing and gives you the vehicle class you chose. Compare on Vienna taxi alternative.

How much waiting time do I get at Vienna airport?

Sixty minutes free from the actual landing time, tracked against the aircraft, which covers passport control and baggage. Every other pickup includes 15 minutes. After the free window, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the vehicle class rate, and you are told before it starts.

Do you serve the Vienna International Centre and UN City?

Yes. The VIC is about 21.7 km from VIE, usually 20 to 28 minutes off-peak and 30 to 45 minutes at peak across the A23. Delegations at the IAEA General Conference each September, or at UN, IAEA, OPEC and OSCE meetings, often book by the hour so the car waits between sessions. See Vienna International Centre transfers and VIE to the VIC.

Can I book a car for the Opera Ball or another Vienna ball?

Yes, and early booking matters. The ball season opens on 11 November and runs to Carnival, with more than 450 balls a season, and the Vienna Opera Ball falls on Thursday 4 February 2027. Most guests book by the hour so the return time can stay open; the two-hour minimum applies, in 30-minute increments. See Opera Ball transportation.

Can you take me to Bratislava or Bratislava airport?

Usually, confirmed at booking. Bratislava city is about 63 km from VIE and Bratislava airport about 72 km, so 45 minutes to an hour and 20 minutes depending on the destination and traffic, plus any border check. Austria extended checks at the Slovak border to 15 September 2026 and their status after that is unconfirmed, so every passenger should carry a passport or ID card. See VIE to Bratislava and VIE to Bratislava airport.

Do you drive to the Wachau, Semmering, Budapest or Salzburg?

Yes, each priced as one fixed fare to the address you give. Dürnstein in the Wachau and Semmering are each about 102 km from VIE, roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 50. Budapest is about 229 km and is confirmed at booking as a cross-border run; Salzburg is about 322 km on the A1. See Vienna to Dürnstein, Vienna to Semmering, Vienna to Budapest and Vienna to Salzburg.

Can I hire a chauffeur by the hour in Vienna?

Yes. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum and is billed in 30-minute increments. The car waits between stops, which suits ministry meetings, a day at the VIC or a concert and dinner. Paid parking at a stop is the only cost outside the quote. See hourly chauffeur hire in Vienna.

How far ahead should I book in Vienna?

At least 3 hours before pickup so the operator can assign and brief a chauffeur, and up to a year ahead. Book early for the ball season from 11 November, the Rathausplatz Christmas market from 13 November to 26 December 2026, New Year's Concert week, the Opera Ball on 4 February 2027, the Vienna City Marathon on 18 April 2027 and the IAEA General Conference in September. Delegations should look at corporate accounts.

What happens if my flight is delayed or diverted?

Give us the flight number and dispatch tracks the aircraft. A delay moves the pickup automatically and costs nothing, with the free hour beginning at the actual landing. A diversion is handled by dispatch, who re-brief the operator for the new airport. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
