What is a Zurich chauffeur service?

A Zurich chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed price, driven by a professional chauffeur for a limousine operator entered in the Canton of Zurich register kept by the Amt für Mobilität under the cantonal taxi and limousine law (PTLG). Driver, vehicle and keeper are registered before the first trip, the car carries the cantonal limousine plaque, and the chauffeur holds the federal code 121 permit for professional passenger transport. You cannot flag one down. Whether it is a Zurich Airport transfer, an hourly car service or a black car to Paradeplatz, the car, the chauffeur and the price are fixed before you travel.

Where that matters is the unplanned part of the day. App fares move when the Gubrist backs up or the first snow reaches the Limmat valley, and a cab from the rank runs on the meter. A reserved Zurich car service quote does not move. It already holds the 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, any car-train fare on an Alpine route and whatever the airport charges for the pickup on its forecourt.

The same booking reaches well past the city limits: ZRH to Zug for the offices around the lake, ZRH to Lucerne for the lake hotels, ZRH to Davos in January and ZRH to St Moritz for the ski season. For a straight comparison with the cab rank, see the Zurich taxi alternative page, and for teams arriving every week, corporate travel in Zurich adds one invoice and traveller profiles on the same fleet.

Flying into Zurich.

One hub airport handles almost everything, a few kilometres north of the city in Kloten. What changes is which forecourt you come out at, and whether you arrived on an airline or a private aircraft.

Times are door to door for a direct private car. Peak means roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 on a weekday. Basel's EuroAirport, which has separate Swiss and French sectors, is covered on the Basel page, and Bern's airport on the Bern page. For most travellers heading to Zurich, Zug or the Grisons, ZRH is the right airport by a wide margin.

Where you meet your chauffeur at ZRH.

Zurich is unusual in charging for every pass through its arrival forecourts, by the minute. That shapes how a professional pickup works here, and none of it should land on you.

The arrival forecourts.

Arrivals at Zurich Airport come out onto two arrival forecourts, Arrival 1 and Arrival 2 (Vorfahrt Ankunft). Every vehicle entering them pays: CHF 4 for up to 5 minutes, CHF 12 for up to 15, CHF 27 for up to 30 and CHF 57 for up to an hour, then CHF 1 for each further minute. A car that comes in more than twice within two hours pays an extra CHF 50 plus CHF 1 a minute. The rule exists to stop cars circling, and it works.

Limousine services can hold a forecourt permit, which costs CHF 180 a month and comes with access to the P12 waiting areas. Otherwise the airport itself suggests meeting in car park P1 for Arrival 1 and P2 for Arrival 2. Your chauffeur names the exact spot in the message sent before you land, and whichever charge applies is already inside the RYDES price. The run into the city is on ZRH to Paradeplatz.

  • Forecourt or car park, the free defaultWherever the chauffeur names before you land, either the forecourt or P1 or P2 next to your arrival hall. Any charge for it is in the quote.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onYour chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with your name, then walks you to the car. Useful after a long flight, or when the arrival is at Dock E and the Skymetro adds a step. The airport's own limousine desk is at Arrival 1.
  • Arrival 1 or Arrival 2Check the arrival hall on the airport's flight information on the day; your chauffeur sees the same data and adjusts.

Docks, the Skymetro and The Circle.

Gates are spread across docks. The Airside Center links Docks A and B, and the Skymetro shuttle runs out to Dock E in about three minutes, so an arrival at Dock E adds a train ride before passport control. Zurich handled 32.59 million passengers in 2025, an all-time record and 4 percent more than the year before, with 9.3 million of them changing planes rather than leaving the airport. A new Dock A, budgeted at over CHF 1 billion, is planned north of the current one with construction from 2027.

Beside the terminal stands The Circle, with a convention centre for up to 1,500 guests and the 550 rooms of the Hyatt Regency and Hyatt Place. For conference organisers this is the simplest venue in the country to move people in and out of, because the walk from arrivals is shorter than most hotel lobbies, and the corporate team can run shuttles between The Circle and the city on one account.

Private aviation.

Business aircraft use the general aviation area on the east side of the airport, reached by its own access road rather than the passenger forecourts, so the per-minute forecourt charges do not come into it. Jet Aviation runs the FBO at Zurich and has taken over the former ExecuJet facilities and hangars, which leaves one handling point for most private arrivals.

Give us the tail number or the handler's details with the booking and the chauffeur is cleared to wait at the FBO door. Late January is the exception to the easy rhythm. During the World Economic Forum, airspace restrictions around Davos affect helicopters and private aviation, and many delegations land at ZRH and drive on instead. WEF Davos transfers covers how that week works.

Airport facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Arrival halls, dock assignments and forecourt rules change, so treat the message from your chauffeur as the final word on where to walk.

What gets added to a fare here.

No congestion charge, no toll booths. In Zurich the extras are VAT, the motorway vignette, the occasional car train and the airport's forecourt clock.

Swiss motorways are paid for with an annual vignette, CHF 40 a year, rather than per trip. Alpine routes sometimes add a car train: the Vereina tunnel between Klosters and Sagliains costs CHF 36 in summer and CHF 39.50 to 41 in winter, and it is one of two ways to reach St Moritz in winter. Where a route uses either, it is already in your price. Snow chains are compulsory only where signed, which on the way to the Engadine can mean more than once.

Swiss VAT of 8.1 percent applies to passenger transport, and on a trip that crosses the border only the Swiss kilometres are taxed. The ZRH forecourt charge is the other fixed cost of an airport pickup. Under the Swiss price display ordinance, the price you see has to be the full amount payable with VAT and fixed surcharges inside it, which is how RYDES quotes anyway. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline.

App drivers in Zurich have their own legal history. The Zurich Social Insurance Court ruled in 2021 that Uber drivers are employees for social insurance purposes, and the Federal Supreme Court confirmed that in 2023; Bolt began operating in the city in 2024. RYDES operators sit in a different category, as registered limousine services under the cantonal PTLG. The full side-by-side is on Zurich taxi versus chauffeur.

Real drive times from ZRH.

The airport is close to the city, and the motorway ring north of it is where time goes. These are working ranges, and the top end shows up most weekday mornings.

ZRH to St Moritz3 h to 3 h 303 h 30 to 4 h 15214 km over the Julier, open year-round, or via the Vereina car train

The Gubrist tunnels on the A1 Nordumfahrung decide most westbound and southbound runs from the airport. A third tube opened in 2023, the renovation of tube 2 finished in November 2025, and tube 1 is still being renovated, with summer works between June and August 2026 and signal works running to the end of October 2026. Expect the upper end of each range until that work is done. In winter, add a margin for the Alpine runs on any day with fresh snow forecast.

Day trips and long runs.

Quoted as one fare from Zurich HB or your hotel to the door at the far end, so a closed pass or a slow Gubrist is the operator's cost, not a line on your bill.

Federal rules shape the long runs. Chauffeurs work under the Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2): no more than 9 hours at the wheel between daily rests, a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, and 11 hours of daily rest, all recorded by digital tachograph. A Zurich to St Moritz and back day, or a Milan return, is planned around those limits, sometimes with a break built in and sometimes with a second chauffeur. Vehicles registered abroad may not carry paying passengers between two Swiss points, so every domestic journey is driven by a Swiss-registered licensed operator. Zurich to Basel and Zurich to Bern are also quoted as fixed fares, though the train is often the better answer for one traveller.

When you should not book us.

Swiss trains are excellent, and from Zurich Airport they run straight into the city. For a fair share of trips the train is simply the better choice.

Arriving alone with a carry-on and staying near Zurich HB, take the train. Direct services run several times an hour, take 12 to 13 minutes, and a single costs roughly CHF 7, because the ZVV fare needs at least two zones and the city zone counts twice. Bern is 1 hour 18 minutes away on the direct IC1, against at least 1 hour 35 minutes by road. Staying several days and moving around the country, the Swiss Travel Pass at CHF 254 for three consecutive days in second class covers most of it.

A chauffeur is worth it in other situations: ski bags and suitcases you do not want on a platform, three or more people, small children, a dawn or late-night flight, a destination off the rail line such as a lakeside villa in Küsnacht, an office park in Zug or a chalet above Davos, a day of meetings with several stops, or WEF week, when the onward trip to Davos is the hard part. That covers why most people book, not every journey, and we would rather say so up front. The numbers side by side are on Zurich taxi versus chauffeur.

Zurich questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Zurich Airport?

At the arrival forecourt or the car park named in the message sent before you land. Zurich has two arrival halls, Arrival 1 and Arrival 2, and the airport recommends car park P1 for Arrival 1 and P2 for Arrival 2. Meet and greet inside the arrivals hall with a name board is a paid add-on. Details are on the Zurich Airport transfer page.

Does Zurich Airport charge for pickups?

Yes. Every pass through the arrival forecourts is charged: CHF 4 up to 5 minutes, CHF 12 up to 15, CHF 27 up to 30 and CHF 57 up to an hour, then CHF 1 a minute. More than two entries within two hours adds CHF 50 plus CHF 1 a minute. On a RYDES booking that charge, or the car park fee instead of it, is inside the quoted price.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport fees included?

Yes. The 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, any car-train fare on the route and the ZRH forecourt or car park charge for the pickup are all inside the price in Swiss francs. Paid parking at a stop where you ask the car to wait is the only thing outside it. See Zurich taxi versus chauffeur.

Do I need to tip my chauffeur in Zurich?

No. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. Under the Swiss price display ordinance the price shown has to be the total payable, and RYDES quotes that way.

Are your Zurich chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Since 1 January 2024 the Canton of Zurich law on taxis and limousines (PTLG) and its ordinance (PTLV) require limousine services to register the driver, each vehicle and the keeper with the Amt für Mobilität, Fachstelle Gewerbsmässige Personenbeförderung, before the first trip, and to display the cantonal limousine plaque in the windscreen. Every chauffeur also holds the federal code 121 permit for professional passenger transport.

How long does Zurich Airport to Paradeplatz take?

About 15 to 25 minutes off-peak and 30 to 45 minutes at weekday peak, over roughly 12 km. Zurich HB is 13 to 20 minutes off-peak. See ZRH to Paradeplatz.

Is the train from Zurich Airport faster?

Often, yes. Direct trains to Zurich HB take 12 to 13 minutes, run several times an hour, and a single costs roughly CHF 7. Travelling alone with light luggage to a hotel near the station, the train is the better choice. A chauffeur is worth it with heavy luggage, a group, children, an early or late flight, or a destination away from the station.

How long is the drive from ZRH to Zug and Lucerne?

Zug is about 49 km, 40 to 50 minutes off-peak and 55 to 75 minutes at peak. Lucerne is about 65 km, 55 to 65 minutes off-peak and 70 to 95 at peak. Both pass through the Gubrist tunnels, where renovation of tube 1 continues and signal works run to the end of October 2026. See ZRH to Zug and ZRH to Lucerne.

Can you drive me from Zurich to Davos for the WEF?

Yes. The WEF Annual Meeting runs from 18 to 22 January 2027, and Zurich is the main gateway. Davos is about 160 km from ZRH, usually 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 30 in normal conditions, longer in WEF week. Airspace restrictions around Davos affect helicopters and private aviation, so many delegates drive. Book as early as you can. See WEF Davos transfers and ZRH to Davos.

How do you get from Zurich to St Moritz?

By road over the Julier Pass, which is open all year, or through the Vereina car train between Klosters and Sagliains, whose fare is included when the route uses it. From ZRH it is about 214 km and usually 3 hours to 3 hours 30. See ZRH to St Moritz and St Moritz.

Can a chauffeur drive Zurich to St Moritz and back in one day?

Usually, with planning. Swiss chauffeurs work under the Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2): at most 9 hours of driving between daily rests and a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, recorded by digital tachograph. A return day to St Moritz or Milan is close to those limits once waiting is included, so dispatch builds in breaks or assigns a second chauffeur.

Can you take me from Zurich to Milan or Germany?

Sometimes. Milan centre is about 282 km via the Gotthard, roughly 3 hours 30 to 4 hours 30, and Konstanz on Lake Constance is about 71 km. Journeys that leave Switzerland are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. See Zurich to Milan.

Do you meet private jets at Zurich?

Yes. Private aircraft use the general aviation area on the east side of the airport, which has its own access road. Jet Aviation operates the FBO. Give us the tail number or handler and the chauffeur waits at the FBO door. See Zurich Airport transfers.

How much waiting time is included at Zurich Airport?

Sixty minutes free from the actual landing time, which covers the Skymetro from Dock E, passport control and baggage. Other pickups include 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments and you are told before it starts.

Can I hire a chauffeur by the hour in Zurich?

Yes. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum and runs in 30-minute increments. The chauffeur stays with the car between stops, which suits days that move between Paradeplatz, Zug and the lake. See hourly chauffeur hire in Zurich.

How far ahead should I book in Zurich?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and reservations open up to a year ahead. Book early for the WEF in January, Sechseläuten on 18 and 19 April 2027, the Street Parade on 14 August 2027, the Zurich Film Festival from 23 September to 3 October 2027 and the Christmas market weeks. Teams travelling often can use corporate accounts.

What happens if my flight to Zurich is delayed?

With the flight number on the booking, the pickup follows the aircraft automatically and the delay costs nothing, because free waiting starts at actual landing. If a flight diverts to another airport, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
