Timed backwards from the sailing.

You give us the departure time on your cruise documents. We work back through terminal check-in, port traffic and the day of the week to set a pickup that gets you there with room.

Sized for cruise luggage.

Ships have no weight limit, so people pack like it. A car booked for an airport run will not take two weeks of formalwear for four people, and we size for what you are actually carrying.

Cleared for the terminal.

Ports run secure perimeters with assigned gates and short drop-off windows. Your chauffeur has done that terminal before and knows which entrance the vehicle is permitted through.

What is a cruise transfer?

A cruise transfer is a private car booked in advance between a cruise terminal and an address, an airport or a hotel, at one price agreed before you travel. On embarkation the pickup time is calculated backwards from your ship's sailing time. On disembarkation it is set from the walk-off time your cruise line assigns you, not from when the ship docks.

The distinction matters because a ship is not a flight. It leaves at a published time and it does not wait, and passengers do not all come ashore at once. Both halves of a cruise are scheduled events with fixed windows, and the transfer has to be built around those windows rather than around a guess.

Two days that behave nothing alike.

Embarkation is a deadline. Disembarkation is a queue. They are priced and dispatched separately because almost nothing about them is the same.

To the ship

The risk is the clock. Miss the sailing and the ship goes without you, and it is not a rebooking, it is a cancelled holiday.

  1. Pickup is calculated backwards from the sailing time on your documents
  2. Terminal check-in closes well before departure, and we plan to that, not to the sailing
  3. Port road traffic on a turnaround morning is modelled into the journey time
  4. Fifteen minutes of waiting at your door is included
  5. Drop-off is at your assigned terminal, not a general port entrance

From the ship

The risk is the wave. Passengers come off in groups over three or four hours, and yours is decided by the ship, not by you.

  1. Pickup is set from your assigned disembarkation time, not the docking time
  2. Sixty minutes of free waiting from that assigned time
  3. Your chauffeur waits at the terminal pickup zone the port actually permits
  4. Luggage is collected from the hall and loaded there
  5. If your group is called early or late, tell dispatch and the car moves with it

A round trip is two separate transfers rather than one booking. On a fourteen-night cruise that is not a technicality: it means a change to your embarkation never touches the car waiting for you two weeks later.

When we will collect you.

The most common question on this page, and the one cruise lines answer least clearly. These are the working rules, adjusted for your specific port and day.

How RYDES sets your pickup time for cruise transfers. Actual times are calculated for your specific port, date and traffic conditions.

Home or hotel to the shipEmbarkation day Terminal arrival 2 to 3 hours before sailing 15 minutes Your booked pickup time
Airport to the shipFly-cruise, same day Terminal arrival 2 to 3 hours before sailing, flight tracked 60 minutes Actual landing time

Waiting beyond the free window is billed in 15-minute increments at your vehicle class rate, and dispatch contacts you before the first charge applies. On disembarkation the chauffeur does not leave without speaking to you.

What we do with your cruise documents.

Six things, none of which require anything from you beyond the booking reference and the sailing time.

1

The ship and the port are matched.

Give us the cruise line, the ship and the sailing date. Large ports run several terminals, and the ship decides which one your car is allowed to approach.

2

The time is worked backwards.

From the sailing time, through terminal check-in closing, through turnaround-morning port traffic, to a pickup time with genuine margin rather than an optimistic one.

3

The vehicle is sized for the bags.

Tell us how many cases and we assign for that. Cruise luggage defeats more transfers than traffic does, and it is the one thing that cannot be fixed at the kerb.

4

A chauffeur who knows that gate.

Port access is controlled and the permitted entrance is often not the obvious one. The operator assigns someone who has worked that terminal.

5

Details arrive the night before.

Name, photo, vehicle and direct number. On a 6am embarkation pickup, knowing who is coming matters more than usual.

6

Bags to the porters, and go.

At the terminal your chauffeur unloads to the luggage porters at the drop-off point. From there the ship has your cases and you have a boarding queue.

Fly in the day before.

We will happily sell you an airport-to-port transfer on sailing day, and we do it constantly. But the honest advice is to arrive the day before if your budget allows, because a delayed flight on embarkation morning does not cost you a transfer, it costs you the cruise.

If you are flying in on the day, give us the flight number. The transfer is then tracked exactly like an airport pickup, with sixty minutes of free waiting from actual landing, and dispatch watching the gap between your arrival and your sailing rather than leaving you to watch it.

Cruise luggage is not airline luggage.

No weight limit on a ship means people pack for two weeks, with formalwear, and often with a case each plus a shared one. This is where cruise transfers go wrong.

Vehicle sizing for cruise luggage. Large means a standard checked case up to 75cm. Assume one large case per person per week, plus a shared case.

If you are unsure, book one class larger. The difference in price is small; the difference between fitting and not fitting on a sailing morning is the whole holiday. Tell us the case count when you book and the operator will tell you honestly if the class you chose is wrong.

Optional paid add-ons for cruise transfers. Requested when you book, priced before you confirm, on the same single invoice.

Against the cruise line's own coach.

Most cruise lines sell a transfer alongside the booking. It is a reasonable product and sometimes the right one. Here is what you are actually choosing between.

Per person, the coach usually wins for one traveller. Per vehicle, a private transfer often costs less than two or three coach seats, and it is always the faster door-to-door option. Compare the total rather than the headline.

Choose by the boot.

On a cruise transfer the seat count is almost never the constraint. Work out the cases first and the class follows.

The day the ship is in port.

Eight hours ashore in a city you may never come back to, and a choice between a coach with forty strangers or working it out yourself. A car and chauffeur for the day is the third option, and in most ports it costs less than two excursion tickets.

Book it hourly. You set the route, the chauffeur knows the city, and the booking is planned to have you back at the terminal ninety minutes before all-aboard rather than cutting it fine. That margin is not padding, it is the entire reason to use a professional.

Worth mentioning when you book.

Cruise transfers have more moving parts than most. All of these are free to request and impossible to fix at the terminal gate.

Your case count

The single most useful thing you can tell us. Give the number of large and cabin cases rather than the number of people, and the vehicle is assigned to that.

Mobility aids

Wheelchairs, walkers and scooters need both boot volume and the right access. Tell us the type and folded dimensions and the operator will confirm a suitable vehicle before your travel date.

Your ship and terminal

Large ports run several terminals with different gates. Give us the cruise line and ship name and the correct terminal is set for you rather than guessed at the port entrance.

Groups sailing together

More than seven passengers, or several families meeting at the port, is a coordinated arrival rather than a booking. Our events team runs it as one programme with one invoice.

Child and booster seats

A paid add-on at {{FEE_CHILD_SEAT}} per seat, requested at booking and fitted before the car leaves. Price and available seat types depend on local law and the operator serving that port.

A stop on the way

Lunch before boarding, or a hotel to collect the rest of your party. Added at booking it is priced into the fixed fare; added on the day it is billed as waiting plus distance.

Back-to-back cruises

Staying aboard between sailings needs no transfer at all. If you are changing ships, tell us and it is booked as a port-to-port transfer with the turnaround timing built in.

Overnight before sailing

Many people fly in the night before and stay near the port. Hotel to terminal is a short, cheap transfer and worth booking rather than improvising on the morning.

Disembarkation is not a departure time.

The ship docks at six and people assume that is when they leave. It is not. Passengers come ashore in groups over three or four hours, called by luggage tag colour or deck, and your group is assigned by the ship rather than chosen by you.

Which is why we set your pickup from the walk-off time on your disembarkation letter rather than from the docking time, and hold the car for sixty minutes free from that point. If your group is called early or late, one message to dispatch moves the car. Booking a transfer for the docking time is the most common mistake on this whole page.

What is a cruise transfer?

A cruise transfer is a private car booked in advance between a cruise terminal and an address, an airport or a hotel, at one price agreed before you travel. On embarkation the pickup time is calculated backwards from the ship's sailing time. On disembarkation it is set from the walk-off time the cruise line assigns you rather than from when the ship docks.

What time will you collect me on sailing day?

Early enough to have you at the terminal 2 to 3 hours before your ship sails, which is what most cruise lines require for check-in. The exact pickup is calculated for your port, your date and the traffic that port sees on a turnaround morning. You give us the sailing time; we work backwards from it.

How long do you wait when I come off the ship?

60 minutes of free waiting from your assigned disembarkation time, not from when the ship docks. Beyond that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at your vehicle class rate and dispatch contacts you before the first charge. Your chauffeur does not leave without speaking to you.

Why is my pickup based on my walk-off time and not the docking time?

Because passengers do not all leave at once. Ships release people in groups over three or four hours, called by luggage tag colour or deck, and the ship assigns your group. Booking a car for the docking time is the most common mistake cruise passengers make and it usually means paying for waiting you did not need.

Should I fly in on the day my cruise sails?

If your budget allows, arrive the day before. A delayed flight on embarkation morning does not cost you a transfer, it costs you the cruise, because the ship sails at its published time and does not wait. If you are flying in on the day, give us the flight number so the transfer is tracked with 60 minutes of free waiting from actual landing.

Which vehicle do I need for cruise luggage?

Assume roughly one large case per person per week plus a shared case, then choose by the boot rather than the seats. Two people for one week fit a Business sedan. Two people for two weeks, or a family of four for one week, need an SUV. A family of four for two weeks needs a Van. If you are unsure, book one class larger.

Can you collect me from the airport and take me straight to the ship?

Yes, and it is one booking rather than two. Give us the flight number and the arrival half is tracked exactly like an airport transfer, with 60 minutes of free waiting from landing and meet and greet available as an add-on. Dispatch monitors the gap between your arrival and your sailing time throughout.

Do you know which terminal my ship uses?

Give us the cruise line, the ship name and the sailing date and the correct terminal is set on the booking. Large ports run several terminals with different access gates, and the permitted entrance for vehicles is often not the obvious one. Your chauffeur is assigned on the basis of having worked that terminal.

How far in advance should I book a cruise transfer?

As soon as you have your cruise documents, and at least 24 hours before travel. Turnaround days concentrate thousands of passengers into a few hours at one port, so larger vehicles in particular sell out well ahead. Cruise transfers are one of the few RYDES services where booking early genuinely changes what is available.

What if my cruise is delayed or the itinerary changes?

Tell dispatch and the transfer moves. Ports change berths, ships arrive late and itineraries get amended, and none of it is your fault. Transfers can also be cancelled free of charge up to 1 hour before pickup, so a cancelled sailing does not leave you paying for a car.

Can I hire a car for the day while my ship is in port?

Yes, and hourly hire is the right service for it. You set the route, the chauffeur knows the city, and the day is planned to have you back at the terminal 90 minutes before all-aboard. In most ports it costs less than two excursion tickets and you are not sharing a coach.

Do you take wheelchairs and mobility scooters?

In most markets, yes. Tell us the type and the folded dimensions when you book so the operator can confirm a suitable vehicle before your travel date. Mobility aids need both boot volume and the right access, so this is not something to leave until the day.

Is it cheaper than the cruise line's own transfer?

Often, once there are two or more of you. Cruise line coaches are priced per person while a private transfer is priced per vehicle, so two or three coach seats frequently cost more than the whole car. For a solo traveller on a relaxed schedule, the coach usually wins on price.

Will my chauffeur help with the luggage?

Yes. On embarkation they load at your door and unload to the port's luggage porters at the terminal drop-off point. On disembarkation they collect from the terminal hall and load. You are not moving cases yourself at either end.

Can we stop somewhere on the way to the port?

Yes. Added at booking, a stop is priced into the fixed fare in advance. Added on the day, it is billed as waiting plus distance. On embarkation morning we will tell you honestly whether the stop fits inside your timing, because the sailing time is not negotiable.

What if there are more than seven of us?

That becomes a coordinated arrival rather than a single booking. Our events team arranges multiple vehicles timed to arrive together at the same terminal, with one point of contact and one invoice, which is considerably less work than booking three cars and hoping they converge.
