What is a Bern chauffeur service?

A Bern chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed price in Swiss francs, carried out by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator working under the Canton of Bern's trade act (HGG) and taxi ordinance (TaxiV) and the municipal rules of the City of Bern, with every driver holding the federal code 121 permit for professional passenger transport. It is not hailed and it does not wait at a taxi stand. The car, the driver and the price are agreed before the day, whether that is a Zurich Airport to Bern transfer, an hourly car service in Bern or a black car to the Bundeshaus.

What it saves you is uncertainty. A metered fare from Zurich Airport to the capital keeps running through every slow kilometre around the Wankdorf interchange, and an app price can move with demand when parliament sits or the Zibelemärit fills the old town. A booked Bern car service does neither. The figure agreed at booking already contains the 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, any airport forecourt or parking charge for your pickup and, on the Zermatt run, the Lötschberg car-train fare.

The same reservation reaches well beyond the city. Bern Airport transfers from Belp, Geneva Airport to Bern for flights from the west, a Bern Expo transfer to the halls at Wankdorf, and long runs to Interlaken, Gstaad, Lausanne and Zurich. Federal offices, associations and companies moving people through the capital every month can add corporate travel in Bern for central billing and traveller reporting on the same fleet.

The airports Bern actually uses.

Bern has its own airport, but it is a small one. For most travellers the real gateway is Zurich, with Geneva and Basel as the alternatives depending on airline and direction.

Times are door to door from the pickup point in a direct private vehicle. Peak here means roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:30 to 18:30 on weekdays, when the A1 and A6 around Bern slow down hardest. Parliament weeks, large Bern Expo fairs and the Zibelemärit sit outside both columns.

Where your chauffeur meets you.

Three very different airports. Zurich is large and charges every car that enters its arrival forecourts, Geneva keeps pickups out of its drop-off lane, and Belp is small enough that the meeting point is a short walk from baggage.

Zurich Airport.

For Bern, Zurich Airport is the airport that matters most. It handles the long-haul and almost all the scheduled European flying that Bern itself no longer has. Zurich charges every pass a vehicle makes through its arrival forecourts, so your chauffeur collects from the forecourt or car park named in the message sent before you land, and whatever that costs is already inside a RYDES price.

The drive itself is 131 km on the A1, usually an hour and a half to two hours, with the slow part near Bern rather than near Zurich. Timings and price are on Zurich Airport to Bern. If you are one person with a suitcase, read the section on the train further down before you book anything.

  • Forecourt or car park, the free defaultYour chauffeur names the exact level and door in the pre-arrival message, and any forecourt or parking charge for your pickup is already paid.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with your name, useful after an overnight flight with bags and children.
  • Long-haul arrivalsFree waiting starts at actual landing, which leaves room for passport control and baggage on a busy morning.

Bern Airport, Belp.

Bern Airport sits in Belp, about 10 km south of the centre, and the drive to the Bundesplatz takes roughly a quarter of an hour. It lost its main scheduled carrier when SkyWork collapsed in 2018, and today most of its flights are seasonal holiday routes sold through tour operators, to places such as Palma, Olbia, Elba, Heraklion, Kos, Rhodes and Malta. Since September 2026 Vini has flown one scheduled route, Bern to Munich, on weekdays.

Business and general aviation are handled on site, which makes Belp the practical choice for private aircraft serving the capital. We have not verified a fixed pickup point here, so your chauffeur names the exact meeting place in the message sent before you land. From Belp it is also the shortest way into the mountains, see Bern Airport to Interlaken, and the shortest to the centre, see Bern Airport to the Bundesplatz.

Bern Airport · 900 × 600
Small terminal at Belp with the Gurten behind

Geneva Airport.

Geneva Airport is the other long-distance gateway, about 156 km and two hours or more from Bern along Lake Geneva and through Fribourg. Geneva does not allow pickups at its Kiss and Fly drop-off area, so your chauffeur meets you at the car park or point named in the pre-arrival message, with any parking cost inside the price.

Geneva makes sense for flights that suit it better than Zurich, and when the trip combines Bern with Lausanne or Gstaad, which lies closer to the Lake Geneva side. For Geneva itself, see chauffeur service in Geneva.

Airport rules above were checked in October 2026. Car parks and forecourt arrangements change with construction, so the message from your chauffeur before landing is the authority on where to walk.

VAT, the vignette and the car train.

Switzerland has no congestion charges and no motorway tolls by distance. What reaches a fare here is federal VAT, the annual motorway sticker, and on some Oberland and Valais routes a car-train ticket.

Every Swiss motorway needs the vignette, a CHF 40 annual sticker or e-vignette that covers the whole network. Every RYDES vehicle has one, and it is already counted in your price. Where a route crosses the Alps by car train, as the Zermatt run does through the Lötschberg between Kandersteg and Goppenstein, the ticket is bought at the loading station and is also inside the quote. Snow chains are compulsory only where signs require them, and that is the operator's planning job, not yours.

Swiss VAT is 8.1 percent and applies to passenger transport. On a cross-border trip only the Swiss kilometres are taxed. Swiss price rules say the price shown has to be the full amount payable, so a RYDES quote already includes VAT and every fixed charge. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. The single thing outside the quote is paid parking when you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges.

How charges reach the passenger in Bern, by way of travelling. Taxi fares follow each operator's published tariff.

What the route costs in time matters as much as what it costs in money. A chauffeur heading from Zurich to the Bundesplatz at 17:00 may leave the A1 early and cross the city rather than sit through Wankdorf; one heading to Interlaken avoids the city altogether. Neither changes your price. More on Bern taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Bern is compact, but the motorways around it are not quiet. The Wankdorf interchange in the north-east of the city is where most delays start, and it sits on the way to both Zurich Airport and Bern Expo.

Typical door-to-door driving times on common Bern routes, for a direct private vehicle.
RouteOff-peakWeekday peakWhat moves it
Bern Airport to the Bundesplatz and old town16 to 20 min20 to 30 min9 km via Belp and the A6, the city end slower than the motorway
Bern Airport to Bern Expo, Wankdorf21 to 25 min25 to 40 min18 km round the south and east of the city into the Wankdorf junction
Bern centre to Bern Expo11 to 15 min15 to 25 min7 km, slowest on the opening morning of a large fair
Bern Airport to Thun24 to 30 min30 to 40 min24 km on the A6 south, an easy run outside the commute
Bern Airport to Interlaken48 to 55 min55 to 70 min52 km along Lake Thun; summer weekends and ski Saturdays run long
Bern to Zurich Airport1 h 35 to 1 h 501 h 50 to 2 h 15131 km on the A1, Wankdorf and Schönbühl the usual bottlenecks
Bern to Geneva Airport2 h to 2 h 152 h 20 to 2 h 45156 km on the A12 and A1 via Fribourg and Lausanne
Bern to EuroAirport Basel1 h 25 to 1 h 401 h 40 to 2 h107 km, the A1 then the A2 north
Bern to Lucerne1 h 25 to 1 h 401 h 40 to 2 h 05114 km, usually via the A1 and the A2

These ranges will not shrink soon. According to TCS Bern in April 2026, the expansion of the overloaded Wankdorf interchange has federal approval but is held up by an appeal from the city, and the widening of the A1 between Wankdorf and Schönbühl was part of the motorway package voters rejected in November 2024. For a flight from Zurich you cannot miss, leave enough margin for the top of the peak column.

Into the mountains and beyond.

Bern is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. Interlaken is under an hour away, Gstaad not much more, and with the Lötschberg car train even Zermatt becomes a single journey priced as one fare.

The car train is the weak point of the Zermatt route. An avalanche suspended the Lötschberg service in February 2026, and when it stops the alternative is a much longer road route, which dispatch will price and plan with you. Wengen and Mürren are car-free too, so cars stop at Lauterbrunnen and the last part is by rail or cable car. For the resort itself, see chauffeur service in Zermatt. Cross-border runs, for example to Milan or Munich, are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically.

Where we pick up.

The federal city, the suburbs that hold its ministries and fair grounds, the airport side of Belp, and the Oberland as far as Gstaad. Every domestic journey is driven by a Swiss-registered licensed operator.

When you should not book us.

Switzerland runs some of the best trains in the world, and Bern sits in the middle of the network. For a lot of trips the train is simply the better answer, and we would rather say so.

Landing at Zurich Airport alone with one suitcase and heading for a hotel near Bern station, take the direct IC1. It runs from the airport station to Bern in 1 hour 18 minutes, quicker than the car at almost any hour. From Bern Airport, the AirportBus (BERNMOBIL line 160) runs to Belp station, where the S-Bahn continues into the city, and guests staying overnight in Bern get a Bern Ticket that covers it. If you are touring for a few days, a Swiss Travel Pass for 3 consecutive days costs CHF 254 in second class.

A chauffeur makes sense when the train does not: several people sharing the cost, ski bags and cases, small children, an arrival after the last good connection, a door the railway does not reach such as a ministry in Ittigen or a chalet above Gstaad, a day with several stops, or a schedule with no room for changing trains. The detailed time and cost comparison is on Bern taxi alternative.

Which airport should I fly into for Bern?

For most travellers, Zurich. Bern Airport in Belp is only about 10 km from the centre but now has mostly seasonal holiday flights and one scheduled route, Vini's weekday Bern to Munich service. Zurich Airport is about 131 km away, usually 1 hour 35 to 2 hours 15 by road, and Geneva about 156 km. See Zurich Airport to Bern and Bern Airport transfers.

How long is the drive from Zurich Airport to Bern?

Usually 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 50 off-peak and 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 15 at weekday peak, over about 131 km on the A1. The slowest part is near Bern, around the Wankdorf interchange. The fixed price and timings are on Zurich Airport to Bern.

Is the train from Zurich Airport to Bern faster?

Often, yes. The direct IC1 from the airport station reaches Bern in 1 hour 18 minutes, and for one person with a suitcase going near Bern station it is usually the best choice. A chauffeur is the better answer for groups, heavy luggage, small children, late arrivals and addresses away from the station.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Zurich Airport?

At the forecourt or car park named in the message your chauffeur sends before you land. Zurich charges every pass through its arrival forecourts, and that charge is already in your price. Meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is a paid add-on. See Zurich Airport to Bern.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Bern Airport?

Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land. Bern Airport in Belp is a small terminal and the drive to the Bundesplatz takes about 16 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. See Bern Airport transfers.

Can you pick me up at Geneva Airport?

Yes. Geneva is about 156 km from Bern, usually 2 hours to 2 hours 45 by road. Geneva does not allow pickups at its Kiss and Fly area, so your chauffeur meets you at the car park or point given in the pre-arrival message, with any parking charge inside the price. See Geneva Airport to Bern.

Who licenses chauffeurs in Bern?

Today taxi and limousine services in the canton fall under the Canton of Bern's trade act (HGG) and taxi ordinance (TaxiV), with detailed municipal rules in Bern, Biel, Thun, Interlaken and Langenthal. A new cantonal law on taxi and limousine services is in the legislative process; it has not been passed. On top of that, every driver holds the federal code 121 permit and works under the ARV 2 driving-time rules. See Bern car service.

What is code 121 and why does it matter to me?

Code 121 on a Swiss driving licence is the federal permit for carrying passengers professionally in a car. It requires extra theory and practical tests and regular medical checks. Driving and rest times are governed by the ARV 2 ordinance: at most 9 hours' driving between daily rests, a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, and 11 hours' daily rest, recorded by digital tachograph. On a long Alpine day, dispatch plans the break or a second driver.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport charges included?

Yes. The 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the CHF 40 motorway vignette, any airport forecourt or parking charge for your pickup and, where used, the Lötschberg car-train fare are all inside the price quoted in Swiss francs. Service is included as well; anything extra is voluntary and offered once at payment. Paid parking at a stop where you ask the car to wait is the only extra. See Bern taxi alternative.

Can you drive me from Bern to Interlaken or Grindelwald?

Yes. Interlaken is about 58 km from Bern, typically 50 minutes to 1 hour 10, and Grindelwald about 74 km, typically 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 25. Both are priced as one fixed fare to your hotel. Wengen and Mürren are car-free, so the drive ends at Lauterbrunnen. See Bern to Interlaken and Bern to Grindelwald.

Can you take me to Gstaad?

Yes. Gstaad is about 86 km from Bern through the Simmental, usually 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 45. Book an SUV in winter. See Bern to Gstaad and Gstaad transfers.

How do I get from Bern to Zermatt by car?

Via the Lötschberg car train. The car drives about 63 km to Kandersteg, rides the train about 15 minutes to Goppenstein, then drives about 51 km to Täsch, where you take the shuttle train into car-free Zermatt. Door to door to the Täsch handover takes about 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 15, and the car-train fare is inside the price. See Bern to Zermatt.

Do you serve Bern Expo?

Yes. Bern Expo at Wankdorf is about 7 km from the centre, 11 to 25 minutes depending on traffic, and about 18 km from Bern Airport. The Wankdorf interchange is the slowest point in the city, so plan extra time on the opening day of a large fair. See Bern Expo transfers.

Do you handle embassy and government transport?

Yes. We pick up across the Altstadt, the Bundesplatz and the Kirchenfeld embassy district, and serve federal offices in Ittigen, Ostermundigen and Wankdorf. Visiting delegations can book by the hour with the car waiting between appointments, with First or Van class for official parties. See embassy and government transport in Bern.

When is Bern especially busy?

During the federal parliament sessions (winter 30 November to 18 December 2026, spring 1 to 19 March 2027, summer 31 May to 18 June 2027), on Zibelemärit day, Monday 23 November 2026, when the old town is packed from early morning, at the Christmas markets until 23 December, at the Lauberhorn races in Wengen from 15 to 17 January 2027, and at the Gurtenfestival from 14 to 18 July 2027. Book early for those dates. RYDES takes reservations up to a year ahead and needs at least 3 hours' notice. See hourly chauffeur in Bern.

Can a foreign-registered car drive me within Switzerland?

No. Vehicles registered abroad may not carry paying passengers between two points in Switzerland, under Art. 115 VZV and the customs rules. Every domestic RYDES journey from Bern is carried out by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator. Trips that cross into France, Italy or Germany are confirmed by dispatch at booking.

What happens if my flight is late or cancelled?

Give us the flight number and we track the aircraft. A delay moves the pickup automatically at no cost, and the 60 free minutes start at the actual landing time. If your flight is diverted or cancelled, dispatch re-books the chauffeur for the new airport or time. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before pickup; inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full.
