Three journeys most visitors book.

Nearly every Reykjavík booking is one of three things: the airport run, the lagoon, or a full day out on the Golden Circle. The rest is variations on those.

Keflavík airport transfers.

The Keflavík to Reykjavík run is 46 km across the Reykjanes peninsula. Your flight is tracked from take-off, and the first 60 minutes after the wheels touch down cost nothing. Harpa and Sky Lagoon are priced the same way, as one fare to one address.

Blue Lagoon on the way.

The lagoon sits 20 km from the terminal, so a KEF to Blue Lagoon transfer, a soak, and then the drive on into town is the most common arrival day we see. Luggage stays locked in the car. The return leg is on Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík.

What is a Reykjavík chauffeur service?

A Reykjavík chauffeur service is private ground transport booked ahead at a price fixed before the trip starts, driven by a chauffeur holding a driver permit from Samgöngustofa, the Icelandic Transport Authority, and run by an operator licensed under Iceland's Act 120/2022 on taxi services. You do not flag it down and it is not sent by an app on demand. The car class, the pickup and the fare are settled before you land, whether the booking is a Keflavík airport transfer, an hourly car service around the capital, or a black car to a dinner at Harpa.

Price certainty is the point. A taxi from the KEF airport rank to Reykjavík usually runs on the meter and lands somewhere around ISK 20,000 to 25,000 depending on where you are staying. A reserved Reykjavík car service replaces the meter with one agreed figure, which Iceland's taxi law allows when the operator can prove the price was settled beforehand. RYDES quotes in euros; your card is charged in euros. Any VAT due and the airport's own kerb and pickup charges are already inside that number.

The same booking reaches well beyond the city. Blue Lagoon transfers on arrival day, Golden Circle private tours by the hour, south coast day trips to Seljalandsfoss and Vík, cruise port transfers from Skarfabakki, and a taxi alternative for evenings across Kópavogur, Garðabær and Hafnarfjörður. For weddings in town or out in the country, see wedding transportation, and for every point-to-point fare, the airport routes and day-trip routes listed below.

Iceland's two airports.

Almost every visitor arrives at Keflavík, out on the Reykjanes peninsula. The small domestic airport sits inside the city itself and matters only if your trip continues on a domestic flight.

KEF handled 8.1 million passengers in 2025, 2 percent fewer than the year before, and 2.2 million of them were transfer passengers. The 2026 forecast is over 7.5 million.

Meeting your chauffeur.

Keflavík is a single terminal, but its forecourt charges by the minute and the meeting arrangements for pre-booked cars are not published as one fixed spot. Your chauffeur's message is the reference.

Keflavík International.

There is one arrivals hall at Keflavík, with customs and baggage before it. The airport does not publish a single named meeting point for pre-booked cars, so your chauffeur sends the exact place in a message before you land, along with their name, the vehicle and its plate. Standard pickup is free. Being met inside the hall with your name on a board is a paid add-on, and a good choice after an overnight flight from North America.

The forecourt is run to keep cars moving. In the drop-off lane the first 5 minutes are free and then it costs ISK 500 a minute, plus a service fee. The P1 car park gives the first 15 minutes free, and P2, the pick-up car park, gives 30 minutes free and then ISK 690 for the first hour. Whatever your chauffeur pays there is counted in the fare, so the wait for a slow bag is not your problem. Timing into town is on KEF to Reykjavík.

Reykjavík domestic airport.

Domestic flights leave from the city airport, not from Keflavík, and the two are 48 km apart by road. A connection between them is a transfer in its own right, about 47 minutes with clear roads, longer in a storm. If you fly in from abroad and continue north the same day, leave far more time than the distance suggests, because your bag comes off one plane at KEF and has to check in again across town.

The domestic terminal is small and the drive to downtown hotels is short. For an early domestic departure, a pre-booked car means you are not depending on a taxi turning up in the dark.

Small terminal at the edge of the city

Skarfabakki cruise port.

Most large ships berth at Skarfabakki, about 4 km from the centre and roughly 9 minutes in free-flowing traffic. Your chauffeur waits at the quay pickup area named in the message, which matters on mornings when several ships turn around and hundreds of passengers want the same kerb.

Since 1 January 2025, cruise passengers in Iceland pay an infrastructure fee of ISK 2,500 per person per day, which has been reported to cut cruise bookings. It is a levy on the cruise, not on your transfer. The harbour authority, Faxaflóahafnir, scheduled a new 5,500 m² terminal for spring 2026; its opening has not been confirmed, so follow the chauffeur's instructions rather than any building name.

Airport and harbour details above were checked against public sources on 16 October 2026. Parking tariffs at KEF change, and the meeting point for your car is whatever your chauffeur tells you on the day.

What a Keflavík ride really costs.

No congestion zone shapes the price here. What changes the cost of reaching Reykjavík is how many of you there are, whether you want to stop at the lagoon, and how long you are prepared to wait for a bus.

Flybus meets every arriving flight and leaves 35 to 45 minutes after it lands, then takes about 45 minutes to the city. A ticket is about ISK 3,999, with about ISK 500 more for a drop-off at your hotel. Airport Direct runs a similar service for about ISK 3,500 to 4,500. A metered taxi to the centre comes to about ISK 20,000 to 25,000. Uber does not operate in Iceland; the Hopp app books licensed taxis in Reykjavík and at KEF.

Iceland has no separate limousine licence. A car carrying paying passengers is a taxi in law, whether it looks like one or not, and Act 120/2022 on taxi services (in force since 1 April 2023, amended in 2026) requires a driver permit and an operating licence from Samgöngustofa. Operators still dispatch through a licensed taxi station. A trip may run without a meter when the price was agreed before departure and the operator can prove it, which is how a RYDES fare works. Day tours are a separate category: licensed tourist transport sits under Act 28/2017, and a small car running sightseeing days also needs a day-tour or travel-agency licence.

None of these is wrong for everyone. For one or two people with time and light bags, the bus is good value, and we say so below. The comparison tips once there are four of you, once a lagoon stop is involved, or once the flight lands near midnight. The full side-by-side is on Reykjavík taxi versus chauffeur.

Drive times, and what weather does to them.

Reykjavík traffic is light by European standards. Wind, drifting snow and ice are what stretch a journey here, so the right-hand column is a winter column rather than a rush-hour one.

In winter, conditions change quickly and a road can close for hours in a storm. Your chauffeur checks the Road Administration's notices at umferdin.is before setting off (road.is now sends you there, and the phone line is 1777) and may suggest leaving earlier. Highland F-roads are not part of chauffeur routes in winter. For a flight you cannot miss between November and March, add at least half the off-peak time as a buffer.

Day trips out of Reykjavík.

Iceland's famous sights are a long way from the capital by city standards, and the light is short half the year. A day trip is usually booked by the hour so the car waits at each stop; a one-way drop can be priced as a single fixed fare.

Daylight sets the shape of winter day trips. On 21 December the sun rises at about 11:22 and sets at about 15:29, a little over four hours of light, so a Golden Circle day in December sees much of its driving in the dark and a south coast trip to Vík more so. Hourly bookings run to the itinerary you give, and the chauffeur may adjust the order of stops for weather or road notices on the day.

What sits inside a Reykjavík fare.

One figure in euros, agreed before you fly. Nothing is added by a meter and nothing turns up on your card later.

Airport charges and any VAT
The KEF forecourt and pick-up parking charges your chauffeur incurs, any tolls, and any VAT due are counted in the quoted price.
Price agreed in advance
Iceland's taxi law lets a pre-agreed trip run without a meter when the price can be proven. Your booking confirmation is that proof.
Tipping is up to you
The chauffeur accepted the job at an agreed rate, so a tip is a choice, not an expectation. You can add one at payment or leave it.
Your flight, tracked
Give the flight number when you book. A delay, or an early arrival on a tailwind, moves the pickup without any charge.
An hour at the airport
Waiting is free for 60 minutes from when the aircraft actually lands, and for 15 minutes at a hotel or any other address. After that it is billed in 15-minute steps, and you are told first.
Standard pickup
Collection at the meeting point your chauffeur names costs nothing. A greeting inside arrivals with a name board is the paid option.
Free changes to 24 hours
Cancel or change up to 24 hours before pickup at no cost. Inside 24 hours the fare is charged in full, because a car is already set aside for you.
A licensed Icelandic operator
Each car is run by an operator holding a Samgöngustofa licence and dispatching through a licensed station. Licences and insurance are checked before the operator takes work.
Child seats and pets
Child seats are a paid add-on, supplied and then fitted by the parent. Pets are a paid add-on too; service animals ride free.
What is not included
Paid parking where you ask the car to wait, such as at a sight or a restaurant that charges for it, and the entry tickets to the lagoons.

When you should not book us.

Keflavík has no railway, but its airport buses are well run, and for a lot of visitors they are the right answer.

One or two of you, a case each, no hurry and a hotel near a drop-off point: take Flybus. It meets every arriving flight, leaves 35 to 45 minutes after landing, takes about 45 minutes to the city and costs about ISK 3,999, with about ISK 500 more for a drop at your hotel. Airport Direct does much the same for about ISK 3,500 to 4,500. If you would rather have a car but not a booking, the Hopp app books licensed taxis at KEF and in town; Uber does not operate in Iceland.

A chauffeur is the better buy for families with children and car seats, for groups of four or more where one fare beats a row of tickets, for anyone who wants the Blue Lagoon on the way in without hauling luggage onto a second bus, and for a flight that lands late at night in January. It also wins for a Golden Circle or south coast day at your own pace. The full cost comparison is on Reykjavík taxi versus chauffeur.

Reykjavik questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How far is Keflavík airport from Reykjavík?

About 46 km by road to Hallgrímskirkja and Laugavegur, and 48 km to Harpa. The drive usually takes 45 to 55 minutes, and 55 to 80 minutes when snow or strong wind slows the road across the peninsula. The airport is near Keflavík and Reykjanesbær, not in the capital. See KEF to Reykjavík.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Keflavík?

The airport does not publish a single meeting point for pre-booked cars, so your chauffeur sends the exact spot in a message before you land, with their name and the car's plate. Standard pickup is free. Being met inside arrivals with a name board is a paid add-on. Details are on Keflavík airport transfers.

Is Flybus cheaper than a chauffeur?

For one or two people, yes. Flybus costs about ISK 3,999 a seat, plus about ISK 500 for a hotel drop-off, and leaves 35 to 45 minutes after each flight lands, then takes about 45 minutes to town. A chauffeur becomes the better value for families and groups, for a Blue Lagoon stop on the way, or for a late arrival when you would rather not wait for the coach.

How much is a taxi from Keflavík to Reykjavík?

About ISK 20,000 to 25,000 on the meter, depending on the address and the conditions. A RYDES fare is agreed before you fly and charged in euros, with the airport charges and any VAT inside it, so the number does not move if the road is slow. The comparison is on Reykjavík taxi versus chauffeur.

Can I stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way from the airport?

Yes, and it is the booking we see most. The lagoon is about 20 km from KEF, 20 to 25 minutes, and your luggage stays in the locked car while you are in the water. Book your lagoon entry separately, then book KEF to Blue Lagoon and the onward Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík leg, or one hourly booking that covers both. See Blue Lagoon transfers.

Is the Blue Lagoon open, given the eruptions?

The Sundhnúkur crater row near Grindavík erupted repeatedly between 2023 and 2025, most recently from 16 July to 5 August 2025, the twelfth eruption on the peninsula since 2021. The Blue Lagoon closed during eruptions, and its access road is road 43. There was no closure notice on 16 October 2026. Your chauffeur checks the official road notices at umferdin.is and the Blue Lagoon's own notices on the day, and tells you before you set off if anything has changed.

Can you drive us around the Golden Circle?

Yes. The loop from Reykjavík to Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss and back through Hveragerði is about 254 km and roughly four hours of driving before any stop, so it fills most of a day. It is best booked by the hour, with the car waiting at each site. See Golden Circle private tours.

How long is a day trip to Vík and the south coast?

Vík is about 186 km from Reykjavík, around 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes each way in good conditions, with Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss on the way. With stops it is a long day, and longer still in winter. See Reykjavík to Vík and south coast day trips.

Is it safe to travel by road in an Icelandic winter?

Conditions change fast, and a road can close for hours in a storm. Your chauffeur checks the Road Administration's notices at umferdin.is, or by phone on 1777, before every winter trip, and may suggest leaving earlier or changing the order of stops. Highland F-roads are not part of chauffeur routes in winter. An SUV is the sensible class between November and March.

How much daylight is there in December?

Very little. On 21 December the sun rises at about 11:22 and sets at about 15:29, roughly four hours of daylight. A winter Golden Circle or south coast day is still worth doing, but plan for much of the driving in the dark and choose your stops in daylight.

Are your Reykjavík chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Iceland has no separate limousine licence, so a chauffeur car is licensed as a taxi under Act 120/2022 on taxi services: the driver holds a permit and the operator an operating licence from Samgöngustofa, the Icelandic Transport Authority, and trips are dispatched through a licensed station. Day-tour work also falls under Act 28/2017 on tourist transport. Licences and insurance are checked before an operator takes bookings.

What currency do you charge in, and is VAT included?

RYDES quotes in euros; your card is charged in euros. Bus and taxi prices on this page are shown in Icelandic krónur because that is how those providers sell them. Any VAT due, the airport charges and any tolls are inside the price. Paid parking where you ask the car to wait, and lagoon tickets, are not.

Does Uber work in Reykjavík?

No. Uber does not operate in Iceland. The Hopp app books licensed taxis in Reykjavík and at Keflavík airport, and taxis also wait at the KEF rank. A pre-booked chauffeur is the option when you want the price, the car and the meeting point fixed before you fly.

Do you collect from the Skarfabakki cruise port?

Yes. Skarfabakki is about 4 km from the centre, around 8 to 15 minutes, and 48 km from Keflavík airport. Your chauffeur waits at the quay pickup area named in the message. Since 1 January 2025 cruise passengers pay an infrastructure fee of ISK 2,500 per person per day, which is part of the cruise, not the transfer. See Reykjavík cruise port transfers.

Can I book a car by the hour in Reykjavík?

Yes, with a two-hour minimum, extended in 30-minute steps. The car waits between stops, which suits Golden Circle days, a Sky Lagoon evening with dinner after, or a wedding day. Paid parking at a stop is the one cost outside the quote. See hourly chauffeur in Reykjavík and wedding transportation.

How far ahead should I book, and what about festival dates?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and you can reserve up to a year ahead. Book early for Iceland Airwaves on 5 to 7 November 2026, Secret Solstice on 23 to 25 July 2027 and the Reykjavík Marathon on 21 August 2027. Reykjavík Pride ran 4 to 9 August 2026; the 2027 dates are not yet confirmed. Groups should look at group transportation.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Add the flight number and we track it. The pickup moves with the aircraft at no charge, and the 60 free minutes start from the actual landing time. Iceland is on GMT all year with no daylight saving, so check your arrival time against GMT if you are flying in from Europe after the late-October clock change there.
