Bergen, and the country behind it.

Most people who land here are not staying in the city for long. The work is getting them from the airport or the ship to the water, the orchards and the mountain railway.

What is a Bergen chauffeur service?

A Bergen chauffeur service is private transport booked ahead at a price agreed before departure, carried out by an operator holding a Norwegian taxi licence (drosjeløyve) from Vestland County Council under the Yrkestransportlova, the national commercial transport act. Norway has no separate limousine category, so a chauffeur car carrying paying passengers is a licensed taxi that you reserve rather than flag down. The car class, the chauffeur and the total are fixed in advance, whether it is a Flesland airport transfer, an hourly car service in the centre, a black car for a client or a long Bergen to Flåm run.

Bergen's distances are what make a fixed price matter. A metered ride to Flesland is a known quantity, and Bergen Taxi now publishes a fixed rate for it. A fare to Flåm, three hours away with mountain roads and a ferry option, is a much bigger number to leave open, and an app has nothing to offer when you need a van with six suitcases at a cruise berth. A reserved Bergen car service settles that before the day: toll ring passages, any ferry crossing and the 12 percent Norwegian VAT on passenger transport are part of the quote. RYDES quotes in euros; your card is charged in euros.

The same booking reaches well beyond the city. Cruise transfers from Skolten and Jekteviken, airport runs to Norheimsund and Voss, long transfers to Stavanger, and a full day in Hardanger with the car kept between stops. When a metered cab is the cheaper answer, the taxi alternative page says so plainly, and companies moving people through the city every month can put it all on one account with corporate travel in Bergen.

One airport, and where it leads.

Bergen is served by a single airport at Flesland, on the south-west side of the city. What changes is how far you are going once you leave it, and for many visitors that is a long way.

These ranges are built from free-flow road data and widened for real conditions. Avinor puts the airport-to-centre taxi ride at about 16 km and 18 minutes; the range above allows for pickup, the harbour streets and the time it takes to reach the door. The peak column means the weekday toll-ring rush hours for the city runs, and snow, ice or reduced visibility for the mountain runs, which between November and March can be slower again.

Where the car is waiting.

Flesland is one terminal and easy to read. The cruise quays and the old centre are where pickups need a little more care, because the streets were laid out for boats and handcarts long before cars.

Bergen Flesland.

Flesland handled about 6.70 million passengers in 2025, around 2 percent more than the year before, and everything happens in one terminal building. The taxi rank is just outside the terminal doors. For a pre-booked car, your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message that reaches you before you land, together with the vehicle, the plate and a phone number that works on the day.

Bybanen, the light rail, leaves from the terminal's lower floor, and the Flybussen airport coach also serves the terminal. Leaving the airport, the car passes a toll point on Flyplassvegen, the airport road, which is part of the Bergen toll ring; on a RYDES booking it is already counted. Timings to the old town are on Flesland to Bryggen.

The cruise quays.

Bergen is Norway's most-visited cruise port, with more than 680,000 cruise passengers in 2025, and ships tie up close to the centre at two main berths, Skolten and Jekteviken. A cruise terminal transfer is collected as near to the gangway as the port lets cars go; your chauffeur tells you which side of the berth to walk to.

The city council has set daily limits on how many ships and passengers it takes, so even the busiest days have a ceiling, but a full day still puts thousands of people and dozens of coaches on the harbour road within the same hour. Disembarkation mornings are the moment to book a larger class with room for every case, and to leave a margin before a flight.

Cruise berth · 900 × 600
Ship at Skolten with the harbour road in front

Bryggen and the centre.

Most hotel pickups sit within a short walk of Bryggen, Torget and Festplassen, where traffic is slowed by buses, deliveries and visitors on foot. Your chauffeur picks the nearest point a car can legally stop and messages it to you, which is sometimes a few steps from the front door rather than at it.

Nordnes and the areas around Fløyen and Ulriken are covered in the same way. For a day with several stops in the centre, an hourly booking keeps the car nearby instead of sending it back across the toll ring each time.

Bryggen · 900 × 600

Airport and port arrangements above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Cruise berth allocation changes from ship to ship and season to season, so treat the message from your chauffeur as the final word on where to walk.

Toll ring, ferries and VAT.

Bergen charges cars to enter and cross the city, the fjord routes sometimes need a ferry, and passenger transport carries its own VAT rate. Here is how each of those reaches you.

The Bergen toll ring, run as Bypakke Bergen, charges light vehicles at every toll point they pass, with higher rates on weekdays between 06:30 and 09:00 and between 14:30 and 16:30. In 2026 a petrol or hybrid car pays NOK 25.60 per passage with an AutoPASS tag, NOK 51.20 in the rush, or NOK 32 and NOK 64 without one. A diesel car with a tag agreement pays NOK 30.40, or NOK 56 in the rush, and electric cars pay NOK 17.60 and NOK 35.20 since 25 March 2026. The airport road has its own toll point. On a RYDES booking every passage is inside the price, whichever rate applies.

Some routes out of the city cross water. The drive to Stavanger includes two ferries and so does the run to Ålesund, and a route through Hardanger can use one too. When a ferry is part of the planned route, the crossing fare for the car and its passengers is in the quote; the time spent waiting at the quay is not something the free-flow figures can predict, so the table below adds it as a separate caveat. Norwegian VAT, mva, on passenger transport is 12 percent and is part of the total as well. Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges, is the one cost that stays outside.

Toll rates change by fuel type and time of day, and the operator chooses the vehicle, so the exact toll on your trip is not something you need to work out. The figure you were quoted already absorbs it. The side-by-side cost comparison with a Bergen cab is on Bergen taxi versus chauffeur.

How long the roads take.

Inside the city the variable is the rush hour around the toll ring. Outside it, the variable is the weather on the mountain roads. These ranges allow for both.

Typical door-to-door driving times from Bergen Flesland and the city, for a direct private vehicle. Ferry waiting time is not included.

Flesland to Flåm3 h to 3 h 303 h 45 to 4 h 30Beyond Voss towards the Aurlandsfjord, slowest from November to March

Free-flow road data gives Flesland to Bryggen as about 32 minutes; Avinor's own taxi estimate is closer to 18 minutes, which is why the off-peak column spans both. The mountain columns assume a dry road. Winter snow and ice slow the high ground further, and dispatch will tell you before the day if a planned route looks doubtful.

Out along the fjords.

Long transfers are priced as one fixed fare for the whole journey, with any ferry included, so a slow crossing or a closed mountain pass is the operator's problem rather than an extra on your card.

What a Bergen fare covers.

One euro figure, agreed before the car moves, with nothing added once you step out.

Toll ring and ferries
Every Bypakke Bergen passage on the route, including the airport road, and the ferry fare on any planned crossing are inside the quote.
Norwegian VAT
The 12 percent mva on passenger transport is part of the total, which is charged to your card in euros.
Tips are your call
The chauffeur accepted the trip at a pay rate already agreed, so a tip is genuinely extra. You can add one when you pay, or leave it.
A tracked flight
Give the flight number at booking and the pickup follows the aircraft, early or late, without you calling anyone.
An hour at Flesland
Sixty minutes free from the moment you land, enough for bags and passport control. Other pickups, including cruise berths, include fifteen minutes.
A standard pickup
Collection at the point your chauffeur names costs nothing. Being met inside arrivals with a name board is the paid upgrade.
Cancel with a day's notice
Free changes and cancellations until 24 hours before pickup. Closer than that, the full fare is charged, since a car and driver are already held for you.
A licensed Norwegian operator
Every car runs under a county taxi licence and through a licensed dispatch centre, with insurance checked before the operator can accept work.
Child seats and pets
Child seats come as a paid extra, supplied by the operator and fitted by a parent. Pets travel for a fee, and service animals are always free.
Outside the price
Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait at a place that charges for it. Nothing else is billed separately.

When you should not book us.

Bergen has two good ways in from the airport and one of the most famous train journeys in Europe on its doorstep. For some trips, they are the better choice and we would rather say so.

On your own with time to spare, take Bybanen. Line 1 leaves from the lower floor of the terminal and reaches the centre in about 45 minutes for NOK 51, and up to four children travel free with an adult. In a hurry, Flybussen does the trip in about 20 to 30 minutes for NOK 189 booked online, NOK 220 on board, with stops including Festplassen and Bryggen. A taxi from the rank on Bergen Taxi's fixed rate costs NOK 580 to 890 to the centre, which for two or three people with bags is often close to a chauffeur fare.

For the classic one-day fjord loop, book Norway in a Nutshell: the Bergen Line to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway down to Flåm, and a zero-emission fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord. No car can match that sequence, and we would not try. The Sognefjordekspressen bus serves Voss, Flåm and Sogndal, and Kystbussen runs the coast to Stavanger.

A chauffeur is the better answer when the group is a family with children and suitcases, when you want to stop where you like along the Hardangerfjord, when a cruise call gives you one day and no slack, or when the hotel sits somewhere the train and bus do not reach. The full fare comparison is on Bergen taxi versus chauffeur.

Are Bergen chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. In Norway every paid car with up to eight passenger seats needs a taxi licence, the drosjeløyve, granted by the county council under the Yrkestransportlova; for Bergen that is Vestland. The separate party-car licence that limousines once used was abolished on 1 November 2020. Since 2024 each licence holder must be connected to a licensed dispatch centre and drivers need a kjøreseddel, and from 1 January 2026 a holder stays with one dispatch centre but can take work from several booking services. Licences and insurance are checked before an operator can accept a RYDES booking.

How does a chauffeur differ from a Bergen taxi?

Legally they sit under the same licence. The difference is how the trip is bought: a chauffeur is booked ahead in the vehicle class you chose, at a total agreed before the day, with flight tracking and waiting time built in. A taxi is taken from the rank or ordered on demand, and must give you its price before the trip starts. See Bergen taxi versus chauffeur.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at Flesland?

At the meeting point your chauffeur sends you before you land, together with the car, the plate and a working phone number. The standard pickup is free. Meet and greet, with your name inside arrivals, is a paid add-on. More detail is on the Bergen airport transfer page.

How long is the drive from Flesland to Bryggen?

About 20 to 35 minutes outside the rush hours and 35 to 55 minutes in the weekday peaks around the toll ring. The distance is around 16 to 20 km depending on the exact address. See Flesland to Bryggen and Flesland to Bergen centre.

Is Bybanen or Flybussen better than a chauffeur?

Sometimes, and often for one person. Bybanen line 1 runs from the terminal's lower floor to the centre in about 45 minutes for NOK 51, with up to four children free. Flybussen takes about 20 to 30 minutes for NOK 189 online or NOK 220 on board. A chauffeur makes more sense for a family with luggage, a late arrival, a destination outside the centre, or a direct run to the fjords.

What does a taxi from Flesland cost?

Bergen Taxi charges a fixed rate of NOK 580 to 890 between Flesland and the centre, as published in August 2026. Norwegian taxis must give you the price before the trip. A RYDES price is in euros, fixed at booking, with tolls and VAT already in it. Compare on the taxi alternative page.

Is the Bergen toll ring included?

Yes. Every Bypakke Bergen toll passage on the route, including the toll point on the airport road, is inside the quoted price, whatever the time of day or the type of car. Weekday rush rates apply between 06:30 and 09:00 and between 14:30 and 16:30, but they do not change what you pay us.

Are ferry fares included on fjord routes?

Yes. When a planned route crosses water, the car and passenger fare for the crossing is inside the fixed price. The drive to Stavanger includes two ferries and so does Ålesund. Waiting time at the ferry quay cannot be predicted, so allow for it in your plans. See Bergen to Stavanger.

Is VAT included in the price?

Yes. Passenger transport in Norway carries 12 percent VAT, mva, and it is part of the total you are quoted. RYDES quotes in euros and your card is charged in euros, so there is no separate tax line at the end.

Can you collect me from a cruise ship in Bergen?

Yes, from both Skolten and Jekteviken. Give the ship name and the date, and your chauffeur tells you which side of the berth to walk to. Fifteen minutes of free waiting applies at the quay; on a busy day it is worth booking a little later than the scheduled arrival. See Bergen cruise terminal transfers.

Can I see Hardanger in a day from a cruise ship?

Yes. Norheimsund on the Hardangerfjord is roughly 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 50 each way in good conditions, which leaves several hours at the fjord on a typical port call. Book it by the hour so the car waits between stops, and tell us your all-aboard time. See Hardanger from Bergen.

Should I take Norway in a Nutshell or a car to Flåm?

For the classic one-day loop, take the train-and-boat package: the Bergen Line, the Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Flåm and a zero-emission cruise on the Nærøyfjord. A car makes more sense for a family with luggage, when you want to stop along the way, or when you are moving on rather than coming back. Flesland to Flåm is about 3 to 3 and a half hours. See Flåm and fjord transfers.

Do the fjord roads close in winter?

Winter makes them slower. High mountain roads take longer in snow and ice, and heavy weather can hold traffic up for a while. Between November and March, allow extra time to Voss and Flåm and book the SUV class. Dispatch contacts you ahead of the day if the planned route looks uncertain, and the fixed price does not rise if the journey takes longer.

How far is Voss from Bergen airport?

About 103 km, usually 2 hours to 2 hours 15 on a clear road and up to 3 hours in winter conditions. Voss sits on the Bergen Line, on the way to the Sognefjord. The Sognefjordekspressen bus also serves it. See Flesland to Voss and Voss from Bergen.

How much free waiting do I get?

Sixty minutes at Flesland, counted from when the aircraft actually lands rather than the timetable. Pickups elsewhere, including the cruise quays and hotels, include fifteen minutes. Beyond that, waiting is billed in 15-minute blocks at the rate for your vehicle class, and you are told before any of it starts.

How far ahead should I book in Bergen?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and up to a year ahead. Book early for the cruise season, for the 75th Bergen International Festival from 26 May to 12 June 2027 and for Bergenfest the same June. Cancelling is free until 24 hours before pickup. For regular travel, see corporate travel in Bergen.

Can I hire a car by the hour in Bergen?

Yes. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum and continues in 30-minute steps, with the chauffeur waiting between stops. It suits client days in the centre, weddings and private fjord days. See hourly chauffeur in Bergen and wedding transportation.
