What Geneva asks of a car.

A delegation at the Palais des Nations, a client lunch in the Old Town and a family heading for the snow need different things from the same fleet.

What is a Geneva chauffeur service?

A Geneva chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at an agreed price, carried out by a VTC company authorised by the canton's PCTN (Service de police du commerce et de lutte contre le travail au noir) under the LTVTC, Geneva's law on taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles. By law the car cannot cruise for passengers or be hailed, and the fare is fixed before the journey starts. Whether you need a Geneva Airport transfer, an hourly car service between meetings or a black car to a private bank, the vehicle class, the chauffeur and the price are settled before the day.

That matters most on the days Geneva gets difficult. When the Route de Ferney stalls at 08:00, when the Pont du Mont-Blanc is the only way across and everyone wants it, or when a February Saturday puts half of Europe on the road to the Alps, a reserved Geneva car service costs what it cost when you booked. The 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette and any airport access or parking charge for your pickup are already in the figure, written in francs.

The same booking reaches well past the city. GVA to the Palais des Nations for delegations, GVA to Lausanne along the lake, the ski transfers that fill the winter, and the French sector for the Pays de Gex. If a metered taxi is the comparison you are making, the Geneva taxi alternative sets the two side by side, and organisations moving staff through the city every month can put it all on corporate travel in Geneva with central billing.

Geneva's airport, all three doors of it.

Geneva has a single airport, but it can be entered from Switzerland, from France, or through a separate terminal for private aircraft. Which one you use changes the pickup.

Times run from the pickup point to the door, for a direct private car. Peak means the weekday commuter hours, roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:00, when the Route de Ferney and Grand-Saconnex fill up. Ski Saturdays between December and April, and the trade days of Watches and Wonders at Palexpo, are their own category.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

Geneva Airport does not let anyone collect passengers at the drop-off lane, and the French sector is a different trip by road. These are the rules your chauffeur works to.

GVA, Swiss sector.

Geneva Airport handled 17.85 million passengers in 2025, a fraction above the year before and still slightly short of 2019. Kiss & Fly sits on the Departures level and is free, but it is for dropping people off only, and pickups are not allowed there. Arriving passengers are met from the car parks instead: P1 connects directly to the Arrivals hall, and P2, the open-air short-stay area about three minutes' walk away, gives up to five minutes free and then charges CHF 5 for an hour.

Whatever the car park costs for your collection is inside the RYDES price, and you never see it. Chauffeurs working for a VTC company at Geneva need an airport access card under the airport chapter of the LTVTC, which the operator holds before it can accept a GVA booking. Driving times onward are on GVA to Cornavin and GVA to the Palais des Nations.

  • The car park, the free defaultYour chauffeur names the car park and the exact meeting spot in the message sent before you land, usually P1 or P2.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits inside Arrivals with your name, and walks you to the car. Worth it with children, a lot of luggage or a first visit.
  • Not at Kiss & FlyThe Departures drop-off lane is closed to pickups, so please do not wait there for your car.

GVA, French sector.

Some flights to and from French destinations use the French sector of the same building. By road it is reached only from Ferney-Voltaire, on the customs road signed Aéroport Secteur France, so a car on the Swiss side cannot simply pull round to it. Passengers with tickets on the same day can cross between the sectors inside the terminal; everyone else has to go the long way by road.

The French side is the natural door for the Pays de Gex, Divonne-les-Bains, the Ain and the Jura. Because a journey from there into France crosses a border, dispatch confirms it when you book rather than accepting it automatically. If you are heading into Geneva itself, the Swiss-side Arrivals hall is almost always the simpler pickup.

Business aviation, T3.

Private and charter flights use the T3 terminal on the Chemin des Papillons, away from the main passenger building. The airport lists Jet Aviation, Signature Flight Support, Dassault Aviation Business Services and Global Jet among the companies working there.

Your chauffeur collects at the T3 door your handling company specifies, and the tail number or handler goes in the booking notes so dispatch can follow the arrival. Onward times match the main terminal, so GVA to Cornavin is a fair guide for the lakeside hotels.

Checked against public sources in October 2026. Car park layouts change, so the message your chauffeur sends before landing is the final word on where to walk.

VAT, the vignette and the airport.

Geneva has no congestion charge. What adds to a journey here is Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, the airport car park and, on French runs, a border, and each of them reaches you differently depending on how you travel.

Swiss VAT is 8.1 percent and applies to passenger transport. On a cross-border run to Annecy, Évian or Chamonix, only the kilometres driven inside Switzerland are taxed. The motorway vignette costs CHF 40 a year and covers the A1 towards Lausanne and the Valais, and any French motorway tolls on a route that uses them are counted in the fare. Snow chains are compulsory only where signed, and the operator plans the resort runs for it.

Swiss price display rules require the price shown to be the full amount you pay, VAT and fixed surcharges included. A RYDES quote follows that rule: the total in francs is what you are charged. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. The single thing outside the quote is paid parking when you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges.

The airport taxi flat fare is a fair number for one person going a short way. Where a booked car pays for itself is a family with ski bags, a run that continues past the city limits, or a hotel on the left bank at 08:15 when the bridges are full. The fuller comparison is on Geneva taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

The airport is close to the centre, so in Geneva the distance is rarely the problem. Two bridges, a commuter corridor and the lake shore decide most journeys.

Peak in Geneva means commuter traffic over the bridges and on the airport side of the city, and border queues on the French runs. Times above assume clear roads in daylight. Snow on the A1 or a closed border lane can add more than any rush hour, so for a flight you cannot miss in winter, build in a buffer of half the off-peak time again.

Beyond the city: the lake and the snow.

Long runs are priced as one fixed fare from door to door, not by the hour, so a Saturday queue at the Chamonix turn-off is the operator's problem rather than yours.

Distances are from Geneva Airport. Inside Switzerland, every paid journey is carried out by a Swiss-registered licensed operator, because cars registered abroad may not carry paying passengers between two Swiss points. Runs into France, including Chamonix and the French resorts, are confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. Méribel and the other French valleys are quoted to the exact chalet address you give, and for Bern see chauffeur service in Bern.

Book an SUV or a Van for the resorts in winter. Snow chains are compulsory only where signed, and the operator plans the route around the weather on the day. Under an amendment to the LTVTC in force since 22 November 2025, every new taxi and VTC vehicle put into service in Geneva from 1 January 2028 must be fully electric, and every taxi and VTC from 1 July 2030, so the fleet will change over the coming years. Capacity and luggage are on the vehicle classes page; formal occasions, on limo service in Geneva.

What the Geneva price contains.

The figure you see before you book is the figure you pay, in Swiss francs, as Swiss price rules require.

Car park pickup
Collection from the car park your chauffeur names is the free default. Being met inside Arrivals with a name board is a paid add-on.
Free cancellation
Change or cancel at no charge up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full, because the car and chauffeur are already committed.

When you should not book us.

Geneva has a railway station directly under the airport terminal, and for a lot of arrivals it is the better choice.

If you are travelling alone with a small case to a hotel near Cornavin, take the train. It runs up to seven times an hour, reaches Cornavin in 7 minutes, and a Unireso zone 10 ticket costs CHF 3 for 60 minutes. The free ticket that used to come from a machine in the baggage hall ended on 1 January 2022, but hotel guests receive the Geneva Transport Card free for the length of their stay. Direct trains from the airport also run to Lausanne, Montreux, Sion and Brig, and in winter the seasonal Verbier Express runs at weekends and holidays. Visitors covering a lot of the country can buy a Swiss Travel Pass, CHF 254 for three consecutive days in second class.

A chauffeur is the better answer in other circumstances: skis and boot bags, a family, a group of three or more where the fares add up, a flight landing after the trains thin out, a chalet the railway does not reach, a day with several stops between the Palais des Nations and the left bank, or a client who should not carry luggage. That is most of why people book us in Geneva, but not all travel, and we would rather say so. The figures side by side are on Geneva taxi versus chauffeur.

Geneva questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Geneva Airport?

In a car park, not at the kerb. Kiss & Fly on the Departures level is for drop-offs only and pickups are not allowed there, so your chauffeur waits in P1, which connects directly to Arrivals, or P2, the open-air short-stay area about three minutes' walk away. The exact spot is in the message sent before you land. Meet and greet inside Arrivals is a paid add-on. See GVA airport transfer.

What is the French sector at Geneva Airport?

A part of the terminal used for some flights to and from France. By road it is reached only from Ferney-Voltaire, on the customs road signed Aéroport Secteur France, and it is the natural pickup for the Pays de Gex, Divonne, the Ain and the Jura. Passengers with same-day tickets can cross between sectors inside the terminal; otherwise it is a separate trip by road. Journeys from it into France are confirmed by dispatch at booking. See GVA French sector.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport charges included?

Yes. The 8.1 percent Swiss VAT, the motorway vignette, any French motorway tolls on the route and the GVA car park charge for your pickup are all inside the price quoted in Swiss francs. On cross-border trips only the Swiss kilometres carry VAT. The only cost outside the quote is paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges. Compare it on Geneva taxi versus chauffeur.

Do I need to add a tip in Geneva?

No. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline. Swiss price display rules require the price shown to be the total you pay.

Are your Geneva chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Each journey is run by a company holding a VTC operating authorisation under the LTVTC, Geneva's law on taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles, in force since 1 November 2022. Its drivers hold the federal code 121 permit for professional passenger transport, have passed the cantonal VTC exam and carry a VTC driver card from the PCTN. They are employed with social insurance and paid at least the Geneva minimum wage, and those working at GVA hold an airport access card.

Can I hail a chauffeur car in Geneva?

No. Under the LTVTC a VTC may work only on a prior, provable booking. It may not cruise for passengers, accept a hail or look like a taxi, the fare is agreed before the ride, and the car must accept card payment. VTC vehicles also carry their own range of number plates. That is why every RYDES journey in Geneva is booked ahead. The same law shapes app platforms: the Federal Supreme Court ruled in May 2022, announced on 3 June 2022, that Uber drivers in Geneva are employees, and Uber stopped operating there from 4 June 2022 until it complied.

How long does it take from Geneva Airport to the city centre?

About 10 to 15 minutes to Cornavin and Pâquis off-peak, and 20 to 35 minutes in commuter traffic. The Palais des Nations is 8 to 12 minutes off-peak, and the Old Town on the left bank 15 to 20 minutes, up to 40 when the Pont du Mont-Blanc is busy. See GVA to Cornavin and GVA to the Palais des Nations.

Should I just take the train from Geneva Airport?

Often, yes. The station is directly under the terminal, trains reach Cornavin in 7 minutes up to seven times an hour, and a Unireso zone 10 ticket costs CHF 3 for 60 minutes. Hotel guests also get the Geneva Transport Card free for their stay. For one traveller to a hotel near Cornavin, the train is hard to beat. A chauffeur is worth it with skis, children, several people, a late arrival or a destination the trains do not reach.

How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport?

Airport taxis charge a flat CHF 50 to the right bank and CHF 60 to the left bank. A RYDES price is quoted for your exact address before you book, includes VAT and the airport car park, and includes 60 minutes of free waiting from the landing time. The comparison is on the Geneva taxi alternative.

How long is the transfer from Geneva to Chamonix?

Chamonix is about 87 km from the airport, typically 70 to 80 minutes on a clear day, and 100 to 150 minutes on a ski Saturday when the changeover traffic peaks. Because Chamonix is in France, the run is confirmed by dispatch at booking. See GVA to Chamonix and Geneva ski transfers.

How long does it take to drive from Geneva to Verbier or Crans-Montana?

Verbier is about 161 km, usually 2 hours to 2 hours 15, and 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 15 on busy winter Saturdays. Crans-Montana is about 181 km, 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 off-peak and up to 3 hours 30 at peak. Both are domestic Swiss journeys, so a Swiss-registered licensed operator carries them out. See GVA to Verbier and GVA to Crans-Montana.

Can you drive me from Geneva to Zermatt?

To Täsch, which is as far as cars go. Zermatt is car-free, so the hand-over is at Täsch, about 230 km from the airport, and you continue from there without the car. The drive is usually 2 hours 50 to 3 hours 10, and 3 hours 30 to 4 hours 15 at peak. See GVA to Zermatt and chauffeur service in Zermatt.

Do you go to Annecy, Évian and the French resorts?

Yes, subject to confirmation. Domestic Swiss journeys are always carried out by a Swiss-registered operator, while runs into France are confirmed by dispatch when you book rather than sold automatically. Annecy is about 44 km through the Bardonnex crossing, Évian about 49 km. See Geneva to Annecy and Geneva to Évian.

Can one chauffeur drive me across Switzerland in a day?

Sometimes, and dispatch plans it. Chauffeur working time is governed by the federal ARV 2 rules: at most 9 hours' driving between daily rests, a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, and 11 hours of daily rest, recorded on a digital tachograph. A Geneva to Täsch run fits easily. A very long day with waiting, such as Geneva to St Moritz and back, may need a break or a second driver, and the operator arranges it before the day. See hourly chauffeur hire.

Can I book a car by the hour for Palais des Nations meetings?

Yes, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. The chauffeur waits between the Palais, the missions and your hotel, and nothing extra runs while you are inside. Human Rights Council sessions in February to March, June to July and September to October make the area busier, so book early. See Palais des Nations transfers.

When should I book early in Geneva?

Book at least 3 hours before pickup; reservations open up to a year ahead. Book well in advance for ski Saturdays from December to April, the Fête de l'Escalade on 11 to 13 December 2026, Watches and Wonders at Palexpo on 5 to 11 April 2027, and Human Rights Council sessions, the 63rd running from 7 September to 7 October 2026. See Palexpo transfers.

What if my flight into Geneva is delayed?

Add the flight number and dispatch tracks the aircraft. A delay moves the pickup automatically at no cost, and the 60 free minutes start from the actual landing time. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments and you are told before it begins. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
