Zermatt Chauffeur Service | Geneva and Zurich Airport to Täsch — RYDES

Zermatt, Valais

Airport to Täschthen twelve minutes by train

Zermatt has been car-free since 1961, so private cars stop at Täsch, about 5 km down the valley. We drive you there from Geneva, Zurich, Basel or Milan at one fixed price in Swiss francs and hand over at the terminal, with the shuttle train, a licensed e-taxi or your hotel doing the rest.

How a Zermatt trip actually works.

No car reaches the village, so every booking is planned around the terminal at Täsch, the valley road above Visp and the weather in between.

What is a Zermatt chauffeur service?

A Zermatt chauffeur service is a pre-booked private car, at a fixed price in Swiss francs, that carries you from an airport or another town to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, the last point private vehicles may reach before car-free Zermatt. It is run by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator whose drivers hold the federal permit for professional passenger transport, shown as code 121 on the driving licence under Art. 25 VZV, with driving and rest hours recorded under the Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2). The final 5 km into the village are by shuttle train, licensed Zermatt e-taxi or your hotel's own vehicle. Typical bookings are a Geneva airport transfer to Zermatt, a Zurich airport to Zermatt car service or a ski transfer for a family with kit.

What you are buying is the road from the runway to the valley, done by someone who drives it every week. The Zurich airport route may cross the Lötschberg on the car train or go the long way round through Lausanne when snow closes the shortcut; the Geneva route follows Lake Geneva and the Rhône. Either way the car-train fare, the vignette and 8.1 percent VAT are already inside the number you see.

Inside the valley the booking is just as fixed. A Zermatt car service covers runs between Täsch, Saas-Fee, Visp, Brig and Sion; an hourly chauffeur suits a day around the Valais resorts such as Crans-Montana; and a reserved car is the taxi alternative for anyone comparing a long airport taxi against a known fare. For companies sending teams to the mountains, group transportation keeps several vehicles on one dispatch plan, and city links run onward through Geneva and Zurich.

The airports that serve Zermatt.

Zermatt has no airport of its own. Every trip starts at one of four international airports, or the regional field at Sion, and ends at the terminal in Täsch.

Drive times run to the Täsch terminal, not to the village, and assume a direct private vehicle. Peak here means Saturday ski changeovers on the A9 and in the Mattertal, and Friday to Sunday queues for the Lötschberg car train, rather than weekday rush hours. Snow, chain rules and closures sit outside both columns. At the airport end, Zurich charges every vehicle pass through its arrival forecourts and Geneva does not allow pickups at Kiss & Fly; any forecourt or short-term parking charge for your pickup is inside the price. At EuroAirport, dispatch confirms which sector your chauffeur meets you in.

Where your chauffeur hands over.

The car stops at Täsch. From there, a 12-minute shuttle train, a licensed e-taxi or your hotel's own vehicle covers the last 5 km into a village that has kept out private cars since 1961.

Matterhorn Terminal Täsch.

The Matterhorn Terminal Täsch is a covered station and car park with 2,100 spaces, 131 of them in an E-Zone with charging, and it is open 24 hours a day. Your chauffeur pulls into the free Kiss & Ride lane, which allows cars and buses to stop for up to 30 minutes, unloads the bags and walks you to the platform.

The road beyond Täsch, the cantonal NG13, has been closed to motor traffic since the Valais Council of State decision of 14 June 2020, except for authorised vehicles. Permits are issued through the Strasse NG13 Zermatt app, introduced on 1 December 2024, and driving on without one costs CHF 100. Licensed Zermatt taxis may use it; a RYDES car does not.

  • Kiss & Ride, the free defaultThe chauffeur stops in the drop-off lane, unloads and helps you to the trains. Coming back, the car waits there for your train down.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onAt the airport, your chauffeur waits inside arrivals with your name. At Täsch the walk to the platform is part of every booking.
  • Luggage trolleysAvailable at the terminal for a CHF 5 deposit, and they roll straight onto the shuttle train.

The shuttle train.

The Täsch–Zermatt shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 05:55 to 21:55, with extra night trains from Thursday to Sunday, and takes about 12 minutes to Zermatt Bahnhofplatz. An adult single is CHF 8.60 and a return CHF 17.20; half fare is CHF 4.30, and it is free with a GA travelcard or for children under 6. The ticket is bought at the terminal and is not part of a RYDES price.

Arriving late is the case to plan. An evening landing at Geneva or Zurich can reach Täsch after the last regular departure at 21:55. From Thursday to Sunday the extra night trains cover it; on other nights dispatch times the run accordingly or arranges a handover to a licensed Zermatt taxi. The Geneva to Zermatt route page shows how the timing works backwards from the train.

Getting to your hotel in Zermatt.

At Zermatt Bahnhofplatz the choice is small and quiet: electric taxis from the 13 operators listed by Zermatt Tourism, free e-buses, horse-drawn carriages, or your hotel's own electric vehicle. Many hotels meet guests at the station if you tell them your train in advance.

Zermatt's taxi regulation changed on 1 November 2024, setting a price ceiling, and some fares rose sharply, with increases of up to 300 percent reported; hoteliers and Zermatt Tourism objected to the change. That fare is between you and the taxi operator or your hotel.

Terminal, train and road-permit facts were checked against public sources in October 2026. Timetables change with the season; your chauffeur's pre-arrival message names the train you are aiming for.

Car trains, the vignette and the last 5 km.

Switzerland has no congestion charges. On a Zermatt run the costs come from a sticker on the windscreen, a train that carries the car through a mountain and the separate journey from Täsch into the village.

From Zurich, Bern or Basel the quickest way into Valais is usually the Lötschberg car train from Kandersteg to Goppenstein, about 15 minutes through the tunnel, departing at least every 30 minutes by day. The fare is CHF 28 Monday to Thursday and CHF 31 Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, paid at the station. In winter the alternatives are the Furka car train from Realp to Oberwald, about 20 minutes and running all year, or the all-road route through Lausanne. The Grimsel, Furka and Nufenen passes open in summer only. An avalanche suspended the Lötschberg service from 16 to 18 February 2026, which is why dispatch keeps the long route in reserve.

Every route also uses the motorway, so the CHF 40 annual vignette applies, and 8.1 percent Swiss VAT is charged on passenger transport. In a RYDES quote the vignette, the car-train fare and VAT are all counted in the price before you see it. Parking at Täsch is not included, because the handover uses the free Kiss & Ride, and neither is your shuttle train ticket or a Zermatt e-taxi.

How charges reach the traveller on a Zermatt trip, depending on how you get there. Rail fares are SBB and Matterhorn Terminal tariffs as of October 2026.

The route choice between the car train and the road through Lausanne is made by dispatch on the day, based on weather and Kandersteg queues, and it never changes what you were quoted. Drivers parking themselves will find more than 1,000 further spaces offered by taxi firms and hotels in Täsch. The full cost comparison against a long airport taxi is on Zermatt taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Distance matters less than the day of the week. The second column below is a Saturday in February or a Friday at the Lötschberg, not a weekday rush hour.

The Mattertal road is the weak link. In January 2018 about 13,000 visitors were stranded when the road and the railway closed for avalanche danger, and Air Zermatt flew people out to Täsch. In June 2024 landslides cut the Visp–Täsch railway and the road near Randa and Herbriggen, and Zermatt was cut off for a time. Dispatch watches Mattertal road reports before every run and tells you early if a departure needs to move.

A long Alpine day is regulated as well as tiring. Under the Chauffeurverordnung a chauffeur may drive at most 9 hours between daily rests and must take 45 minutes after 4.5 hours at the wheel, so a run to St Moritz or a Zurich round trip in one day may need a planned stop or a second driver. Dispatch builds that in when quoting. Milan and other cross-border runs are confirmed at booking rather than sold automatically.

Where we pick up.

When you should not book us.

For a car-free village, the train is the obvious competitor, and for many people it is the better choice.

Swiss trains reach Zermatt in about 3.5 hours from Zurich Airport and about 4 hours from Geneva and Basel airports, running every half hour, and they arrive in the middle of the village with no change at Täsch. SBB offers a luggage service so cases can travel separately. For most travellers with ordinary luggage, that is genuinely the better option, and a Swiss Travel Pass costs CHF 254 for three consecutive days in second class. Coming from St Moritz, the Glacier Express takes about 7.5 hours at CHF 159 in second class or CHF 272 in first, plus a CHF 54 reservation, though it does not run from 11 October to 4 December 2026.

A chauffeur makes sense when the train does not: a family with skis, boot bags and small children to manage through every change of train, a group of six or more, an arrival too late for a sensible connection, a stop in Saas-Fee or Crans-Montana on the way, or a disrupted rail line. Air Zermatt also flies helicopter transfers, about 15 minutes from Sion and 45 from Geneva, priced on request and subject to weather and daylight; it is not a RYDES service. The side-by-side cost picture is on Zermatt taxi versus chauffeur.

Zermatt questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

Can a chauffeur drive me into Zermatt?

No. Zermatt has been car-free since 1961 and private vehicles, electric cars included, may drive only as far as Täsch, about 5 km away. The Täsch–Zermatt road is closed to motor traffic except authorised vehicles, and only licensed Zermatt taxis may use it for paying passengers. RYDES hands over at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, and the shuttle train, a licensed e-taxi or your hotel completes the last 5 km.

Where does the chauffeur drop me at Täsch?

In the free Kiss & Ride lane at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, which allows cars and buses to stop for up to 30 minutes. The chauffeur unloads your luggage and walks you to the shuttle train platform. Luggage trolleys are available for a CHF 5 deposit. See the Täsch terminal guide.

How much is the shuttle train from Täsch to Zermatt?

An adult single costs CHF 8.60 and a return CHF 17.20; half fare is CHF 4.30, and travel is free with a GA travelcard or for children under 6. Trains leave every 20 minutes from 05:55 to 21:55, with extra night trains Thursday to Sunday, and take about 12 minutes to Zermatt Bahnhofplatz. It is not part of a RYDES fare.

How do I get from Zermatt station to my hotel?

By licensed electric taxi, of which Zermatt Tourism lists 13 operators, by free e-bus, by horse-drawn carriage, or by your hotel's own electric vehicle. Many hotels meet guests at the station if you give them your train time in advance. Zermatt's taxi regulation of 1 November 2024 introduced a price ceiling, and some fares rose sharply, so check the cost with your hotel.

How long is the drive from Geneva airport to Zermatt?

About 231 km to Täsch, typically 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 45, and 4 hours to 4 hours 45 on a Saturday changeover day. Add 12 minutes for the shuttle train into the village. See Geneva airport to Zermatt.

How long is the drive from Zurich airport to Zermatt?

Via the Lötschberg car train it is about 257 km to Täsch and usually 3 hours 30 to 4 hours, with 15 to 60 minutes of loading queues at weekends. The Furka car train route is 241 km and 4 hours to 4 hours 30, and the all-road winter fallback via Lausanne is 398 km and 5 hours to 5 hours 30. See Zurich airport to Zermatt.

Are car-train fares and the vignette included?

Yes. The CHF 40 motorway vignette and the car-train fare, CHF 28 Monday to Thursday or CHF 31 Friday to Sunday on the Lötschberg, are inside the RYDES price when the route uses them, along with 8.1 percent Swiss VAT and any airport forecourt charge. Parking, the shuttle train ticket and the Zermatt e-taxi are not. The full breakdown is on Zermatt taxi versus chauffeur.

Do I need to tip the chauffeur?

No. Service is included in the price. Anything extra is voluntary, offered once at payment, and you can decline.

Are your Zermatt chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every domestic journey is driven by a Swiss-registered licensed chauffeur operator. Drivers hold the federal permit for professional passenger transport, code 121 on the driving licence under Art. 25 VZV, which requires extra theory and practical tests and regular medical checks, and their driving and rest times are recorded by digital tachograph under the Chauffeurverordnung (ARV 2). A federal reform of the code 121 permit went to consultation until April 2026; no decision has been made.

Can you collect me from Milan Malpensa?

Often, but it is confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically, because it is a cross-border journey. The route is about 200 km over the Simplon Pass, which is open year-round, usually 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 45 and more in snow. On cross-border trips, Swiss VAT applies only to the Swiss kilometres. See Milan Malpensa to Zermatt.

What happens if the Mattertal road closes?

Dispatch watches Mattertal road conditions before every run and contacts you early if a departure needs to move. Closures happen: avalanche danger in January 2018 and landslides near Randa in June 2024 both cut Zermatt off. If the road is shut, a booking is rescheduled with you rather than attempted.

Should I take the train to Zermatt instead?

Quite possibly. The train takes about 3.5 hours from Zurich Airport and about 4 hours from Geneva and Basel airports, half-hourly, and arrives in the centre of Zermatt with no change at Täsch. SBB offers a luggage service. For most travellers with ordinary luggage it is the better option; a chauffeur suits families with ski kit, groups, late arrivals and trips with a stop on the way.

Can you take me from Zermatt to Saas-Fee?

Yes. Saas-Fee is about 38 km from Täsch, usually 45 minutes to 1 hour, and it is also car-free, so the chauffeur hands over at the garage at the village entrance. The preliminary 2026–27 Saas-Fee season runs from 31 October 2026 to 18 April 2027. See Zermatt to Saas-Fee.

How do I get from Zermatt to St Moritz?

The Glacier Express takes about 7.5 hours at CHF 159 in second class or CHF 272 in first, plus a CHF 54 reservation, but does not run from 11 October to 4 December 2026. By road it is a full day, and driving-time rules may mean a planned stop or a second driver, which dispatch includes in the quote. See Zermatt to St Moritz and the St Moritz page.

When is Zermatt busiest for transfers?

The winter season, especially Christmas to New Year and February, and above all Saturdays, when ski weeks change over and the A9 and the Mattertal slow down. Lötschberg loading queues build from Friday to Sunday. Zermatt Unplugged runs from 6 to 10 April 2027. Book ski transfers as early as you can for those dates.

Can I hire a chauffeur by the hour in Valais?

Yes, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments, for a day between Täsch, Visp, Sion, Crans-Montana or Verbier. The car waits between stops, and paid parking is the only cost outside the quote. See hourly chauffeur in Valais.
