VAT, the island rules and the airport pickup.
Mallorca has no toll roads. What shapes the fare here is the regional VTC law, the airport's car park rules and the taxi tariff the island sets, and each reaches you differently.
Since 2017 the Sóller tunnel has been free, and no other road on the island charges a toll, so tolls never appear on a Mallorca booking. The 10 percent VAT that Spain applies to passenger transport is inside every RYDES price, and so is any car park charge incurred for your airport pickup. The Balearic tourist tax, the ITS, is a separate matter: your hotel or rental collects it per person per night, up to €4 in high season at the top category, and it never appears in a transfer fare.
The regional rules are tighter here than on the mainland. Ley 1/2024 requires every VTC trip in the Balearic Islands to be booked at least 30 minutes ahead with proof carried in the car, bars cruising and waiting at ports, airports, stations or hotels without a booking, and keeps VTCs off taxi ranks. A VTC may only work on the island where its authorisation is domiciled, so a Mallorca car does not cross to Ibiza and an Ibiza car does not work here. Decreto 6/2026, in force since 22 February 2026, ended the moratorium on new licences and capped surge pricing at 75 percent; Uber and Spain's competition authority, the CNMC, have challenged it in court. Mallorca also issued 75 temporary electric-only VTC licences for the 2025 and 2026 summers. A RYDES booking is made at least 3 hours ahead, so the 30-minute rule is met on every trip.
Nationally, a VTC holds an authorisation under the LOTT (Ley 16/1987) and its regulation, the ROTT, and each trip is entered in the Ministry of Transport's electronic register under Real Decreto 785/2021 before it begins. The vehicle carries no taxi markings and must start its trips in its home region, apart from pre-booked airport and port pickups heading back to that region. The law still contains a ratio of one VTC authorisation for every 30 taxis, but since the EU Court of Justice ruling of 8 June 2023 in Prestige and Limousine (C-50/21), Spanish courts no longer apply it automatically, as the Supreme Court confirmed in September 2026.
The island taxi tariff under Decreto 20/2025 starts at €2.50 by day and adds about €1.20 a kilometre, plus €4.65 from the airport or port. For a short hop into Palma the meter is the honest choice. The sums change on an hour-long drive to Pollença or Port d'Andratx with a family and six cases, which is where a fixed fare earns its place. The full breakdown is on Palma taxi versus chauffeur.
