One city, four ways to use a car.

Budapest is two towns joined by bridges, and the right booking depends on which side of the river the day is spent on.

What is a Budapest chauffeur service?

A Budapest chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed price and driven under the passenger-car service category of Hungarian Government Decree 176/2015, the licence Hungary keeps separate from the metered yellow taxi. The car carries white plates and its permit number on the right front door, has no roof sign, and can only be reserved ahead of time by the passenger or someone acting for them. That is the basis of every RYDES booking here, from a Budapest airport transfer to an hourly car service in Budapest or a black car service for an evening on the Buda side.

RYDES arranges the booking and a locally licensed operator carries out the journey. Price, vehicle class and pickup point are agreed before the day, and nothing on the trip can move them. A yellow taxi, by contrast, runs on the city's single official tariff, and the meter keeps counting by the minute while the car crawls across a bridge. If you want to compare the two properly, the Budapest taxi alternative page sets them side by side, and the Budapest car service page explains the classes.

The same reservation reaches well past the city line. BUD to Hungexpo for trade fairs, BUD to the Hungaroring for the Grand Prix, a pickup at the Belgrád rakpart cruise piers after a river cruise, and Budapest to Szentendre or Esztergom for a day on the river bend. Companies with people arriving every week can add corporate travel in Budapest, which brings central invoicing and traveller profiles to the same fleet.

Arriving in Budapest.

Hungary's capital is served by a single international airport, Budapest Ferenc Liszt, on the south-eastern edge of the city. Some travellers land in Vienna or Bratislava instead and come in by road.

Times are door to door for a direct private car. Peak here means roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 15:30 to 18:30 on weekdays, when the airport road and the inner ring both slow. Grand Prix weekend, the Sziget week in August and Saturday evenings in December belong in a category of their own. Cross-border runs from Vienna and Bratislava go only with a licensed operator confirmed for the other side of the border.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

The airport has one terminal building in two halves, and the rules for who collects where changed in August 2026. Inside the city the question is less where than how to recognise the right car.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt.

Every passenger flight at Ferenc Liszt uses Terminal 2, split into 2A and 2B and joined inside the building. The airport carried 19,632,894 passengers in 2025, 11.7 percent more than the year before, and the arrivals roads feel that growth at busy hours.

Ground-transport rules changed in August 2026. Taxis now pay HUF 800 to enter the airport, Főtaxi holds the only rank at the terminal kerb under a contract running to 2030, other taxi companies wait in a car park about 1.1 km away, and private cars have a covered pickup point between the two halves of the terminal. The arrangements were under review in September, so the exact spot your chauffeur uses is written into the message sent to you before you land. Any airport entry cost falls inside your price. Drive timings are on BUD to central Budapest.

  • Standard pickup, the free defaultYour chauffeur meets you at the pickup point named in the pre-arrival message, with the car close by.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onYour chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall with your name, which helps with a family, heavy bags or a first visit.
  • 2A or 2BBoth halves share one building. Tell us the flight number and the chauffeur works out the right exit from it.

Recognising a licensed car.

Every taxi in Budapest is yellow, with yellow number plates and a roof sign, and every one charges the same city tariff. A passenger-car service vehicle looks deliberately different: white plates, the permit number shown on the right front door, no roof sign, and a car under ten years old with air conditioning. If a car at the kerb has none of those marks and the driver offers you a ride, it is neither of the two legal options.

The driver is at least 20 and has held a category B licence for two years or more, and where the decree requires a written contract for the journey, the driver carries it in the car. Your RYDES confirmation shows the chauffeur's name, the vehicle and the plate three hours before pickup, so you can match all three before opening the door.

Hotels, piers and venues.

Central Pest is dense and many streets run one way, so your chauffeur times the arrival to the agreed minute at the hotel entrance rather than circling the block. For river cruises, collection is at the Belgrád rakpart piers on the Pest bank, timed to the disembarkation slot your cruise line gives you.

Event days are different. The gates at Hungexpo in Kőbánya get busy on the opening morning of a fair, and the roads to the Hungaroring at Mogyoród fill up on race weekend. The operator plans the approach for the day, and the meeting point goes into your confirmation.

The airport facts above were checked in October 2026, after the August change and during the review that followed it. If the rules move again, your chauffeur's pre-arrival message is the authority on where to walk.

Tariff, vignette and the airport fee.

Three things shape a fare here: the official taxi tariff, the national motorway vignette and the airport's new entry fee, and each one lands differently depending on how you travel.

Since 1 August 2026 every Budapest taxi runs on one official tariff set under city decree 31/2013: HUF 1,300 to start, HUF 521 per kilometre and HUF 130 per minute. Trips from the airport start at HUF 2,100, which includes an HUF 800 airport surcharge. A ride from the terminal to central Pest comes to about HUF 14,000 on the meter. Ubers and Bolts in Budapest are those same yellow taxis: Uber left Hungary in 2016 and came back in 2024 working only with licensed taxis, and Bolt is listed by BKK as a licensed taxi company.

Hungarian motorways need an e-vignette, the e-matrica, which cost HUF 5,550 for a day or about HUF 6,900 for ten days for a car in 2026. A chauffeur heading to Vienna, Bratislava or Balaton uses the motorway, and the vignette is already counted in your price. VAT is included in the price. RYDES quotes in euros; your card is charged in euros. The tariff, vignette and fee figures on this page stay in forints because that is how they are set.

How charges reach the passenger in Budapest, by way of travelling. Taxi figures are the official city tariff in force from 1 August 2026.

Tourist tax is a separate matter. Each Budapest district sets its own, some at 4 percent of the room price and others at a flat HUF 650 to 800 a night, under a national cap of HUF 830, and your hotel or apartment collects it, never your chauffeur. More on fares and timing at Budapest taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

The airport sits on the Pest side, so anything on the Buda bank adds a bridge, and the bridges are where Budapest traffic gathers. Plan with the upper figure at rush hour.

Times assume a normal working day. Grand Prix weekend at Mogyoród, the Sziget week in August and Saturday evenings during the Christmas markets each add more delay than the rush hour does. For a flight you cannot miss on one of those days, add half the off-peak time again.

Out along the Danube and beyond.

Each intercity run is one fixed fare for the whole journey, not a meter or an hourly rate, so a slow M1 on a Friday afternoon costs you time but not money.

Distances are measured from the airport, where many of these runs begin. Your fare is fixed to the actual pickup address. Vienna and Bratislava are cross-border journeys, booked only when a licensed operator for the far side has confirmed the trip, and dispatch checks that before accepting. For the cities at the other end, see chauffeur service in Vienna and chauffeur service in Bratislava.

What a Budapest price includes.

No meter running on the bridge, no per-minute charge, and no extra line that appears once you have stepped out.

VAT and the vignette
VAT is included in the price, and so is the e-matrica motorway vignette on any route that needs it. You see a single total in euros.
Airport entry
Whatever the airport charges a vehicle collecting at Terminal 2 is already counted, including under the rules introduced in August 2026.
Tipping is up to you
The chauffeur's pay for the job was agreed before it was accepted. You can add a gratuity when paying, or leave it.
Flight tracking
Share the flight number and we follow it. If the aircraft is early or late, the pickup moves with it at no cost.
An hour at the airport
Sixty minutes free from the real landing time, enough for passport control and the baggage belt. Fifteen minutes free at any other pickup.
Standard pickup
Collection at the airport's pickup point costs nothing extra. A chauffeur inside arrivals with your name is a paid add-on.
Free cancellation
Cancel or change for free until 24 hours before pickup. Within 24 hours the full fare is charged, since the car and chauffeur are already committed.
A licensed operator
Each Budapest car is run by an operator licensed for passenger-car service under Decree 176/2015, with permit and insurance checked before any booking is taken.
Child seats and pets
Child seats are a paid add-on, supplied for you and fitted by the parent. Pets are a paid add-on too; service animals ride free.
Outside the price
Paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges for it, and the tourist tax your accommodation collects.

When you should not book us.

Budapest's airport bus is cheap and direct, and for one kind of traveller it is the right answer.

Flying in alone with only a carry-on and staying near Deák Ferenc tér, take the 100E. It runs from Terminal 2 to Deák Ferenc tér in about 35 minutes, every 10 to 12 minutes, and leaves you at a central metro interchange. Check the current ticket price at the airport, as we have not confirmed the 2026 fare. If you just want a car now and have no booking, a yellow taxi from the Főtaxi rank to central Pest comes to about HUF 14,000 on the official tariff.

A chauffeur is worth paying for in other situations: more luggage than you want to drag across the Deák Ferenc tér interchange, three or more people, small children, a late arrival, a hotel on the Buda side, a fair at Hungexpo, a race at the Hungaroring, or a day that strings several stops together. That accounts for most bookings, but not every journey, and it is better said here than discovered later. Fares and times side by side are on Budapest taxi versus chauffeur.

How do I get from Budapest Airport to the city centre?

Three ways. A pre-booked chauffeur takes 30 to 40 minutes off-peak to Lipótváros or Andrássy út, at a fixed euro price. The 100E bus goes from Terminal 2 to Deák Ferenc tér in about 35 minutes, every 10 to 12 minutes. A yellow taxi from the rank comes to about HUF 14,000 on the official meter. See BUD to central Budapest.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Ferenc Liszt Airport?

At the pickup point named in the message we send before you land. Terminal 2 pickup rules changed in August 2026 and were still under review in September, so we confirm the exact spot close to your arrival. A chauffeur waiting in the arrivals hall with your name is a paid add-on. Terminal detail is on the Budapest airport transfer page.

Is a chauffeur car in Budapest the same as a taxi?

No. Hungarian Government Decree 176/2015 creates two categories. A taxi is metered, yellow, and can be hailed, ranked or booked. A passenger-car service vehicle has white plates, its permit number on the right front door and no roof sign, and can only be booked in advance by the passenger or their agent. RYDES bookings are always in the second category.

Can I hail a RYDES car on the street or find one at a rank?

No. Under the passenger-car service rules a chauffeur car can only carry a booking made in advance, so it never picks up from the street and never waits at a taxi rank. Book at least 3 hours ahead through the site or the Budapest car service page.

Are your Budapest chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every journey is carried out by a Hungarian operator licensed for passenger-car service under Decree 176/2015. The decree requires drivers aged 20 or over with at least two years on a category B licence and vehicles under ten years old with air conditioning. Licensing and insurance are checked before an operator can accept a booking.

Do Uber and Bolt work in Budapest?

Yes, but both bring you a yellow taxi. Uber left Hungary in 2016 and returned in 2024 using licensed yellow taxis only, and Bolt is listed by BKK as a licensed taxi company. Either way you pay the official city tariff on a meter rather than a fixed price. The comparison is on Budapest taxi alternative.

How much is a taxi in Budapest?

From 1 August 2026 the official tariff is HUF 1,300 to start, HUF 521 per kilometre and HUF 130 per minute, the same for every taxi in the city. Airport trips start at HUF 2,100, which includes an HUF 800 airport surcharge. The airport to central Pest is about HUF 14,000.

Are VAT, tolls and airport fees included?

Yes. VAT is included in the price, and so are the e-matrica motorway vignette on routes that need it and any airport charge for collecting at Terminal 2. The price is shown in euros. Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges, is the only thing outside it.

Who collects the Budapest tourist tax?

Your hotel or apartment, not your chauffeur. Each district sets its own rate, some at 4 percent of the room price and others at a flat HUF 650 to 800 a night, with a national cap of HUF 830. It never appears on a RYDES booking.

How long does BUD to Buda Castle take?

About 35 to 45 minutes off-peak and 50 to 80 minutes at weekday rush hour, because the run ends with a Danube bridge. The road distance is about 25 km. See BUD to Buda Castle.

Can you meet my river cruise at the Danube piers?

Yes. We collect at the Belgrád rakpart piers on the Pest bank, timed to the disembarkation slot your cruise line gives you, and can take you to the airport, a hotel or straight to Vienna. From the airport the drive is about 30 to 40 minutes off-peak. See Danube cruise pier transfers and BUD to Belgrád rakpart.

Do you drive to the Hungarian Grand Prix?

Yes. The 2027 race is on Sunday 1 August at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, about 35 km from the airport. Traffic restrictions on race weekend are heavy, so book as early as possible, and consider an hourly booking that holds the car for the return. See Hungaroring Grand Prix transfers and BUD to the Hungaroring.

Can I go from Budapest to Vienna by car?

Yes. Vienna is about 275 km by road, usually 3 hours to 3 hours 45, priced as one fixed fare. It is a cross-border journey, so dispatch confirms a licensed operator for the Austrian side before accepting it. See Budapest to Vienna and Budapest to Bratislava.

Can I book a car for a day trip to the Danube Bend?

Yes, as a fixed fare to one address or by the hour with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments, where the chauffeur waits at each stop. Szentendre is about 50 km and Esztergom about 82 km from the airport. See Danube Bend day trips and hourly chauffeur hire.

When should I book ahead in Budapest?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and reservations open up to a year out. Book early for the Grand Prix on 1 August 2027, Sziget on 10 to 14 August 2027, large fairs at Hungexpo and the Christmas markets, which run at Vörösmarty Square from 13 November to 31 December 2026 and at the Basilica from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027.

What happens if my flight to Budapest is delayed?

With your flight number we follow the aircraft, so a delay moves the pickup automatically at no cost and the free hour starts when you actually land. Beyond the free window, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate and you are told before it starts. Dispatch is available around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
