What a Sofia booking covers.

Most visitors either stay in the capital for work or pass straight through it on the way to the mountains. These four bookings handle both kinds of trip.

What is a Sofia chauffeur service?

A Sofia chauffeur service is a private car with a professional driver, reserved ahead of time at a price fixed before you travel, and driven by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Bulgaria under the country's Road Transport Act. RYDES handles the booking and the price; the licensed operator provides the vehicle and the chauffeur. The car is not hailed and not metered. Whether it is a SOF airport transfer, an hourly car service in Sofia or a black car to a meeting near the National Assembly, the class, the pickup time and the total are agreed first.

The value shows on the awkward days. A pre-booked Sofia car service keeps the same number when the airport road backs up at eight in the morning, when the first snow closes in on the road to Borovets, or when a conference empties Inter Expo Center at once. The fare you accept already includes VAT and the e-vignette for any national road on the route, and it is charged in euros, which have been Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026. Set against a metered cab, the full comparison is on Sofia taxi alternative.

Sofia is also a starting point. The capital sits within two and a half hours of the country's two big ski resorts and its best-known monastery, so a chauffeur here often drives the whole of a trip's first day: SOF to Bansko, SOF to Borovets, Sofia to Rila Monastery or Sofia to Plovdiv. Across the borders, Sofia to Thessaloniki, Skopje and Belgrade are priced as single fares. Firms with regular visitors use corporate travel in Sofia for one invoice across all of these routes.

Landing in Sofia.

Sofia has one passenger airport, east of the centre, run under a 35-year concession. It is close to the centre, so the question is less the distance than which terminal you land at and where you are heading.

Sofia Airport, with approximate road distance from Terminal 2 and typical door-to-door driving time to common destinations.

Drive times are door to door for a direct private car and widen the free-flow figures to what the roads actually do. In the city, peak means the weekday rush, roughly 07:30 to 09:30 and 17:00 to 19:30. For the ski rows, peak means a winter Saturday changeover or a snowfall, which slow the mountain sections more than any traffic. Distances to the centre from Terminal 1 are similar.

Two terminals, and finding your car.

Sofia Airport splits its airlines between two buildings a few kilometres apart. Knowing which one you land at decides how the pickup works and whether the metro is even an option.

Terminal 2.

Terminal 2 handles most scheduled airlines, the full-service carriers among them. Ryanair is the only low-cost airline that uses it. It is also the only terminal with a metro station: line M4 starts here. For a chauffeur, Terminal 2 is the more common pickup, and the chauffeur picks the way into town according to the hour. The timing to the centre is on SOF to Sofia centre.

The airport crossed 8 million passengers in a single year for the first time in 2025, reaching the milestone on 16 December. It is run by SOF Connect, which holds a 35-year concession, with Munich Airport International operating it. At that volume, the free waiting here starts at the real landing time rather than the timetable.

  • Standard pickup, the free defaultYour chauffeur sends the exact meeting point for your terminal in a message before you land, and waits there with the car close by.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall with your name, useful with children, a lot of luggage or a first visit.
  • Terminal 1 or 2Check your booking: low-cost and charter flights mostly arrive at Terminal 1, everything else at Terminal 2.
Sofia Airport · 900 × 600
Terminal 2 arrivals hall

Terminal 1.

Terminal 1 serves low-cost and charter flights, with Wizz Air and easyJet the main airlines. A free shuttle bus links it with Terminal 2 from 05:00 to 23:00, but there is no metro at Terminal 1. A chauffeur pickup here works exactly as at Terminal 2, and a charter arrival bound for the slopes can go straight onto a Bansko transfer without changing buildings.

If your flight changes terminal, or you booked one building and the airline moved you, it costs nothing extra: send the new flight number or tell dispatch and the chauffeur is redirected. The airport's official taxi company is the Yellow taxi firm, which has held that role since May 2023, and its taxis are the alternative if you have not booked. The price comparison is on taxi versus chauffeur in Sofia.

Arriving for the mountains.

Between mid-December and mid-April, a large share of arrivals at Sofia are skiers heading straight out of the city. Bansko's season is planned from 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with about 70 km of pistes; Borovets opens on 26 December 2026 and runs to the same closing date, with 58 km. Ski bags, boot bags and a family of four do not fit a saloon, which is why most of these bookings are an SUV or a van.

The Borovets run is the shorter, around 69 km, but the last part is a mountain road and slows sharply in snow. Bansko is about 167 km to the south, a longer drive that also ends in the mountains. Both are priced as one fixed fare to the hotel or chalet, however long the road takes on the day. Details are on SOF to Borovets and SOF to Bansko.

Terminal and airline facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Airlines move between terminals from season to season, so confirm yours on your booking, and treat your chauffeur's message as the final word on where to walk.

The vignette, VAT and the switch to the euro.

Bulgaria has no motorway toll booths for cars. What reaches a fare here is the electronic vignette, VAT, and since January a new currency, and the way each one lands on you depends on how you travel.

Cars on Bulgaria's national road network need an electronic vignette. From 1 August 2026 the car rates are €6.60 for a weekend, €10.00 for a week, €19.90 for a month and €64.50 for a year. A licensed operator's vehicles already carry one, and whenever a trip leaves the city for Borovets, Bansko, Rila or Plovdiv, the cost is inside your RYDES price rather than added at the end.

Bulgaria replaced the lev with the euro on 1 January 2026, at a fixed 1.95583 leva to one euro, and dual display in both currencies runs until 31 December 2026. A RYDES fare has only ever been quoted in euros, so nothing about a booking changes. VAT is included in the price, and the only cost outside the quote is paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges for it.

The taxi tariff is quoted as a range, with a higher band at night, so the same trip can cost noticeably different amounts depending on the company and the hour. A chauffeur fare does not move with the hour or the route chosen, and the full line-by-line comparison is on Sofia taxi alternative.

Realistic drive times.

Sofia is compact, but its main arteries carry almost everything, and a single set of roadworks or one crash on a main road changes the picture. These ranges are what to plan with.

Typical door-to-door driving times on common Sofia routes, for a direct private car.
RouteOff-peakWeekday rush or ski SaturdayWhat moves it
SOF to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral15 to 25 min30 to 50 minThe main airport road into town, slowest inbound in the morning

SOF to Borovets1 h 15 to 1 h 401 h 45 to 2 h 30Valley roads, then the mountain climb; snow and Saturday changeovers slow it
SOF to Bansko2 h 20 to 2 h 503 h to 3 h 45Motorway south, then mountain roads for the final section
SOF to Rila Monastery2 h 15 to 2 h 402 h 45 to 3 h 15Motorway south, then a valley road for the last stretch
SOF to Plovdiv1 h 40 to 2 h2 h to 2 h 40Motorway east across the Thracian plain

Snow changes the mountain times more than traffic does. On a snowy Saturday in January, the climb to Borovets can take as long as the whole Bansko run on a dry weekday, and the vehicle matters more than the route. For a flight home you cannot miss, add half the off-peak time again as a buffer between December and March.

Beyond the capital.

Day trips and cross-border runs are priced as one fixed fare for the whole journey, not by the hour, so a slow pass or a queue at a border is the operator's problem rather than yours.

ThessalonikiAbout 304 km4 h to 4 h 45Greece is in Schengen, so there are no routine border checks
BelgradeAbout 407 km5 h to 6 h, plus the borderSerbia is outside Schengen: passport control at the border

Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025, so the road into Greece has no routine checks, though every passenger should still carry a passport or ID card. Skopje and Belgrade are outside Schengen: expect passport control, and the run needs an operator licensed to carry passengers on that side, which dispatch confirms at booking rather than selling automatically. For the Greek end, see chauffeur service in Thessaloniki; for the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

When you should not book us.

Sofia's airport metro is cheap and quick, and for some trips nothing beats it.

Landing at Terminal 2 on your own with a carry-on, staying near Serdika or Sveta Nedelya, take the metro. Line M4 leaves from the terminal itself, reaches Serdika in 12 stops and about 20 minutes, runs from about 05:30 to midnight, and a single ticket costs €0.80. From Terminal 1, the free shuttle to Terminal 2 runs from 05:00 to 23:00 and connects with it. A metered taxi from the official rank is the other honest choice for a short hop: at Sofia's day rates of €0.73 to €1.24 per km, the 11 km to the cathedral comes to roughly €8 to €14 for distance.

A chauffeur is worth the money in other conditions: skis or more luggage than you can carry down stairs, three or more people, small children, a late arrival after the metro has stopped, a destination off the line such as Boyana or Lozenets, a day with several stops, or any trip to the mountains. That covers most of the reasons people book us, not every journey, and we would rather say so here. The full comparison is on Sofia taxi alternative.

Sofia questions.

Which terminal does my flight use at Sofia Airport?

Low-cost and charter flights, mainly Wizz Air and easyJet, use Terminal 1. Most other airlines use Terminal 2, and Ryanair is the only low-cost carrier there. Check your booking on the day, because assignments change between seasons. A free shuttle bus links the two terminals from 05:00 to 23:00. See Sofia Airport transfer.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at SOF?

At the meeting point your chauffeur names in a message sent before you land, which depends on your terminal. Standard pickup is free. Meet and greet, with the chauffeur waiting inside the arrivals hall holding your name, is a paid add-on. Terminal detail is on SOF airport transfer.

How long is the drive from Sofia Airport to the centre?

About 11 km to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, usually 15 to 25 minutes outside the rush and 30 to 50 minutes in it. Vitosha Boulevard and NDK, a little further south, take 18 to 28 minutes off-peak. See SOF to Sofia centre.

Should I take the metro instead?

Sometimes, and we say so openly. From Terminal 2, travelling light and staying near Serdika, metro line M4 takes about 20 minutes over 12 stops for €0.80 and runs from about 05:30 to midnight. There is no metro at Terminal 1. A chauffeur makes sense with luggage or skis, with more than two people, with children, late at night, or for a destination off the line. Details are on Sofia taxi alternative.

Is Uber available in Sofia?

No. Uber suspended UberX in Bulgaria in October 2015 and has not operated there since. Local apps such as TaxiMe, Yellow and OK Taxi dispatch licensed, metered taxis. A pre-booked car service in Sofia is the option with a price fixed before the ride.

Who is the official taxi company at Sofia Airport?

Since May 2023 the airport's official taxi operator has been the Yellow taxi company, Sofia's taxi tariffs from January 2026 run from €0.73 to €1.24 per km by day and €0.84 to €1.52 at night, depending on the company. A RYDES booking is separate: pre-booked, at a fixed price.

Are your Sofia chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every journey is carried out by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Bulgaria, under the country's Road Transport Act. RYDES arranges the booking and the licensed operator supplies the car and chauffeur. Licensing and insurance are checked before an operator can accept bookings.

Does Bulgaria use the euro now?

Yes. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, at a fixed rate of 1.95583 leva to one euro. Both currencies appear on price tags until 31 December 2026. RYDES quotes and charges in euros, so you pay in euros at booking, as before.

Are VAT, the vignette and airport charges included?

Yes. VAT is included in the price, and so is the e-vignette that cars need on the national road network, as well as any airport collection charge. The only cost outside the quote is paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges. The comparison is on taxi versus chauffeur in Sofia.

How long is the transfer from Sofia Airport to Bansko?

About 167 km, usually 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 50 minutes, and up to 3 hours 45 on a snowy ski Saturday. It is one fixed fare to your hotel or chalet. See SOF to Bansko and Bansko ski transfers.

How long is the transfer to Borovets?

About 69 km, normally 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 40 minutes, with the last part on a mountain road that slows a lot in snow. Allow up to 2 hours 30 on a changeover Saturday in bad weather. See SOF to Borovets and Borovets ski transfers.

When does the ski season run in Bansko and Borovets?

For 2026 to 2027, Bansko plans to open on 12 December 2026, with about 70 km of pistes, and Borovets on 26 December 2026, with 58 km. Both plan to close on 11 April 2027. Opening dates depend on snow, and transfer demand is heaviest on Saturdays, so book early. See Bansko and Borovets.

Can I visit Rila Monastery as a day trip from Sofia?

Yes. It is about 139 km from the airport, around 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 40 each way. Most people book it by the hour so the chauffeur waits while they visit, or as a fixed one-way fare. See Rila Monastery and Sofia to Rila.

Can you drive me to Thessaloniki, Skopje or Belgrade?

Yes, as fixed fares. Greece and Bulgaria are both in Schengen, so the Thessaloniki run has no routine border checks; allow about 4 hours to 4 hours 45. North Macedonia and Serbia are outside Schengen, so the Skopje and Belgrade runs include passport control, and dispatch confirms an operator licensed for that side at booking.

Can I hire a car and chauffeur for a day in Sofia?

Yes, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. The chauffeur waits between meetings, at NDK, at Inter Expo Center or in the centre. Paid parking at a stop is the only cost outside the quote. See hourly chauffeur in Sofia.

How far ahead should I book, and what if my flight is late?

Book at least 3 hours before pickup; reservations open up to a year ahead, and for ski Saturdays and Sofia Film Fest in March, earlier is better. Add your flight number and a delay moves the pickup at no cost, with the hour of free waiting starting at the actual landing. Remember Bulgaria is on EET, with clocks going back on 25 October 2026.
