What is a Florence chauffeur service?

A Florence chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed price and carried out by an NCC operator, noleggio con conducente, authorised by an Italian comune under Legge 21/1992, the national framework law for non-scheduled road passenger transport. An NCC car cannot be hailed in the street or taken from a taxi rank; every trip is booked ahead with the operator. That is exactly how a RYDES reservation works, whether it is a Florence airport transfer, an hourly car service in Florence or a black car to the Fortezza da Basso: RYDES arranges the booking and the licensed operator carries out the journey.

What changes in Florence is everything around the car. The historic centre is a camera-enforced ZTL, the autostrade to Bologna and Rome are tolled, the airport taxi charges for bags, and the countryside sits an hour or more away. A booked Florence car service absorbs all of it. The quoted price already holds the 10 percent IVA and any toll on the route, and dispatch checks whether the car can reach your address inside the ZTL before the day, not at the barrier.

The same reservation reaches well beyond the city walls. Pisa airport transfers for flights that do not come into Peretola, Florence airport to Chianti and Florence airport to Siena for guests going straight to the countryside, day trips to San Gimignano, Montalcino and Lucca, and summer runs to Forte dei Marmi on the coast. The Florence taxi alternative page compares the options, and corporate travel puts a team on one account.

The two airports that serve Florence.

Peretola is close and small, with one runway and one terminal. Pisa is an hour and a half away and has far more flights. Which one wins depends on the timetable more than the map.

Drive times are door to door and assume a direct private car, not a shared shuttle. Peak means roughly 07:30 to 09:30 and 17:00 to 19:30 on a weekday, plus the Pitti Uomo weeks around the Fortezza da Basso. The figures to the Duomo end at the nearest point a car may legally stop, which inside the ZTL depends on the vehicle's access, and never in Piazza del Duomo itself.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

Florence airport is compact enough that arrivals take minutes. Pisa is bigger and further away. Santa Maria Novella, where the fast trains stop, is the third arrival point that matters, and the trickiest one for a car.

Florence Peretola.

Florence airport handled 3.8 million passengers in 2025, up 9.4 percent, through a single terminal, so the walk from the aircraft to the exit is short and there is no terminal to choose. The airport has not published a fixed meeting area for pre-booked NCC cars, so your chauffeur names the exact point in the message sent before you land, and it stays the same however late the aircraft is.

A masterplan with a 2,200 m runway and a new terminal was approved in 2025 and is under legal challenge, with works scheduled to finish by the end of 2035, so nothing about arrivals changes for now. The drive itself is on Florence airport to the city centre.

  • Standard pickup, includedYour chauffeur waits at the point named in the pre-arrival message, a short walk from the arrivals exit.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits inside arrivals with your name, useful with children, heavy luggage or guests who have never been to Italy.
  • One terminalEvery flight uses the same building, so there is nothing to check on the day except the landing time.

Pisa.

Pisa airport carried just under 6.0 million passengers in 2025, up 7.8 percent, and offers far more routes than Peretola, which is why so many Florence trips start here. Your chauffeur confirms the meeting point in the message before landing. From the airport the drive to central Florence is about 85 km, usually an hour and a half off-peak. Full timings are on Pisa airport to Florence.

For anyone staying near the coast or in Lucca, Pisa is the nearer airport by a distance and the run is far shorter than going to Florence; see Pisa airport to Lucca. The PisaMover and train alternative is covered further down.

Santa Maria Novella.

Frecciarossa and Italo trains from Rome, Bologna and Milan arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, on the edge of the ZTL. A chauffeur collecting from a train meets you at a point outside the station that a car can legally reach, named in advance with the coach number you give in the booking notes.

Pickups and drop-offs in the centro storico depend on ZTL access rather than on distance. A licensed NCC car registered for ZTL access can reach most hotel doors inside sectors A, B and O; where it cannot, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. No car drives into Piazza del Duomo or the pedestrian streets around the Ponte Vecchio. Ask for centro storico pickups if your address is deep inside the old town.

Airport details above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Meeting points at both airports can move with works and seasons, so treat the message your chauffeur sends before you land as the authority on where to walk.

Tolls, IVA, the ZTL and the tourist tax.

Four things decide what a Florence journey costs and where it can go: the autostrada tolls, the 10 percent IVA on chauffeur transport, the limited traffic zone in the centre, and the city tax your hotel collects.

The motorway that matters most here is the A1, north over the Apennines to Bologna and south towards Rome. In 2026 the Bologna Casalecchio to Firenze Nord stretch costs €8.90 for a car, and Firenze Sud to Roma Nord costs €20.00. Whatever tolls the route uses are inside your RYDES price, as is the 10 percent IVA that applies to NCC passenger transport; nothing is added at the end.

The centro storico is a zona a traffico limitato. Sectors A, B and O are enforced by camera from 07:30 to 20:00 Monday to Friday and from 07:30 to 16:00 on Saturday, and a summer night ZTL runs from 23:00 to 03:00 Thursday to Saturday, roughly from April to early October. Licensed NCC cars registered for ZTL access can enter when their plate is on the city's list; for an operator licensed in another town, dispatch confirms access for your address before the day. The imposta di soggiorno is separate and is charged by the hotel, not the car: €8 per person per night at five stars, €7 at four, and €6 at three stars, B&Bs and short lets, for up to seven nights.

For one or two people heading to the centre, the Peretola taxi is a fair benchmark. Where a booked car pulls ahead is with more bags, with a hotel in the hills or a villa in Chianti, or with a fixed time that cannot slip. The full comparison is on Florence taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Distances around Florence are short and the roads are slow. The ring of viali around the old town, the Peretola junction and the single-carriageway roads into the hills all add time the kilometres do not show.

Free-flow figures for these roads are lower than the ranges above, and they are rarely what you get. A Pitti Uomo afternoon, the Firenze Marathon in November or the Easter morning crowds around the Duomo can each double the run into the centre. For a flight you cannot miss, add half the off-peak time again as a buffer.

Out into Tuscany.

Day trips and onward journeys are priced as one fixed fare for the whole distance, so a slow climb behind a tractor outside Castellina or a queue at Firenze Sud is the operator's cost, not yours.

What the Florence price contains.

One figure, agreed before the day. Nothing is metered and nothing appears afterwards.

IVA and tolls
The 10 percent IVA and any autostrada toll on the route, north to Bologna or south towards Rome on the A1, are counted in the euro price you see.
Airport charges
Any charge the airport makes on a pre-booked car at Peretola or Pisa is counted in the quote, never passed on later.
Tipping is up to you
The chauffeur's pay for the run was agreed before the job was accepted. A tip is offered once at payment and you can leave it or not.
Flight tracking
Add the flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft, early or late, without a charge for the change.

Sixty minutes of waiting free from the real landing time, at either airport. Other pickups include 15 minutes, after which waiting is billed in 15-minute steps and you are told first.
Standard pickup
Collection at the airport meeting point your chauffeur names is the default and costs nothing extra. Being met inside arrivals with your name is a paid add-on.
ZTL checked in advance
Dispatch confirms whether the car can reach your address in the restricted zone, or names the nearest permitted point, before the day.
Cancellation
Free up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full, because the car and chauffeur are already held for you.
Child seats and pets
Child seats are supplied on request as a paid add-on, and the parent fits them. Pets travel as a paid add-on; service animals are always free.
What is not included
Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait at a stop that charges for it, and the imposta di soggiorno, which your hotel collects.

When you should not book us.

For some Florence journeys the tram or the train is simply the better choice.

Landing at Peretola alone with a carry-on and staying near Santa Maria Novella, the T2 tram is hard to beat. It runs from the airport to Unità, beside the station, in 20 to 30 minutes, every 4 to 11 minutes from about 05:05 to midnight, later at weekends, for a €2.00 single ticket. From Pisa, the PisaMover reaches Pisa Centrale in about five minutes, and the fastest trains to Santa Maria Novella take 48 to 51 minutes, or 73 to 81 on a stopping service, for a €9.30 regional fare.

Between cities the train usually wins too. Florence to Rome takes about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 by Frecciarossa or Italo, from about €15 booked ahead, against three hours or more by road; Florence to Bologna is about 37 minutes, from about €9 to €10. A chauffeur earns its fare with more than two people, heavy luggage, small children, a hotel in Fiesole or the Oltrarno, a Chianti estate no train reaches, several stops, or an arrival after the last service. The side-by-side figures are on Florence taxi versus chauffeur.

Should I fly into Florence or Pisa?

It depends on your flight and where you are staying. Florence airport at Peretola is about 9 km from the Duomo, usually 20 to 30 minutes by car off-peak, and suits any address in the city or the hills. Pisa has far more routes and handled just under 6.0 million passengers in 2025, but it is about 85 km from Florence, usually an hour and a half by road. For Lucca or the coast, Pisa is the nearer airport. See Florence airport transfer and Pisa airport transfer.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Florence airport?

Florence airport has a single terminal, and your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land. Standard pickup there is included in the price. Meet and greet inside arrivals, with the chauffeur holding your name, is a paid add-on. Detail is on the Florence airport transfer page.

How long does it take from Florence airport to the city centre?

Around 20 to 30 minutes off-peak to the Duomo area and 30 to 50 minutes at weekday peak or during Pitti Uomo. Santa Maria Novella is the quickest, about 15 to 25 minutes, and Fiesole about 25 to 35. The final stretch depends on ZTL access to your street. See Florence airport to the city centre.

How much is a taxi from Florence airport?

The taxi from Peretola to central Florence charges a fixed fare of roughly €28 to €32 depending on the time of day, plus a small charge per bag. A RYDES price is fixed at booking, with no per-bag charge and the 10 percent IVA included; for one person with little luggage the taxi is a fair choice. The comparison is on Florence taxi alternative.

Can a chauffeur car enter the ZTL in Florence?

Licensed NCC cars registered for ZTL access can enter the restricted sectors A, B and O when their plate is on the city's list. Where the operator is licensed in another town, dispatch confirms access for your address before the day; if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. No car can drive into Piazza del Duomo or the pedestrian streets around the Ponte Vecchio.

Are tolls and IVA included in the price?

Yes. The 10 percent IVA that applies to NCC passenger transport and every autostrada toll on the route are inside the quoted euro price. In 2026, Bologna Casalecchio to Firenze Nord costs €8.90 and Firenze Sud to Roma Nord €20.00, and neither is added to your bill. Paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges, is the only cost outside the quote.

Is the Florence tourist tax included?

No. The imposta di soggiorno is collected by your hotel or rental, not by the car. Since 1 February 2025 it has been €8 per person per night at five-star hotels, €7 at four stars, and €6 at three stars, B&Bs and short lets, charged for up to seven nights.

Are your Florence chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every journey is carried out by an NCC operator, noleggio con conducente, authorised by a comune under Legge 21/1992 and keeping its base and garage, the rimessa, where the law requires. NCC trips must be booked in advance, which is how every RYDES booking works. The Corte costituzionale struck down the rule forcing a car back to its garage after each job in ruling 56/2020, and the 2024 decree's booking limits were annulled in 2025; the national RENT register for taxi and NCC is being rolled out.

Would I be better off on the T2 tram?

Sometimes, and we would rather say so. The T2 runs from Florence airport to Unità, beside Santa Maria Novella, in 20 to 30 minutes, every 4 to 11 minutes from about 05:05 to midnight, for a €2.00 ticket. Alone with a carry-on and staying near the station, it is the sensible choice. A car earns its price with luggage, a family, a hotel in the hills, or a late arrival.

How do I get from Pisa airport to Florence?

By train, take the PisaMover to Pisa Centrale, about five minutes, then a train to Santa Maria Novella, 48 to 51 minutes on the fastest services or 73 to 81 on a stopping train, for a €9.30 regional fare. By car it is about 85 km, usually 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 off-peak, door to door at a fixed price. See Pisa airport to Florence.

Can you take us on a Chianti wine tour?

Yes. Greve in Chianti is about 29 km from Florence, around 35 to 60 minutes by car, and Castellina and Radda are about 48 km and an hour. A tasting day suits hourly hire, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments, and the car waits at each estate. Give us the estate names so dispatch can plan the route. See Chianti wine tours.

Can we see Siena and San Gimignano in one day?

Yes, and it is one of the most booked days out of Florence. Siena is about 75 km, around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 40 by car, and San Gimignano about 60 km, so the two fit one loop with time in each. Neither centre can be driven through, so the chauffeur drops you at the nearest permitted point. See Siena and San Gimignano and Florence to Siena.

How far is Val d'Orcia from Florence?

Montepulciano is about 112 km and Pienza about 116 km, each roughly 1 hour 35 to 2 hours by car. Montalcino is about 120 to 140 km depending on the route, about 2 hours. It is a long day, so most people book it by the hour and take the loop through the valley. See Val d’Orcia and Florence to Montalcino.

Should I take the train or a car from Florence to Rome?

For most travellers the train. Frecciarossa and Italo take about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30, from about €15 booked ahead, against roughly three hours or more by road. A car makes sense for a group with luggage, a door-to-door run to a villa, or a stop on the way, with the €20.00 toll from Firenze Sud included. See Florence to Rome.

How far ahead should I book in Florence?

At least 3 hours before pickup, so the operator can assign and brief a chauffeur, and reservations open up to a year ahead. For Pitti Uomo on 12 to 15 January and 15 to 18 June 2027, Easter, MotoGP weekend at Mugello and the summer, book as early as you can. See Pitti Uomo transfers and corporate accounts.

What happens if my flight is delayed or diverted?

Add the flight number and the pickup follows the aircraft, with the free hour of waiting starting at the real landing time. A delay costs nothing. If a flight bound for Peretola is diverted to Pisa or elsewhere, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur to the new airport and confirms the change with you.
