However Malta moves.

An island about the size of a large city, with one airport, one great harbour and two ferries to Gozo. The cars and the fixed pricing stay the same; the dispatch changes with the day.

What is a Valletta chauffeur service?

A Valletta chauffeur service is private transport booked in advance at a fixed euro price, carried out by an operator holding a Transport Malta operator licence, with a driver who holds a Transport Malta driver tag. It is not a street hail and it is not the white-taxi queue. The car, the chauffeur and the total are agreed before you travel, whether the booking is a Malta airport transfer, an hourly car service around the island or a black car to a meeting in Valletta.

Where it differs from the alternatives is on the bad days. An app price moves with demand when a cruise ship and three flights land in the same hour, and the airport taxi booth sells a ticket for the next white taxi rather than the vehicle your group needs. A reserved Malta car service booking does neither. The quote already contains VAT and, if your drop-off is inside Valletta during charging hours, the city’s vehicle access charge. The full comparison sits on Malta taxi versus chauffeur.

One booking covers both islands. Cruise port transfers from the Valletta Waterfront, runs to St Julian’s and Paceville, the airport to Mellieħa for the northern beaches, a day in Mdina and Rabat, and the drive to Ċirkewwa for the Gozo ferry. For companies flying staff in every month, corporate travel in Malta adds central billing and traveller profiles on the same licensed fleet.

How you arrive in Malta.

One airport handles every flight to the islands. The other arrivals that need a car are the cruise ships in the Grand Harbour and the ferries that link Malta with Gozo.

Arrival points served from the Valletta hub, with approximate road distance and typical driving time to or from Valletta.

Times are door to door for a direct private car, not a bus or a shared shuttle. Peak covers weekday mornings and late afternoons, and also summer evenings on the coast road through Sliema and St Julian’s, which can be as slow as any rush hour. Malta’s roads are short but notoriously congested, so the peak column is wide on purpose.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

The airport is small and easy to walk. Valletta is the hard part: much of the old city is pedestrian, and cars can only reach certain points.

Malta International Airport.

MLA has a single terminal. After baggage reclaim and customs you come out into the Welcomers’ Hall, where people wait for arriving passengers and where the white-taxi booth sells pre-paid tickets at fixed rates. A RYDES chauffeur is not part of that queue. Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, so you walk straight to the car instead of buying a ticket.

The airport passed 10 million passengers for the first time in 2025, up 12.3 percent on the year before, and is aiming for 10.5 million in 2026. The arrivals area is busiest when several flights land together in the summer afternoon wave. Timing for the drive into the capital is on MLA to Valletta.

Inside Valletta.

Valletta sits on a narrow peninsula behind its bastions, and much of the core is pedestrian. Cars enter under the Controlled Vehicular Access system, which charges from 08:00 to 14:00 Monday to Friday. The first 30 minutes are free, then it costs €0.82 an hour up to a daily cap of €6.52. After 14:00, at weekends and on public holidays there is no charge.

Any access charge for your drop-off or pickup is already inside a RYDES price. Your chauffeur takes you to the nearest permitted point, which is usually the City Gate area or the vehicle access your hotel uses. If you are staying on a stepped street with no car access, say so in the booking notes and the operator will plan the last few metres with you.

Valletta · 900 × 600

The Gozo ferries.

There are two ways across. The Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes and carries cars; a foot passenger pays €4.65 return and a car with its driver €15.70 return, both paid on the way back from Gozo. The fast ferry from Valletta takes about 45 minutes and costs about €7.50 one way for foot passengers. A chauffeur can take you to either terminal; see Gozo ferry transfers.

A pickup on Gozo itself is arranged with an operator based on Gozo, and whether one is available for your time is confirmed at booking rather than promised here. If it matters, book the Gozo side when you book the Malta side, so both cars are confirmed together.

Terminal and ferry details were checked in October 2026. Ferry fares and timetables change by season, so check the operator’s schedule on the day, and treat your chauffeur’s message as the authority on where to meet.

Access charges, taxes and the taxi booth.

Malta has no motorway tolls. What changes a fare here is Valletta’s access charge, VAT, and the fixed-rate ticket system at the airport, and each reaches you in a different way.

The Controlled Vehicular Access charge is the only road charge most visitors meet, and only inside Valletta on weekday mornings and lunchtimes. On a white taxi or an app car it depends on the ride; on a RYDES booking it is simply part of the quote. VAT is included in the price, so the figure you see at booking is the figure you pay.

The white taxis at the airport work from a booth in the Welcomers’ Hall with fixed rates by area, and an admin fee on top. Private hire cars, the Y-plates, are run by operators licensed by Transport Malta, and the authority has been tightening the rules: about 5,206 cabs were licensed by September 2025, 69 operators were suspended in January 2025 over garage requirements, most continuing pending appeal, and from 30 July 2026 drivers may drive no more than 12 hours a day, with working-hour data readable from the apps. A RYDES trip is carried out by a Transport Malta-licensed operator with a tagged driver.

Separate from transport, Malta’s tourist eco-contribution rose to €1.50 per person per night on 1 July 2026, capped at €22.50 per stay. It is charged by your hotel or rental, not by any driver, and it is not part of a transfer price. The side-by-side cost comparison for common runs is on Malta taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

On a map nothing in Malta is far. On the road, Malta’s traffic is notoriously heavy, and a 13 km trip can take the best part of an hour. These ranges are honest rather than optimistic.

For a ferry or a flight you cannot miss, plan to the right-hand column, not the left. Road works, a breakdown on the Regional Road or a busy event in Floriana can stretch any of these, and July and August evenings on the coast are a category of their own. Your chauffeur picks the route; the price does not change if the road does.

Across the island.

Place-to-place runs inside Malta are priced as one fixed fare per journey, never by the minute, so a jam at Msida is the operator’s problem rather than yours.

When you should not book us.

Valletta is close to the airport and Malta’s public options are cheap, so for some trips a chauffeur is the wrong answer.

One or two people with light bags, going to Valletta: take the bus or a white taxi. The Airport Direct TD4 runs to Valletta and the Gozo fast ferry every 30 minutes for €3. The TD2 and TD3 go to St Julian’s, Pembroke and Sliema every 30 minutes, and the hourly TD1 serves Rabat, Buġibba, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa for €3.50. A white taxi from the booth to Valletta is about €17, to Sliema or St Julian’s about €20, plus an admin fee.

A chauffeur is worth the difference when the bus is not: a family with car seats and checked bags, more than two or three people, an arrival after midnight, a cruise turnaround with a flight to catch, a ferry connection to Gozo, a wedding or a day with several stops. That is most of why people book us in Malta, but not every journey, and it is better said here than discovered later. The side-by-side numbers are on Malta taxi versus chauffeur.

How do I get from Malta airport to Valletta?

By car it is about 10 km, usually 15 to 25 minutes off-peak and 30 to 50 minutes in heavy traffic. The cheapest option is the Airport Direct TD4 bus, every 30 minutes for €3, and a white taxi from the booth is about €17 plus an admin fee. A RYDES car is a fixed price agreed at booking. See MLA to Valletta.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Malta International Airport?

Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in a message sent before you land, and that standard pickup is free. If you would rather be met inside the Welcomers’ Hall with a name board, add meet and greet as a paid extra. You do not need to queue at the white-taxi booth. Details are on the Malta airport transfer page.

Are your Malta chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every trip is carried out by a Transport Malta-licensed operator with a tagged driver. Drivers earn the Transport Malta tag after a driver course, a customer-care course, a clean record check and a medical, and drivers from outside the EU also need a residence permit and an employment licence for the work. Licensing is checked before an operator can take bookings.

What is the difference between a white taxi and a chauffeur in Malta?

White taxis are Malta’s separate licensed taxi service, sold at the airport as pre-paid tickets at fixed rates by area, plus an admin fee. You take the next taxi in line. A chauffeur booking fixes the vehicle class, the meeting point and the total price in advance, with flight tracking and free waiting. See Malta taxi versus chauffeur.

Do I pay the Valletta access charge?

Not on a RYDES booking. Valletta’s Controlled Vehicular Access charge applies from 08:00 to 14:00 on weekdays, with the first 30 minutes free and then €0.82 an hour up to €6.52, and it is free after 14:00, at weekends and on holidays. Any charge for your drop-off or pickup is inside the quoted price.

Can the car drive right up to my Valletta hotel?

Often not to the door. Much of Valletta’s centre is pedestrian, so your chauffeur stops at the nearest permitted point, usually around City Gate or the vehicle access your hotel uses. If your street has steps or no car access, mention it in the booking notes and the operator will plan the drop-off with you.

Is VAT included?

Yes. VAT is included in the price, together with any Valletta access charge and any airport or port charge on the pickup. The only things outside the quote are paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges, ferry tickets, and an optional tip. See Malta car service.

How long does it take from MLA to St Julian’s or Sliema?

Usually 20 to 35 minutes off-peak and 40 to 65 minutes at peak to St Julian’s and Paceville, and a similar 20 to 30 or 35 to 60 minutes to Sliema. Summer evenings on the coast road are often as slow as a weekday rush. See MLA to St Julian’s and MLA to Sliema.

Can you take me to the Gozo ferry?

Yes. The drive from the airport to Ċirkewwa is about 31 km and takes 45 to 60 minutes off-peak, longer at busy times, and the Gozo Channel ferry to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes, €4.65 return on foot or €15.70 return for a car and driver, paid on the way back. The fast ferry from Valletta takes about 45 minutes. See Gozo ferry transfers.

Can I be picked up on Gozo?

Possibly. A pickup on Gozo is arranged with an operator based on the island, and availability for your time is confirmed at booking rather than guaranteed. The simplest plan is to book the Malta leg to the ferry and the Gozo leg at the same time, so both are confirmed together. See Valletta to Ċirkewwa.

Do you collect from Valletta Cruise Port?

Yes. Cruise passengers are met at the Valletta Waterfront, and the most requested runs are to the airport, about 9 km and 15 to 45 minutes, to Mdina and to St Julian’s. Give us the ship’s name and the operator times the pickup around disembarkation. See Valletta cruise port transfers.

Would the bus be a better choice?

For some trips, yes. Alone or as a couple with light bags, going to Valletta, the TD4 bus every 30 minutes for €3 is hard to beat, and the TD2 and TD3 serve St Julian’s and Sliema at the same price. A chauffeur makes sense with children, heavy luggage, a group, a late arrival, a ferry or flight connection, or a day of several stops.

How much waiting time do I get?

At MLA you get 60 minutes of free waiting counted from the actual landing time, tracked against the aircraft. At hotels, the cruise port and other pickups the free window is 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you are told before it starts.

Can I hire a car and driver by the hour in Malta?

Yes. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum and runs in 30-minute increments after that. It suits a day in Mdina and the Three Cities, a wedding, or a series of meetings, with the car waiting between stops. See hourly chauffeur in Malta and wedding transportation.

How far ahead should I book in Malta?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and up to a year in advance. Book early for the Rolex Middle Sea Race start on 17 October 2026, the Valletta Baroque Festival from 7 to 24 January 2027, Malta Carnival from 5 to 9 February 2027, and the Malta Marathon on Sunday 28 February 2027, which runs from Mdina to Sliema and closes roads on the way. Regular travellers should look at corporate travel in Malta.

Do I pay the eco-contribution to the driver?

No. Malta’s tourist eco-contribution, €1.50 per person per night since 1 July 2026 and capped at €22.50 per stay, is collected by your hotel or rental. It has nothing to do with the transfer and is not in a RYDES price.

What side of the road does Malta drive on?

The left, as in the United Kingdom. Malta is on Central European Time, and the clocks go back to winter time on 25 October 2026, which is worth checking against an early-morning flight or ferry that weekend.
