Heraklion port transfers

What is a Heraklion chauffeur service?

A Heraklion chauffeur service is private transport on Crete booked in advance at an agreed euro price and carried out by a licensed chauffeur operator in an EIX car, the Greek private-use passenger vehicle with driver. Under Law 5290/2026 an EIX can only be hired through a written contract that is entered in the Ministry's digital register before the trip begins, naming the pickup point and the start and end times. That makes it different in kind from a taxi: no rank, no street hail, and no meter. It covers a Heraklion airport transfer, an hourly car service around Heraklion and a car service in Heraklion for any address on the island.

Because the contract is a timed hire, Crete applies a legal minimum. From 1 April to 31 October an EIX booking runs for at least 2 hours with a minimum fare of €82, and from November to March the floor is 3 hours. A Greek chauffeur transfer is legally a timed hire, so even a short airport run is priced as at least the legal minimum. On a 10-minute hop into town that makes a taxi alternative look expensive; on the hour-long run to Elounda the gap with a metered cab mostly disappears, and you get a fixed private transfer instead of a meter on a busy coast road.

The same booking reaches the rest of the island: HER to Hersonissos and Malia on the north coast, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda on Mirabello Bay, the west via Rethymno and Chania, and the ruins at Knossos. Families with luggage and parties of eight or more use group transportation, and wedding planners book the wedding car service for guests spread across several resorts.

The airports that serve Crete.

One busy airport handles almost everyone heading to Heraklion and the east. A second suits the far west, and a third is still under construction.

Drive times are door to door for a direct private car, not a shared coach. The second column is July and August, when the coast road around Hersonissos and the approaches to the airport fill with hire cars and coaches; summer afternoons near Hersonissos add 10 to 15 minutes on their own. 15 August, the Assumption feast, is the heaviest traffic day of the year and should be planned as a category of its own.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

Heraklion is one compact terminal, which keeps the walk short. What makes it hard is the volume of people moving through it in summer.

Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis.

Heraklion airport carried 10,033,151 passengers in 2025, its first year past 10 million, almost all of them through one compact terminal about 5 km east of the city centre. The traffic is lopsided: about 1.79 million passengers in August 2025 against roughly 126,000 in February, about fourteen times as many. In high summer the airport runs at the limit of its capacity, and the non-Schengen passport queue can take 45 to 60 minutes in August. That is why the 60 free minutes start at touchdown rather than at the scheduled time.

The airport does not publish a dedicated pre-booked car area, so we do not pretend there is one. Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, along with their name, photo and the car's registration. The airport is east of the city, so the drive to Hersonissos or Elounda heads east without crossing the centre.

  • Standard pickup, the free defaultThe chauffeur waits at the meeting point given in the pre-arrival message and walks you to the car.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onWaiting inside arrivals with your name, which helps when the hall is crowded on a July Saturday.
  • Passport queueArriving from outside the Schengen area in August, allow 45 to 60 minutes for passport control before the bags.

Heraklion port.

Heraklion port sits just below the old town, between the Venetian harbour and the airport. Overnight ferries from Piraeus sail overnight and take about 7.5 to 10.5 hours; fast boats from Santorini cross in about 1 hour 35 at best, with around 30 crossings a week in summer. In 2025 the port handled 536,543 cruise passengers on 281 calls.

Ferry and cruise pickups follow the standard 15 minutes of free waiting, so book for the scheduled arrival and allow time to walk off with luggage. Your chauffeur confirms where on the quay to meet. Coming from or going to the Cyclades, see Santorini chauffeur service; for the Piraeus end of the overnight boat, see Athens chauffeur service.

Kastelli, the airport to come.

A new airport is being built inland at Kastelli, about two-thirds complete in January 2026, with an official opening target of November 2028, moved back from 2027. When it opens it will replace HER entirely and sit about 25 minutes' drive from Heraklion.

Nothing changes for a booking made today: every flight still lands at Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis. When Kastelli opens, the pickup detail for Heraklion airport transfers will move with it.

Terminal and port facts above come from public sources checked in October 2026. Airlines, ferry operators and berths change from season to season, so treat the pre-arrival message from your chauffeur as the final word on where to walk.

Minimum hire, VAT and the island fees.

There are no tolls on today's routes in Crete and no congestion charge in Heraklion. What shapes a fare here is the legal minimum on every EIX booking, the VAT rate, and a couple of fees that reach you through your hotel or cruise line rather than through the car.

The minimum is the one to understand first. Between 1 April and 31 October an EIX contract on Crete must cover at least 2 hours and cost at least €82, and from 1 November to 31 March the minimum is 3 hours. The contract has to be registered at least 30 minutes before pickup, and the car cannot be hired to anyone else while it runs. Our 3-hour advance booking clears that with room to spare, and the operator files the contract, not you. 13 percent VAT is inside every RYDES price.

The northern road, the BOAK, is being rebuilt. The Chania to Heraklion section has been under a 35-year concession since February 2026 and will carry tolls once the new road is built, but none apply yet, so there are no tolls on today's routes. The climate resilience fee is collected by your accommodation per room per night: from April to October €2 at one- and two-star hotels, €5 at three-star, €10 at four-star and €15 at five-star hotels and villas, and €8 or €15 for short-term rentals depending on size, lower from November to March. Cruise passengers pay a €5 port fee in peak months at Heraklion. Neither fee is part of a car fare.

Against the €82 summer floor, a pre-booked car is hard to justify into town and easy to justify to Mirabello Bay. The full comparison is on Heraklion taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Crete's distances look small on a map. In July and August the coast road east of the airport carries hire cars, coaches and delivery vans at once, and the second column is the one to plan around.

Typical door-to-door driving times from Heraklion airport and city, for a direct private car. The second column is high summer.

The northern road has a poor safety record, with more than 110 deaths in a decade. That is an honest argument for a professional driver who knows it, rather than a hire car after a night flight. On 15 August and on village festival nights in July, add time beyond the second column.

Further across the island.

Longer runs are priced as one fare to the address, agreed before you book. On Crete they are still a timed hire in law, and the quote already reflects the time the car is committed.

Chania airport (CHQ), with 4.13 million passengers in 2025, only makes sense for western Crete; for anything from Rethymno eastwards HER is closer. Crossing to the islands by ferry is outside a car booking, but the car can meet the boat: see Santorini for the Cyclades end and Athens for Piraeus.

When you should not book us.

The legal minimum makes short trips on Crete expensive in a chauffeur car, and we would rather say so than sell them.

Going from the airport to a hotel in Heraklion itself, city bus line 1 runs from the terminal to Eleftherias Square for about €1.50 in 20 to 30 minutes, and a taxi into the centre is indicatively €15 to €20 against our €82 summer floor. Heading to Agios Nikolaos alone on a budget, the KTEL coach costs €7.70 and takes about 90 minutes, though it leaves from the central bus station rather than the airport, so you need the city bus or a taxi first. For Hersonissos, an indicative taxi at €35 to €45 is also cheaper, if you are happy to wait 20 to 40 minutes at the summer rank.

A pre-booked car makes sense the further east you go. To Agios Nikolaos and Elounda an indicative taxi runs €80 to €115, close to or above the minimum, and a chauffeur adds a fixed price, a car booked to your flight, room for the whole family's luggage and no rank queue after a long passport line. It also suits late arrivals, groups, a day with several stops, and anyone who would rather not drive the northern road after a night flight. The side-by-side numbers are on Heraklion taxi versus chauffeur.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How much is a chauffeur from Heraklion airport?

Every EIX booking on Crete is at least the legal minimum: from 1 April to 31 October a hire of at least 2 hours with a minimum fare of €82, and from 1 November to 31 March at least 3 hours. Longer runs such as Elounda or Chania are quoted as one fixed euro price before you book, with 13 percent VAT included. See Heraklion airport transfers.

Why is a 10-minute ride priced like a 2-hour hire?

Because the law treats it as one. A Greek chauffeur transfer is legally a timed hire, so even a short airport run is priced as at least the legal minimum. On Crete that is 2 hours and €82 in season. For a hop into the city centre a taxi or bus line 1 is cheaper, and we say so.

What is an EIX car?

EIX stands for a private-use passenger car with driver, the Greek limousine licence. Since Law 5290/2026, an EIX can only be hired by pre-booking: a written contract, entered in the Ministry's digital register before the trip, with the pickup point and start and end times. Police check the driver, vehicle and contract, and carrying passengers without a registered contract is fined €6,000, or €10,000 for a repeat.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Heraklion airport?

The airport does not publish a dedicated meeting area for pre-booked cars, so your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, with their name, photo and the car's registration. Meet and greet inside arrivals with your name is a paid add-on. Details are on Heraklion airport transfer.

How long is the passport queue at Heraklion in summer?

Arriving from outside the Schengen area in August, passport control can take 45 to 60 minutes. Heraklion runs at the limit of its capacity in high summer, with about 1.79 million passengers in August 2025. Free waiting starts at actual landing and lasts 60 minutes, so the queue usually fits inside it.

How long does it take from HER to Elounda?

About 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 25 outside high summer, and 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 50 in July and August, for about 65 km. The last stretch is a winding coast road above Mirabello Bay. See HER to Elounda and Elounda chauffeur service.

How long does it take from HER to Hersonissos?

About 25 to 35 minutes off-peak and 40 to 55 minutes in July and August, for about 23 km. Summer afternoons around Hersonissos add 10 to 15 minutes on their own. See HER to Hersonissos.

How long does it take from HER to Agios Nikolaos?

About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 off-peak, and up to about 1 hour 35 in high summer, for about 60 km. Indicative taxi fares for the same run are €80 to €100, so the legal minimum is close to a cab. See HER to Agios Nikolaos and Agios Nikolaos chauffeur service.

Are tolls and VAT included?

Yes. 13 percent VAT is inside every RYDES price, along with any airport charge. There are no tolls on today's routes in Crete. The Chania to Heraklion section of the northern road is under a concession from February 2026 and will be tolled when the new road is built; if a toll applies on your route by then, it will be in the quote. See Heraklion taxi versus chauffeur.

What is the climate resilience fee?

A charge collected by your accommodation per room per night, not by the car. From April to October it is €2 at one- and two-star hotels, €5 at three-star, €10 at four-star and €15 at five-star hotels and villas, with €8 or €15 for short-term rentals depending on size; it is lower from November to March. Cruise passengers pay a separate €5 fee at Heraklion in peak months.

Should I take the bus or a taxi instead?

For some trips, yes. City bus line 1 runs from the airport to Eleftherias Square for about €1.50 in 20 to 30 minutes, and an indicative taxi to the centre is €15 to €20. The KTEL coach to Agios Nikolaos costs €7.70 and takes about 90 minutes, from the central bus station. A chauffeur earns its price on the longer runs east, with luggage, children or a group, or late at night when indicative taxi fares rise about 25 to 30 percent.

Can you meet me at Heraklion port?

Yes. Overnight ferries from Piraeus arrive after about 7.5 to 10.5 hours, fast boats from Santorini take about 1 hour 35 at best, and cruise ships call through the season. Free waiting at the port is 15 minutes, so book for the scheduled arrival. See Heraklion port transfers.

Can I visit Knossos with a chauffeur?

Yes. Knossos is about 7.5 km from the airport and closer still to the port and the city. Booked by the hour, the chauffeur waits while you visit, which suits a cruise day or a morning before check-in. Arriving early avoids the tour coaches. See Knossos chauffeur service and Heraklion to Knossos.

Should I fly into Chania instead?

Only for western Crete. Chania airport handled 4.13 million passengers in 2025 and sits about 150 km from Heraklion by road, so for anywhere from Rethymno eastwards HER is far closer. For a trip between the two cities see Chania to Heraklion.

When does the new Kastelli airport open?

The official target is November 2028, moved back from 2027, and the airport was about two-thirds built in January 2026. When it opens it will replace Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis and sit about 25 minutes' drive from the city. Until then, every flight lands at HER.

How far in advance should I book in Crete?

At least 3 hours before pickup, which also clears the legal requirement to register the contract 30 minutes ahead. Reservations open up to a year out. For July and August, the 15 August holiday and wedding weekends, book as early as possible. For guests at several resorts, see wedding transportation and group transportation.

What happens if my flight to Heraklion is delayed?

Add the flight number and the pickup moves with the aircraft automatically, at no cost, with the 60 free minutes counted from actual landing. Beyond that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments and you are told before it starts. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933. Greece is on EET, and clocks go back on 25 October 2026.
