However eastern Sicily moves.

Most people land at Fontanarossa and leave the city within the hour. The booking changes shape with the plan, not the price logic.

Catania black car service

What is a Catania chauffeur service?

A Catania chauffeur service is a private car with a professional driver, booked in advance at a fixed price and carried out by an NCC operator (noleggio con conducente) licensed by a Sicilian comune under Legge 21/1992, the national law for non-scheduled road passenger transport. It is not a taxi and cannot be stopped in the street. Whether the job is a Catania airport transfer, an hourly car service around Etna or a black car to a dinner in Ortigia, the vehicle, the chauffeur and the total are agreed before the day.

That matters more here than in most Italian cities because the drives are long. Almost nobody stays in Catania itself: the typical booking is the 70 km to Taormina, the 64 km to Siracusa and Ortigia or the 87 km to Noto, and a taxi run that far is priced on the comune's tariff rather than a number you know in advance. A reserved car service in Catania quotes the full door-to-door fare, with 10 percent IVA and any motorway toll inside it, which is why travellers use it as a taxi alternative for anything beyond the city centre.

The same booking reaches the rest of the island. Catania to Palermo and Cefalù across the interior, Agrigento for the Valley of the Temples, Messina for the Strait ferry, and private transfers between hotels when a trip moves from the coast to the baroque towns. For companies bringing teams to Sicily for incentives or events, one account covers weddings, groups and corporate travel on the same fleet, and every route from the airport has its own page with timings.

The airport, and where flights go when Etna closes it.

Eastern Sicily has one airport that matters. The others in this table only enter the picture when the volcano puts ash into the approach path.

Drive times assume a direct private vehicle from the airport kerb. Peak here means summer weekends, Friday afternoons out of the city and the morning and evening commute on the Catania ring road. When Fontanarossa is closed, the chauffeur re-times to the airport your flight actually lands at; a Palermo or Trapani collection becomes a new, longer trip, and it is quoted again before anyone sets off. Palermo has its own page at Palermo chauffeur service.

Where your chauffeur actually meets you.

Fontanarossa is a single, busy terminal. The harder questions in eastern Sicily are what happens on an ash day and where a car can stop in Taormina.

Catania Fontanarossa.

Catania Fontanarossa carried 12,362,395 passengers in 2025, which makes it the fifth-busiest airport in Italy and by far the busiest in Sicily. Arrivals are concentrated in summer and around midday, so expect a crowded hall, a long taxi queue and a car park that fills quickly. Your chauffeur does not join any of that: the car is pre-booked, so it waits for you rather than for a place in a line.

The exact meeting point for pre-booked NCC cars is not published as a fixed spot, so your chauffeur names it, with their mobile number, in the message sent before you land. The standard collection is outside arrivals and is free. Being met inside the hall with a name board is a paid add-on and is worth it with children, a lot of luggage or a first visit. Timing for the run into town is on Catania airport to the centre.

  • Kerbside, the free defaultYour chauffeur gives you the exact meeting point and walks you to the car once you are through baggage reclaim.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onWaiting inside the arrivals hall with your name, then carrying on to the car together.
  • DeparturesThe car drops you at the departures kerb. Allow extra time in July and August, when security queues run long.

When Etna closes the airport.

Etna is an active volcano a few kilometres north of the runway, and when an eruption pushes ash over the airport, flights stop. This is not rare. On 12 February 2025 an eruption caused diversions. On 5 and 6 July 2026 arrivals were first capped and then every flight suspended until 14:00 on the 6th. From 6 to 14 August 2026 flights were suspended for days, with hundreds cancelled or diverted, and from 26 to 28 September 2026 the airport shut for three days, with flights sent to Palermo, Trapani and Comiso and extra trains laid on between Catania and Palermo.

With the flight number on the booking, RYDES tracks where the aircraft actually goes. If it lands at Palermo, about 2 hours 40 by road, or at Comiso instead, dispatch contacts you and re-times the collection. A transfer that much longer is not the trip you booked, so it is quoted as a new journey at the new distance, and you agree it before the car leaves.

Taormina and the ZTL.

Taormina keeps a permanent, camera-enforced ZTL over its historic centre, and Corso Umberto is largely pedestrian. Hotels inside the zone register their guests' number plates with the comune, and an unauthorised car is fined between €83 and €332, which is one of the better reasons not to hire a car for a Taormina stay.

NCC access to the zone is not something we can promise in advance. Dispatch confirms ZTL access for your address; if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point, and the chauffeur helps with luggage from there. Timings are on Catania airport to Taormina.

Terminal and ZTL detail above was checked against public sources in October 2026. Airport layouts and ZTL permits change, so treat your chauffeur's message, sent before pickup, as the authority on where to walk and where the car can stop.

IVA, tolls, the ZTL and the tourist tax.

There is no congestion charge in Catania. What changes a fare in eastern Sicily is the national tax rate, the occasional motorway toll and the restricted zones around the old centres, and each one reaches you differently depending on how you travel.

Passenger transport by NCC in Italy carries the reduced 10 percent IVA, and that 10 percent IVA is inside every RYDES price. Taxi fares in town are VAT-exempt and are set by the comune. Where a route uses a tolled stretch of motorway, the toll is paid by the operator and counted in the quote; Italian tolls rose about 1.5 percent on average in 2026, and that is the operator's problem rather than yours. Paid parking is the one thing outside the price, when you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges.

Two other costs are worth knowing about, though neither is part of a fare. Historic centres, Taormina's above all, are ZTL zones watched by cameras, and a hire car that strays in collects a fine weeks later. And Catania and Taormina charge a per-night tourist tax, collected by your hotel at checkout. A full comparison of a metered taxi against a fixed fare is on Catania taxi versus chauffeur.

For a hotel by the Duomo, the trial taxi fare is a fair benchmark and we say so plainly. The comparison changes as soon as the destination is Taormina, Ortigia or a masseria in the countryside, where the taxi has no fixed number and a private transfer does.

How long it really takes.

The motorways out of Catania are good and mostly quiet. What stretches a drive is the ring road at commuter hours, summer weekends on the coast and the last slow kilometres up to a hill town.

Sant'Agata changes Catania more than traffic does. From 3 to 5 February the city celebrates its patron saint, and on the procession days of 4 and 5 February the centre closes to cars; a hotel pickup by the Duomo then moves to the edge of the closure. In summer, add a buffer for a departure you cannot miss, especially on a Saturday afternoon from Taormina.

Leaving Catania.

Cross-island runs are priced as one fare for the whole journey, not by the hour, so a slow motorway works zone in the interior is the operator's cost, not yours.

Distances are from Fontanarossa and change a little with the exact address. A day out to Etna, Noto or Ragusa with waiting is usually better booked by the hour than as two transfers; see Etna tours and the Val di Noto. Ferry tickets across the Strait of Messina are not part of a RYDES fare.

When you should not book us.

For one particular trip, Catania now has a cheap, honest answer that is not a chauffeur.

If you are alone or a couple with carry-on bags, staying near Piazza Duomo or Stazione Centrale, take a taxi. A flat €27 fare to the centre runs as a trial to the end of 2026, which is hard to beat for 9 km. On a tight budget, a city bus also runs from the terminal to the centre. A metro extension to the airport is planned, but it will not open before 2030, so for now those are the two public options.

A chauffeur makes sense for most of what people actually come for: Taormina, Ortigia, Noto and the Val di Noto, where there is no fixed taxi fare and the city bus does not go; an Etna day; a family with real luggage; a late flight; or an ash-day diversion that needs someone watching the flight for you. During the September 2026 closure, extra trains ran between Catania and Palermo, and for a solo traveller that can still be the right call. The full cost comparison is on Catania taxi versus chauffeur.

Catania questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How do I get from Catania airport to Taormina?

By road it is about 70 km, usually 55 to 70 minutes off-peak and up to 1 hour 40 on a summer weekend. A RYDES transfer is priced as one fixed fare to your hotel, with 10 percent IVA and any toll included. Taormina's centre is a camera-enforced ZTL, so dispatch confirms access for your address; if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. See Catania airport to Taormina.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Catania airport?

Fontanarossa does not publish a single fixed meeting point for pre-booked NCC cars, so your chauffeur names the exact spot, with a mobile number, in the message sent before you land. Kerbside collection outside arrivals is free; being met inside the hall with a name board is a paid add-on. See Catania airport transfers.

What happens if Etna closes Catania airport?

Flights are suspended or diverted, often to Palermo, Trapani or Comiso, as happened from 26 to 28 September 2026. With your flight number on the booking, RYDES tracks where the aircraft lands and dispatch re-times the pickup. A transfer from Palermo, about 2 hours 40 by road, or from Comiso is a different trip, so it is quoted as a new journey at the new distance before the car sets off. See Catania to Palermo.

How often does Etna ash disrupt flights?

Often enough to plan for. An eruption on 12 February 2025 caused diversions; on 5 and 6 July 2026 flights were capped and then suspended until 14:00; from 6 to 14 August 2026 flights were suspended for days; and from 26 to 28 September 2026 the airport closed for three days. A closure can last hours or days, and the airline decides where your flight goes.

Is a taxi cheaper from Catania airport to the city centre?

For a short ride into town, often yes. A flat €27 taxi fare to Piazza Duomo or Stazione Centrale runs as a trial to the end of 2026. For Taormina, Siracusa or Noto there is no fixed taxi fare, and a pre-booked transfer gives you the full price in advance. See Catania taxi versus chauffeur.

Are your Catania chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every booking is carried out by an NCC operator, noleggio con conducente, holding an authorisation issued by a comune under Legge 21/1992. The operator keeps its base and garage in that comune and takes every job as an advance booking, which is exactly how RYDES works: we arrange the trip, and the licensed operator carries it out. In 2020 the Constitutional Court (ruling 56/2020) struck down the rule sending an NCC car back to its garage after every job, and a national electronic register for taxi and NCC, RENT, is being rolled out.

Can an NCC car be hailed or pick up at the taxi rank?

No. Under Italian law an NCC car works only on advance bookings, received by the operator by phone, app or online. It cannot take street hails or wait at a taxi rank for passengers who have not booked. Your chauffeur collects you, by name, at the meeting point they send you.

Are tolls, IVA and airport fees included?

Yes. The 10 percent IVA on NCC passenger transport, any motorway toll on the route and the operator's airport costs are all inside the euro price you are quoted. Paid parking where you ask the car to wait, the Strait of Messina ferry and your hotel's tourist tax are not.

How long does Catania airport to Siracusa take?

About 64 km, usually 55 to 70 minutes off-peak and up to 1 hour 30 on busy summer days. Ortigia's narrow lanes decide where the car can stop, and the chauffeur names the closest point to your door. See Catania airport to Siracusa and Siracusa and Ortigia.

Can you take me to Noto, Modica and Ragusa?

Yes. Noto is about 87 km from the airport, typically 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30, and Ragusa Ibla about 102 km, close to 2 hours. A day across the baroque towns is usually best booked by the hour so the car waits at each stop. See Catania airport to Noto and the Val di Noto.

Can I book a chauffeur for an Etna day?

Yes, by the hour, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. Rifugio Sapienza, on the south side, is about 44 km from the airport but close to an hour of mountain road through Nicolosi, and the wine villages on the north side make a natural afternoon. In winter, ask for an SUV. See Etna tours with a chauffeur.

Do you go to Palermo, Cefalù and Agrigento?

Yes, as one fixed fare for the whole run. Palermo is about 207 km from Catania airport, roughly 2 hours 40 off-peak; Cefalù about 182 km and Agrigento about 158 km. See Catania to Palermo, Catania to Cefalù and Agrigento to Catania.

Do you include the ferry to the mainland from Messina?

No. We drive you to the port at Messina, about 109 km from Catania airport and usually under 1 hour 40, but the crossing of the Strait is a separate ticket. A licensed operator for the mainland side is confirmed at booking if you need a car waiting there. See Catania to Messina.

Is Catania busy during the Festa di Sant'Agata?

Very. The feast of Catania's patron saint runs from 3 to 5 February, and on the procession days of 4 and 5 February the city centre closes to traffic. Pickups and drop-offs in the centre move to the edge of the closure, and dispatch tells you where in advance.

How much waiting time do I get at Catania airport?

Sixty minutes free from the actual landing time, tracked on the aircraft rather than the timetable. Every other pickup includes 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the vehicle class rate, and you are told before it starts.

How far ahead should I book in Catania?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and reservations open up to a year ahead. For July and August, the Taormina Film Festival in June (10 to 14 June in 2026), Le Contrade dell'Etna in April and Sant'Agata in February, book as early as you can. Wedding and group bookings are on wedding transportation.

Does my hotel charge a tourist tax?

Catania and Taormina charge a per-night tourist tax, the imposta di soggiorno, collected by your hotel. It is not part of the transfer price and never appears on a RYDES booking.
