How Lake Como actually gets used.

No airport, a shoreline road built for horses and carts, villas reached by private drives, and a summer calendar run by weddings. The cars are the same everywhere; the planning on this lake is not.

Weddings.

Lake Como weddings mean guests in three hotels, a ceremony in a village church and a dinner at a villa across the water. Wedding transportation on the lake is planned around the shore road and the ferry timetable, not only the guest list.

What is a Lake Como chauffeur service?

A Como chauffeur service is a private car and driver reserved ahead at a fixed euro price and run by a licensed NCC operator. NCC stands for noleggio con conducente, the Italian chauffeur licence created by Legge 21/1992, the national framework law for non-scheduled road passenger transport. The authorisation is issued by a comune, every trip is booked in advance with the operator, and an NCC car cannot take street hails or queue at a taxi rank. A RYDES booking fits that model by design: the car, the chauffeur and the price are settled before the day, whether it is a Malpensa to Lake Como airport transfer, an hourly car service for a day between villages or a black car to a villa gate in Cernobbio.

What makes the lake different is the last 30 kilometres, not the first 50. Milan's airport taxi fixed fares stop at Milan, so there is no fixed taxi fare to Bellagio, Tremezzo or Varenna. The western shore road narrows to a single file between stone walls, a crossing on the car ferry can be the fastest way between two towns, and many hotels and villas sit down private drives. A reserved Lake Como car service arrives knowing the address, the gate arrangements and the right side of the lake to drive, and the quote already holds the 10 percent IVA, any autostrada toll and any ferry fare on the way.

The same reservation covers the rest of the lake and the cities around it: Como to Bellagio, the run to Varenna and Menaggio, Como to Milan for a meeting or a train, and cross-border runs to Lugano and St Moritz. If you are weighing a meter against a fixed fare, the Lake Como taxi alternative page sets them side by side, and companies housing teams on the lake during a Milan fair week can book through corporate travel with central billing.

The airports that serve Lake Como.

Lake Como has no airport and no runway nearby. Three Milan airports and Lugano across the Swiss border share the traffic, and which one is best depends on where on the lake you are staying.

Lake Como’s four arrival airports: rough road kilometres and usual car times into Como town.

Every figure runs from the airport kerb to Como town by private car. Bellagio, Tremezzo and Varenna add 30 to 50 minutes to the Malpensa and Linate figures, more on a summer weekend. Malpensa handled 31.2 million passengers in 2025, Linate 11.1 million and Bergamo about 16.8 million. For travel within Milan itself, see Milan chauffeur service.

Where your chauffeur meets you.

Four arrival points and one destination that matters more than any of them: the gate or the hotel door on the lake. Each has its own rhythm.

Malpensa arrivals.

Most transatlantic and Gulf flights to the lake land at Malpensa. The message you receive before landing gives the exact meeting point, and whatever the airport charges a car to collect you is already counted. The drive runs east on the autostrada towards Como, then either into town or along the shore to Cernobbio; see Malpensa to Como and Malpensa to Cernobbio.

A long-haul arrival usually means jet lag and a lot of luggage, and the last stretch to a western-shore hotel is narrow and slow. If you are going on to Tremezzo or Malpensa to Bellagio, it is worth booking a class with room to sleep in. The Milan taxi fixed fare of €114 from Malpensa covers Milan only and has no equivalent for the lake.

  • Meet and greet, at extra costA name board held up in the arrivals hall, worth having after a night flight with children or a trolley of cases.
  • Luggage and garment bagsTell us at booking. For a wedding party, dresses and suit carriers decide the vehicle class as much as passengers.
Malpensa arrivals · 900 × 600

Linate arrivals.

Linate sits on the east side of Milan and is the shorter start for Bellagio and the eastern shore. The drive skirts the city, then runs north through the Brianza towards Lecco or Como; timing for the central lake is on Linate to Bellagio. The meeting point is confirmed in the message before landing.

Linate traffic is Milan traffic, so the first half hour depends on the city's ring roads. Full detail is on Linate to Lake Como.

Bergamo and Lugano arrivals.

Bergamo, about 82 km from Como town, is the natural arrival for Varenna and the Lecco shore, because the route avoids Milan entirely; see Bergamo to Varenna.

Lugano airport, across the Swiss border, is the closest runway to Como town at about 35 km. A pickup in Switzerland needs an operator licensed for the Swiss side, which is confirmed at booking rather than sold automatically; every passenger carries a passport or ID card. Timing is on Lugano airport to Como.

Bergamo and Lugano · 900 × 600
Bergamo arrivals kerb, Lugano terminal behind

Your villa or hotel gate.

Many lake journeys begin or end behind a gate. Villas along the western shore are reached by private drives that drop steeply from the Statale Regina, and the grand hotels in Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Bellagio run their own forecourts. Put the villa name, the gate code or concierge contact and any parking instructions in the booking notes. Hotels such as Villa d’Este receive cars at their own forecourt.

Waiting at an address is free for 15 minutes from the agreed time. Some villa drives cannot take a Van or a Group minibus at all; when that happens dispatch arranges a handover point on the main road, and tells you before the day rather than on arrival.

Villa gate · 900 × 600

Meeting points are given by your chauffeur in the message sent before you land, because terminal arrangements change. Treat that message as the authority on where to walk, and the booking notes as the place to tell us how to reach your door.

Tolls, ferries, IVA and licensing.

There is no congestion charge on the lake. The price is shaped by autostrada tolls, the car ferry when the route uses it, the 10 percent IVA and the licence the car carries.

The motorway from Milan to Como, the A9, carries a toll of about €4.10, and Italian autostrada tolls rose by about 1.5 percent on average in 2026. Whatever toll the route uses is inside your RYDES price.

The car ferry between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, run by Navigazione Laghi, links the central lake in 10 to 30 minutes. From 1 April 2026 one crossing including the driver costs €10.10 for a car up to 3.5 m, €12.70 for one between 3.5 and 4.5 m, and €16.80 for anything longer, which is where most chauffeur sedans, SUVs and vans fall. When dispatch routes your car over the water, the ferry fare is part of the route like a toll and is inside the quote.

NCC passenger transport carries the reduced 10 percent IVA, and 10 percent IVA is inside every RYDES price. Every car is an NCC under Legge 21/1992, amended in 2018 and 2019: the authorisation comes from a comune, the operator keeps its base and at least one rimessa (garage) there, with further rimesse allowed in the same province, and each trip is booked with the operator in advance. In 2020 the Constitutional Court (ruling 56/2020) struck down the rule making an NCC car return to its garage after every job. A 2024 ministerial decree that set a 20-minute gap between booking and pickup and barred continuing contracts with platforms and intermediaries was annulled by TAR Lazio in July 2025 and by the Constitutional Court in ruling 163/2025. The national electronic register for taxis and NCC, RENT, is being rolled out. RYDES arranges the trip; the licensed NCC operator carries it out.

Two charges sit outside the fare. Como's tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) is charged by your hotel, not the car; rates since 2024 have been up to €5 per person per night, and 2026 rates are not confirmed. A paid car park you ask the chauffeur to use, say in Bellagio over lunch, is also yours to pay. The walled centre of Como and the Piazza Cavour lakefront are a camera-enforced ZTL (zona a traffico limitato), and hotels inside it register guests' plates; dispatch confirms ZTL access for your address, and if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. The comparison in full is on Lake Como taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Map apps get the lake wrong. They assume open roads, and the shore roads are narrow, winding and shared with cyclists, buses and delivery vans. On a summer weekend, add a lot.

Bellagio to Como town45 min to 1 h1 h 10 to 1 h 40The winding eastern road of the Como branch

Two things these columns do not show. A wedding Saturday in June can put several coaches and dozens of cars on the same stretch of the Statale Regina at once, and a Sunday evening return to Milan meets everyone else doing the same. For a flight you cannot miss, leave the lake with the peak figure plus half an hour.

Further afield.

Every run below is quoted once, start to finish, so a slow Sunday on the A9 or a long ferry queue at Bellagio is the operator's problem, not a surprise on your bill.

Longer runs from the lake, with rough kilometres and car times.

Lugano and St Moritz are in Switzerland, so a licensed operator for the other side of the border is confirmed at booking, and every passenger carries a passport or ID card. For lake addresses, the price is fixed to the address you give and to the route dispatch chooses, which may be the western shore, the eastern shore or the ferry.

Where we pick up.

Around the whole lake, from Como town to the head of the water, and south into the Brianza and Milan. The chauffeur is dispatched by a licensed NCC operator who works these roads every week.

Which car, for Como.

The capacities below are real-world numbers. On the lake, the road matters as much as the luggage: some stretches suit a sedan far better than a van.

Vehicle classes available in Como. Models vary by operator and are always equivalent or better than the examples shown.

Larger vehicles are where the lake bites. From 15 March to 15 November each year the Statale Regina between Colonno and the Tremezzina runs with restrictions: tourist coaches northbound only, and trucks over 11 m banned from 06:30 to 21:00. A Van or Group minibus can be limited on that stretch, so dispatch picks the vehicle and the route together, using the SS36 and Lecco on the eastern side when that is the better way. Full capacity detail is on the vehicle classes page, and guest logistics on Lake Como weddings.

What the Lake Como price contains.

No meter running round the lake, no extra for the ferry, and nothing that appears once the cases are at the villa door.

Every car on the lake runs under an NCC authorisation from a comune, booked in advance under Legge 21/1992.
Child seats and pets
Child seats cost extra; the operator brings them and a parent fits them. Pets cost extra too. Service animals never do.
What is not included
Any car park you ask the chauffeur to use, and the tourist tax your hotel collects. Nothing else is added.

When you should not book us.

Como town has good trains from Milan, and for some trips they beat any car.

From Milano Centrale, direct trains reach Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes, roughly 17 times a day, from about €5.40. From Milano Cadorna, the line to Como Nord Lago takes about an hour and stops on the lakefront itself. If you are one person with one bag going to Como town, the train is the right call, and we would rather tell you so.

A chauffeur earns its place elsewhere: a family arriving at Malpensa after a night flight, a villa on the western shore that no station reaches, a wedding party spread across three hotels, a late return from Milan after the last trains, or a run to Lugano or St Moritz. That covers most of why people book on this lake, but not every journey. The full comparison is on Lake Como taxi versus chauffeur.

Which airport is best for Lake Como?

It depends on where you stay. Malpensa, about 50 km from Como town, suits long-haul flights and the western shore. Linate, about 54 km away, is shorter for Bellagio and Varenna. Bergamo suits the eastern shore by way of Lecco, and Lugano airport in Switzerland is the closest at about 35 km. Compare Malpensa to Lake Como with Linate to Lake Como.

How long is the drive from Malpensa to Lake Como?

To Como town, about 50 km, usually 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 off-peak and 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 on a summer weekend. Bellagio and Tremezzo take about 1 hour 35 to 1 hour 55 off-peak and up to 2 hours 40 on a busy weekend. See Malpensa to Como and Malpensa to Bellagio.

Is there a fixed taxi fare from Malpensa to Lake Como?

No. The Milan airport taxi fixed fares apply only to Milan, with Malpensa to Milan at €114, and there is no fixed taxi fare to the lake. With RYDES you know the whole price before you travel, 10 percent IVA, tolls and any car ferry already in it. The comparison is on Lake Como taxi versus chauffeur.

How do I get from Linate to Bellagio?

By car, Linate to Bellagio is about 75 km, usually 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 40 off-peak and 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 20 on a summer weekend, north through the Brianza and up the lake road. See Linate to Bellagio and Bellagio chauffeur service.

Can you take us to Villa d'Este in Cernobbio?

Yes. Cernobbio is about 55 km from Malpensa and about 33 km from Lugano airport, usually 1 hour to 1 hour 15 from Malpensa off-peak. Cars pull up at the hotel's own forecourt. See Villa d’Este transfers and Malpensa to Cernobbio.

Does the price include the car ferry?

Yes. When dispatch routes your car over the water between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, the ferry fare is part of the route, like a toll, and is inside the quote. Since 1 April 2026 Navigazione Laghi charges €10.10 to €16.80 per crossing by vehicle length, driver included, and crossings take 10 to 30 minutes.

Can a minibus drive the western shore of Lake Como?

Sometimes, with limits. From 15 March to 15 November the Statale Regina between Colonno and the Tremezzina has restrictions: tourist coaches northbound only and trucks over 11 m banned from 06:30 to 21:00. The Tremezzina bypass is still under construction. On that stretch a Van or Group minibus may be limited, so dispatch chooses the vehicle and route, often the eastern side by Lecco. See Lake Como weddings.

Do you handle Lake Como wedding transport?

Yes. Weddings on the lake run from spring to early autumn, with guests often split between hotels in Como, Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Bellagio. We plan the vehicles around the shore road, the ferry and the timings of the day, and book First for the couple and Group or Vans for guests where the roads allow. See wedding transportation.

Are autostrada tolls included?

Yes. Any toll the route uses is inside the price. The A9 between Milan and Como costs about €4.10, and Italian tolls rose by about 1.5 percent on average in 2026. There are no tolls on the lake roads themselves.

Is IVA included in the price?

Yes. NCC passenger transport in Italy carries the reduced 10 percent IVA, and RYDES quotes include it, together with tolls, ferry fares and any airport collection cost. Parking you ask for and the hotel's tourist tax are not included.

Are Lake Como chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every car is an NCC, noleggio con conducente, licensed under Legge 21/1992. The authorisation is issued by a comune, the operator keeps a base and rimessa there, and every trip is booked in advance with the operator. An NCC cannot take street hails or wait at taxi ranks for unbooked passengers.

Can the car drive into Como's historic centre?

The walled centre of Como and the Piazza Cavour lakefront are a camera-enforced ZTL, and hotels inside it register guests' plates. Dispatch confirms ZTL access for your address; if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. We never promise a car can reach a pedestrian street.

Should I just take the train from Milan to Como?

If you are alone with one bag and heading to Como town, yes. Direct trains from Milano Centrale reach Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes, about 17 times a day, from about €5.40, and the line from Milano Cadorna reaches Como Nord Lago on the lakefront in about an hour. A chauffeur is worth it for families, villas on the shore and late arrivals.

Can I hire a car by the hour on Lake Como?

Yes. Book at least two hours, then add time in half-hour steps; the car stays with you between villas, lunch and the boat. If the day uses the car ferry, the fare is in the quote. See hourly chauffeur on Lake Como and Varenna and Menaggio.

Do you go to Lugano and St Moritz?

Yes. Como to Lugano is about 30 km over the border at Chiasso, and St Moritz is a longer run up the lake and over the Maloja Pass. For Swiss pickups and drop-offs, a licensed operator for the other side of the border is confirmed at booking. See Como to Lugano and Como to St Moritz.

When should I book early for Lake Como?

For the wedding season from spring to early autumn, for summer weekends, and for Milan fair weeks that send guests to the lake: Salone del Mobile on 13 to 18 April 2027 and Milan Fashion Week, provisionally 23 February to 1 March 2027. The Italian Grand Prix at Monza runs 3 to 5 September 2027. RYDES needs 3 hours' notice and books up to a year ahead; see private transfers.

What if my flight is delayed?

Give us the flight number and we track it; a late arrival costs nothing extra, and the free hour of waiting begins only when the aircraft lands. If your flight diverts from Malpensa to Linate or Bergamo, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur to the new airport.
