Venice black car service

What is a Venice chauffeur service?

A Venice chauffeur service is pre-booked private road transport at a fixed price, carried out by an NCC operator (noleggio con conducente) licensed under Legge 21/1992, between the airports, the edge of the historic city and the mainland. Because no car can enter historic Venice, the road journey ends at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park, and the last stretch to a hotel on the canals is a walk, a vaporetto or a water taxi. A Venice airport transfer, an hourly car service on the mainland or a black car to Mestre is settled before the day.

Where a booked Venice car service earns its place is luggage and distance. Three large cases from arrivals to the Piazzale Roma drop-off are easier in a waiting car, and a Mestre hotel is door to door with no boat at all. The quoted number already contains the 10 percent IVA and any motorway toll on the route. For the canal part of the journey, our taxi alternative page sets out honestly what the water taxi, the vaporetto and the land taxi cost against a chauffeur.

The longer the trip, the stronger the case. Marco Polo to Cortina, Marco Polo to Jesolo, Marco Polo to Verona, a day in the Prosecco hills or a cruise terminal transfer are all one fixed fare in a car that does not stop for anyone else. Delegations and weddings use private transfers and wedding transportation on the same fleet, and routes beyond the Veneto are quoted the same way.

The two airports that serve Venice.

Marco Polo sits on the lagoon edge at Tessera, close to the city. Treviso, further inland, is the low-cost alternative. Both are a road run to Piazzale Roma, the last point a car can reach.

Drive times are door to door from the pickup point to the Piazzale Roma kerb, for a direct private vehicle. Peak means weekday rush hours on the mainland and summer weekends, when the Ponte della Libertà fills with coaches. The time from Piazzale Roma to your hotel on foot or by boat is extra and depends on where in the city you are staying.

Where your chauffeur meets you, and where the car stops.

Two handovers matter: at the airport, where you find your chauffeur, and at Piazzale Roma, where the road runs out.

Venice Marco Polo.

Marco Polo handled about 11 million passengers between January and November 2025 and close to 12 million for the full year. About a quarter is long-haul; North American routes carried over 950,000 passengers in January to September 2025. It sits on the mainland edge of the lagoon at Tessera, which is why the road run into Venice is so short.

Marco Polo does not publish a dedicated meeting point for pre-booked NCC cars that we can point you to here, so your chauffeur names the exact place to walk to in the message sent before you land. Standard pickup is the free default. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a paid add-on. The drive itself is on Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma and Marco Polo to Mestre.

  • Standard pickup, the free defaultYour chauffeur sends the meeting point before landing and waits there with the car close by.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onChauffeur inside the arrivals hall holding your name, worth it after a long-haul flight and passport control.
  • Going by water insteadThe water taxi and Alilaguna dock is a 7 to 10 minute covered walk from the terminal. That journey is booked directly with the boat company, not through RYDES.

Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto.

Piazzale Roma is the bus and car terminus at the western end of the Ponte della Libertà, the road bridge from the mainland. It is the last point a car can reach in historic Venice. Your chauffeur unloads at the kerb and the journey by road ends there. From the square you walk into the city, take a vaporetto (the ACTV water bus) along the Grand Canal, or take a water taxi to a hotel jetty. Santa Lucia railway station is a short walk across the canal.

Tronchetto is the large car park island next to it, linked to Piazzale Roma by the People Mover, a short elevated shuttle. Dispatch tells you if your booking ends there rather than at Piazzale Roma. RYDES arranges road transfers only; we do not book water taxis or vaporetto tickets.

  • On footFine with a small case. Venice bridges have steps, so heavy luggage is hard work.
  • VaporettoThe ACTV water bus along the Grand Canal. Cheapest way in; you handle your bags.
  • Water taxiA private boat to many hotel jetties, booked directly with the boat operator.

Treviso.

Treviso is Venice's second airport, a smaller terminal used mostly by low-cost airlines, with Spain, Albania and Romania among its main markets. As at Marco Polo, your chauffeur confirms the meeting point in the message before you land, and meet and greet in arrivals is the paid add-on.

The drive to Piazzale Roma from Treviso is about 30 km and usually 40 to 50 minutes. It is the closer airport for Treviso itself and the Prosecco hills.

Terminal and transport facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. The exact pickup point at each airport can change with works and operator arrangements, so treat your chauffeur's message as the authority on where to walk.

Access fee, tourist tax, tolls and the licence.

Venice has no congestion charge on the road. What visitors meet instead is a city access fee on certain days, a per-night tax at the hotel, and the motorway tolls of the wider Veneto. Only the last of these is ever in a RYDES price.

The Venice access fee (contributo di accesso) is a day-visitor charge, not a road charge. In 2026 it ran as a trial on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, at €5 when booked at least four days ahead and €10 after that. People staying overnight anywhere in the municipality, Veneto residents and children under 14 were exempt, and people who only pass through Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, the Stazione Marittima, Santa Lucia station or the Ponte della Libertà did not owe it. Being dropped at Piazzale Roma by your chauffeur does not trigger the fee on its own. The 2027 rules are undecided.

The tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) is charged by your accommodation per person per night, never by the car. For short lets it is €3 to €5 a night from February to December, lower in January, charged for a maximum of five nights, with children under 10 exempt. Motorway tolls are different: any toll on the A4 or the A27 that your route uses is already in your price. NCC passenger transport carries the reduced 10 percent IVA, and 10 percent IVA is inside every RYDES fare.

Every car is an NCC, noleggio con conducente, licensed under Legge 21/1992, the national framework law for non-scheduled road passenger transport. The authorisation is issued by a comune, where the operator keeps its base and at least one rimessa (garage). An NCC trip is always booked in advance with the operator, and the car may not take street hails or wait at taxi ranks except for a passenger who has booked. The Constitutional Court (ruling 56/2020) struck down the rule obliging an NCC car to go back to its garage after each job, and in 2025 the courts annulled the 2024 ministerial decree's minimum gap between booking and pickup and its ban on continuing contracts with platforms (TAR Lazio, July 2025; Constitutional Court ruling 163/2025). The national RENT register for taxi and NCC is being rolled out. RYDES arranges the booking; the licensed NCC operator carries out the journey.

A land taxi from the Marco Polo rank to Piazzale Roma costs about €40 to €50 and takes 15 to 20 minutes, according to third-party estimates; taxi tariffs are set by the comune. Historic Venice is not a ZTL question, because past Piazzale Roma there are no roads at all. In the mainland centres a chauffeur visits, such as Padua, Treviso and Verona, dispatch confirms ZTL access for your address; if the car cannot enter, the drop-off is at the nearest permitted point. The full comparison is on Venice taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

The roads around the lagoon are short, and one of them, the bridge to Piazzale Roma, carries almost everything. Summer weekends and the beach traffic towards Jesolo stretch these numbers more than weekday rush hour does.

Leaving the lagoon.

This is where a chauffeur is most clearly worth it in Venice. Intercity runs are priced as one fixed fare for the whole journey, with tolls inside it, so a slow A4 on a Friday is the operator's problem.

What the Venice price contains.

No meter and no surge. Just as clear: the boat after Piazzale Roma is not in it.

Tolls and IVA
Any A4 or A27 toll on the route and the 10 percent IVA are inside the quoted number, in euros.
The run to the water's edge
The car takes you to the Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto kerb and the chauffeur unloads your luggage there. The walk, vaporetto or water taxi beyond is yours to choose and pay for.
Gratuity is optional
The chauffeur's pay for the run is agreed before the job is accepted. A tip is offered once at payment, and declining it is fine.
Flight tracking
Send the flight number and we follow the aircraft. An early or late landing moves the pickup at no cost.

Child seats are supplied on request as a paid add-on and fitted by the parent. Pets are a paid add-on; service animals always ride free.
What is not included
Water taxis and vaporetto tickets, the Venice access fee on the days it applies, the tourist tax at your accommodation, and paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges.

When you should not book us.

In Venice the cheap options are genuinely good, and often the right call.

With light bags from Marco Polo, take the ACTV Aerobus line 5. It runs to Piazzale Roma every 15 to 20 minutes, takes 20 to 25 minutes and costs €10 one way,. If your hotel is near San Marco or Rialto, the Alilaguna water bus at about €15 one way goes there directly: about 70 to 75 minutes on the Blu line via Murano to San Marco, or 65 to 70 minutes on the Arancio line to Rialto. If you want to arrive by boat at your hotel's door with luggage, a pre-booked water taxi at about €130 to €170 for up to four is the honest answer, and you book it directly. For Padua, Verona or Milan, Frecciarossa and Italo trains from Santa Lucia are often the right choice for one or two people.

A chauffeur makes sense when the road is the whole journey or the hard part of it: heavy luggage, young children, a hotel in Mestre or on the airport side, a cruise embarkation with cases, a late arrival, or a day out to the Dolomites, the Prosecco hills or Lake Garda. The full comparison is on Venice taxi versus chauffeur.

Venice questions.

Can a chauffeur car drive into Venice?

No. No car can enter historic Venice. The road ends at Piazzale Roma, at the western end of the Ponte della Libertà, or at the Tronchetto car park next to it, which the People Mover links to Piazzale Roma. A chauffeur takes you there; from there you walk, take a vaporetto or take a water taxi to your hotel. See Piazzale Roma transfers.

Does RYDES book water taxis in Venice?

No. RYDES arranges road transfers carried out by licensed NCC operators. Water taxis and vaporetto tickets are booked directly with the boat operators. A pre-booked water taxi from Marco Polo costs about €130 to €170 per boat for up to four people with standard luggage, and the dock is a 7 to 10 minute covered walk from the terminal.

Is it worth booking a car from Marco Polo, or should I take the bus?

For one or two people with light bags, the ACTV Aerobus line 5 is the sensible choice: €10 one way, 20 to 25 minutes to Piazzale Roma, every 15 to 20 minutes. A chauffeur is worth it with heavy luggage, children, a group, a late arrival or a hotel in Mestre or on the mainland, where the car goes to the door. See Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Venice Marco Polo?

Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, along with their name, photo and the vehicle. Standard pickup is free; meet and greet inside the arrivals hall, with your name on a sign, is a paid add-on. Details are on the Marco Polo airport transfer page.

How long does Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma take?

About 15 km, usually 20 to 30 minutes off-peak and 30 to 50 minutes at busy times, because everything crosses the single road bridge. Then add the walk or boat to your hotel. A land taxi from the rank costs about €40 to €50 for the same run. See Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma.

Do I pay the Venice access fee if I am dropped at Piazzale Roma?

Not just for being dropped there. In the 2026 trial, which ran on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July at €5 booked at least four days ahead or €10 later, people only passing through Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, the cruise terminal, Santa Lucia station or the Ponte della Libertà did not owe it. The rules for 2027 are undecided.

Is the Venice tourist tax in the fare?

No. The imposta di soggiorno is charged by your accommodation per person per night, not by the car. For short lets it is €3 to €5 a night from February to December, lower in January, for up to five nights, and children under 10 are exempt.

Are tolls and IVA included in a Venice price?

Yes. Any A4 or A27 motorway toll on the route and the 10 percent IVA on NCC passenger transport are inside the price quoted at booking, in euros. Boats, the access fee, the tourist tax and paid parking are outside it. See Venice car service.

Are your Venice chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every car is an NCC, noleggio con conducente, licensed under Legge 21/1992 by the comune where the operator keeps its base and rimessa. NCC trips are always booked in advance with the operator; the car cannot be hailed on the street or wait at a taxi rank for passengers who have not booked. RYDES arranges the booking and the licensed operator carries out the journey.

Can you collect me from my cruise ship in Venice?

Yes, at the Stazione Marittima, the cruise terminal beside Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto, which cars can reach. Large cruise ships no longer sail past St Mark's, so check which terminal your line uses and send the ship name with the booking. Marco Polo is about 15 km away, usually 20 to 35 minutes. See Venice cruise terminal transfers.

Do you cover Treviso airport?

Yes. Treviso is Venice's second airport, used mostly by low-cost airlines. Piazzale Roma is about 30 km away, usually 40 to 50 minutes, and the airport is the closer one for Treviso itself and the Prosecco hills. See Treviso airport transfers and Treviso to Piazzale Roma.

Can you drive me from Venice to Cortina and the Dolomites?

Yes, as one fixed fare. Cortina d'Ampezzo is about 147 km from Marco Polo, usually 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes, longer on winter Saturdays. The 2026 Winter Olympics are over, but Cortina remains a winter destination; book an SUV between December and March. See Marco Polo to Cortina and Cortina and the Dolomites.

Can I book a car for a Prosecco hills day?

Yes. Valdobbiadene is about 69 km from Marco Polo, usually 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, and a tasting day is best booked by the hour so the car waits at each stop. Two-hour minimum, then 30-minute increments. See Prosecco hills and hourly chauffeur hire.

Should I take the train to Padua, Verona or Milan instead?

Often, yes, for one or two people with light bags: Frecciarossa and Italo run from Santa Lucia station, a short walk from Piazzale Roma. A car wins with luggage, a group, a stop on the way or an address away from the stations. See Venice to Padua, Venice to Verona and Venice to Milan.

How far in advance should I book in Venice?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and RYDES takes reservations up to a year ahead. Book early around the Biennale, the Venice Film Festival at the Lido in late summer, Carnival in February, the Redentore in July and the Regata Storica in September; event dates are confirmed at booking. Groups should look at private transfers.

What if my flight to Venice is delayed?

Add your flight number and we track the aircraft. A delay moves your pickup at no cost, and the 60 free minutes start at the actual landing. If a flight is diverted, for example from Marco Polo to Treviso, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur to the new airport. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
