How Ljubljana bookings are used.

The capital itself is small enough to walk. Most of the driving happens on the way in from Brnik and on the days spent in the mountains, the caves and on the coast.

What is a Ljubljana chauffeur service?

A Ljubljana chauffeur service is private ground transport booked ahead at a fixed price in euros, carried out by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Slovenia under the Road Transport Act (Zakon o prevozih v cestnem prometu). You do not hail it and it does not run on a taximeter. Car, chauffeur and fare are agreed before the journey, whether that is a LJU airport transfer from Brnik, an hourly car service for a day at the lakes, or a black car to a meeting near the BTC.

What separates it from a taxi is predictability. A metered cab from the airport into town tends to come to about €35 to €45, and the figure only settles when the meter stops. A reserved Ljubljana car service fare is fixed when you book, and it already contains the 9.5 percent VAT on passenger transport and the Slovenian e-vignette needed on the motorways. For anyone weighing the two, the taxi alternative in Ljubljana page sets the costs side by side.

Most bookings here leave the city. LJU to Bled and LJU to Bohinj for the lakes, Ljubljana to Postojna for the caves, LJU to Piran for the Adriatic, and Julian Alps day trips through Kranjska Gora. For organisations sending people to Slovenia regularly, corporate travel adds central invoicing on the same vehicles, and the full list of private transfers and routes sits at the foot of this page.

Getting to Ljubljana by air.

Slovenia has one main airport, north of the capital at Brnik. Long-haul travellers often land across the border instead, and a car stitches the two together.

Airports and arrival points for Ljubljana, with road distance and typical door-to-door driving time for a direct private vehicle.

Times are door to door from the pickup point in a direct private vehicle, widened from free-flow road estimates. Peak means weekday commuting hours on the Ljubljana ring and the summer weekends, when the roads to Bled and the coast fill with day traffic. Every run that crosses into Italy, Croatia or Austria is confirmed at booking with an operator licensed for the other side, and each passenger should carry a passport or national ID card.

Where the chauffeur meets you, and where the car stops.

Brnik is a straightforward airport to be collected from. The harder part of Ljubljana is the centre itself, where cars give way to pedestrians.

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik (LJU).

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik sits on the plain at Brnik, near Kranj, and handled 1,591,443 passengers in 2025, a rise of 10.6 percent on the year before. It is compact by European standards, so the walk from baggage to the car is short. Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, along with the vehicle and plate.

Because the airport lies north of the city, it is well placed for the mountains. Bled is roughly as far from Brnik as the old town is, and Kranjska Gora and Bohinj are each under an hour on a clear road. Travellers heading straight to the lakes rarely need to touch Ljubljana at all. Timing for the city run is on LJU to Ljubljana centre.

  • Standard pickup, freeThe chauffeur waits at the meeting point given in the pre-arrival message. You walk out with your bags and go.
  • Meet and greet, paid add-onThe chauffeur waits inside arrivals with your name, useful for a first visit, a group or a client you are hosting.
  • Flight trackedThe pickup follows the aircraft, early or late, and the free hour starts from the real landing time.

The car-free centre.

Ljubljana began closing its historic core to traffic in 2007, and by 2016 the pedestrian zone covered about 10 hectares around the river, Prešeren Square and the old town streets under the castle. Cars need a city permit to enter. Access for chauffeur vehicles has not been confirmed, so plan on being dropped and collected at the edge of the zone, usually a short walk from the hotel door.

Inside the zone, the city's Kavalir electric shuttles run every day from 08:00 to 20:00 and are free to ride, which helps with luggage or anyone who finds the cobbles hard going. When you book, give the hotel name rather than the street, and the operator will pick the nearest point a car can legally reach.

Venice Marco Polo (VCE).

For travellers from outside Europe, the connection into Brnik is sometimes poor or expensive, and Venice is the practical alternative. The drive is about 256 km to LJU and a little less to the capital, typically just under three hours in clear conditions. It is a cross-border run, so dispatch confirms the licensed operator for the Italian side when the booking is made. See Venice airport to Ljubljana.

The same logic works in reverse for a trip that ends in Italy. A morning collection from a Ljubljana hotel, a stop at the coast or at the caves, and a late-afternoon drop at the Venice terminal is one booking. Details for staying in Italy are on the Venice chauffeur page.

Airport and zone details were checked against public sources in October 2026. Pickup points can move with construction or event closures, so treat your chauffeur's message as the authority on where to walk.

VAT, the vignette and the tourist tax.

Slovenia has no city congestion charge and no booth tolls for cars. What reaches the passenger is the sales tax on the ride, the motorway vignette and, separately, the tourist tax at your accommodation.

Cars on Slovenian motorways and expressways must carry an e-vignette (e-vinjeta), a digital permit tied to the number plate rather than a sticker. For 2026 the car rates are about €16 for a week, €32 for a month and €117.50 for a year, and published figures differ slightly between sources. Since 1 January 2026 the coastal sections between Škofije, Koper and Izola need no vignette at all. Whichever applies, it sits inside your RYDES price.

Passenger transport in Slovenia carries 9.5 percent VAT, and that too is inside the quoted fare. The tourist tax is a different matter: it is levied per person per night by the place you stay, about €3 a night for adults in Ljubljana, with reduced rates for children, and it is charged by your accommodation rather than by us. The one cost outside a RYDES quote is paid parking, when you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges.

Uber arrived in Ljubljana on 20 May 2025, working through locally licensed carriers and taxi drivers and charging taximeter prices, so in practice it is a way of calling a taxi rather than a separate tier. The comparison that matters is between a metered trip and a fixed one, and that is set out on Ljubljana taxi versus chauffeur.

Drive times from Brnik.

Slovenia is small and the motorways are good, so distance is rarely the problem. Summer weekend traffic towards the lakes and the sea is, and so is the ring road around the capital at commuting time.

LJU to Venice airport2 h 50 to 3 h 153 h 15 to 4 hAbout 256 km via the Karst and the Italian motorway

These are ranges widened from free-flow estimates, not timetables. The roads to Bled, Bohinj and the coast are at their worst on fine summer Saturdays and on the Sunday return, when an extra half hour is ordinary. Snow on the routes into the Julian Alps can do more than traffic in midwinter, so for a flight you cannot miss, leave a generous margin.

Day trips and onward runs.

Each journey is quoted as one fixed fare to the address you give. A day with several stops is usually better booked by the hour, because the car stays with you.

Common runs from Ljubljana and the airport. Distances are measured from LJU; from the city centre, northern destinations sit a little further and southern ones a little closer.

Cross-border runs need an operator authorised to carry passengers on both sides, so Trieste, Klagenfurt, Zagreb and Venice are confirmed by dispatch rather than sold automatically. Every passenger should travel with a passport or ID card. For Croatia beyond the capital, see the Zagreb chauffeur page.

When you should not book us.

Ljubljana is cheap to reach from the airport if you have time and travel light, and a chauffeur is not always the sensible choice.

A solo traveller in no hurry should look first at the shared shuttles. GoOpti and similar services run from Brnik into the city for about €9 to €14 a seat, with a few other passengers on board. The Arriva bus is cheaper still at about €4 and takes 45 to 50 minutes, but it runs infrequently and the last one leaves at around 21:00. A metered taxi into the centre usually comes to about €35 to €45 and takes 25 to 30 minutes. Once you are staying inside the pedestrian zone, you will hardly need a car at all, and the free Kavalir shuttles cover the old town from 08:00 to 20:00.

A private car makes sense when the conditions change: a late landing after the last bus, three or four people sharing, children and car seats, a lot of luggage, a straight run from the airport to Bled or the coast, or a day with several stops at the lakes and caves. That is most of what people book us for, but not every trip, and we would sooner say it plainly. The cost comparison is on Ljubljana taxi versus chauffeur.

How far is Ljubljana airport from the city centre?

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is at Brnik, about 29 km north of Prešeren Square by road. A private car usually takes 25 to 35 minutes, and up to 55 minutes at commuting time or on busy summer days. See LJU to Ljubljana centre.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Ljubljana airport?

At the meeting point named in the message your chauffeur sends before you land, which also gives the car and plate. That standard pickup is free. Meet and greet inside arrivals with a name board is a paid add-on. Full detail is on the LJU airport transfer page.

Can the car drive into the old town?

Usually not. Ljubljana's historic centre has been a pedestrian zone since 2007 and covered about 10 hectares by 2016, and cars need a city permit to enter. Plan on drop-off and pickup at the edge of the zone. Inside it, the free Kavalir electric shuttles run every day from 08:00 to 20:00.

Are VAT and the motorway vignette included?

Yes. The 9.5 percent VAT on passenger transport and the Slovenian e-vignette are inside the euro price you are quoted. Paid parking at a stop is the only thing outside it. The tourist tax, about €3 a night for adults in Ljubljana, is charged separately by your accommodation. See Ljubljana taxi alternative.

How much does the Slovenian vignette cost?

For cars in 2026 the e-vignette costs about €16 for a week, €32 for a month and €117.50 for a year, and sources differ slightly. Since 1 January 2026 the coastal sections from Škofije through Koper to Izola need no vignette. On a RYDES booking it is the vehicle's cost, already counted in your fare.

Are Ljubljana chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every journey is carried out by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Slovenia, where the Road Transport Act (Zakon o prevozih v cestnem prometu) sets the rules for carrying paying passengers by road. RYDES arranges the booking; the licensed operator carries out the journey. Licensing and insurance are verified before an operator can take work.

Is Uber available in Ljubljana?

Yes, since 20 May 2025. It works through local licensed carriers and taxi drivers and charges taximeter prices, so it is closer to calling a taxi than to a separate service. A chauffeur booking differs in that the price is fixed before you travel and includes 60 minutes of free airport waiting. See Ljubljana taxi versus chauffeur.

How much is a taxi from Ljubljana airport?

A metered taxi from Brnik to the centre usually costs about €35 to €45 and takes 25 to 30 minutes. The final figure depends on the meter. A RYDES fare is agreed at booking and does not change with traffic or waiting at the kerb. Compare on Ljubljana car service.

Is the bus or a shuttle better than a chauffeur?

For a solo traveller in no hurry, often yes. A GoOpti shared shuttle costs about €9 to €14 a seat, and the Arriva bus about €4 for 45 to 50 minutes, although it runs infrequently and the last one leaves at around 21:00. A private car earns its price after a late landing, with luggage, with a family or group, or when you are heading straight to Bled or the coast.

How long does it take to get from the airport to Lake Bled?

About 35 km, typically 30 to 40 minutes, and up to an hour on a busy summer afternoon. Bled is roughly as close to the airport as Ljubljana itself, so many visitors go straight there. Bohinj is about 62 km, around an hour. See LJU to Bled and LJU to Bohinj.

Can I do Lake Bled and Postojna Cave in one day?

Yes, and hourly hire suits it best because the car waits at each stop. The airport sits about 35 km from Bled and 76 km from Postojna, and the two are on opposite sides of the capital, so allow a full day. Hourly bookings have a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. See Lake Bled, Postojna Cave and hourly chauffeur.

How long is the drive to Piran and Portorož?

From the airport, Portorož is about 141 km and Piran about 144 km, usually 1 hour 40 minutes to just over 2 hours, longer on summer weekends. Cars stop at the edge of Piran's old town. See LJU to Piran, Ljubljana to Piran and Piran and Portorož.

Do you drive to Zagreb, Trieste, Klagenfurt or Venice?

Yes, confirmed at booking with an operator licensed for the other side. From LJU, Klagenfurt is about 65 km, Trieste about 117 km, Zagreb about 169 km and Venice airport about 256 km. Each is one fixed fare door to door, and every passenger needs a passport or ID card. See Ljubljana to Zagreb, Ljubljana to Trieste and Venice airport to Ljubljana.

How much free waiting do I get at Ljubljana airport?

Sixty minutes from the actual landing time, tracked against the aircraft rather than the timetable. Every other pickup includes 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the vehicle class rate, and you are told before it starts.

When should I book ahead in Ljubljana?

At least 3 hours before pickup, and up to a year in advance. Book early for marathon weekend in October, the Ljubljana Festival in summer, and July and August, when Bled, Bohinj and the coast are at their busiest. Groups and companies should look at corporate travel in Ljubljana.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel or change free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full, because the operator has already committed a vehicle and chauffeur. A delayed flight is not a cancellation: the pickup simply moves with the aircraft. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
