What is a Tallinn chauffeur service?

A Tallinn chauffeur service is private transport booked ahead at a fixed price in euros, carried out by an operator holding a taxi licence in Estonia under the Public Transport Act, with a driver who holds the national service card. In Tallinn those licences are handled by the Tallinn Transport Department. Nothing is hailed and nothing is metered: the car class, the chauffeur and the total are agreed before you travel, whether the booking is a Tallinn airport transfer, an hourly car service through the centre or a black car to a client meeting.

Estonia does not have a separate chauffeur licence. A paid car with a driver is a taxi in law, and RYDES works only with operators who hold that licence. What RYDES adds is the way the trip is sold: a reserved Tallinn car service that waits for a late flight without a running meter, collects at the ferry terminal on your ticket, and quotes one number with VAT and any airport or road charge already inside it. If an app is all you need, the taxi alternative page says plainly when that is the cheaper choice.

The same reservation covers the port and the country beyond it. TLL to the D-terminal and TLL to the A-terminal for same-day Helsinki connections, cruise port transfers on ship days, TLL to Pirita on the coast road, and fixed-fare Tallinn to Pärnu, Tallinn to Tartu and Tallinn to Riga routes. Companies flying people in every month can put the whole programme on corporate travel in Tallinn, with one invoice across every booking.

How you arrive in Tallinn.

One airport a short drive from the walls, and a harbour that carries more than twice as many people as the airport does. Most visitors arrive by one or the other, and a few by both on the same day.

Times are door to door from the pickup and assume a direct private car, not a shared transfer. Peak means roughly 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 18:30 on a weekday, and also the half hour after a large ship docks, when the harbour streets fill at once. Black Nights week in November and the September marathon weekend add their own delays and are worth planning separately.

Where your chauffeur meets you.

Tallinn is small enough that the drive is rarely the hard part. Knowing which door, which terminal and which quay is where a booking earns its keep.

Tallinn Airport.

Tallinn Airport, named after Lennart Meri, handled 3,488,104 passengers in 2025, almost exactly the figure of the year before. It is a single compact terminal, and from the arrivals hall to the kerb is a matter of minutes rather than corridors. Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, along with the car and its registration.

Do not plan around the airport tram. It has been suspended since summer 2023 while Rail Baltica's works at Ülemiste continue, and although its return was expected around 2026, we would not build a tight connection on it. A car to the Old Town takes 15 to 25 minutes outside rush hour, and to the D-terminal slightly less.

  • Kerbside pickup, the free defaultYour chauffeur waits at the meeting point named in the pre-arrival message and comes forward as you leave the terminal.

  • Flying on to a ferryTell us the sailing as well as the flight, and the chauffeur plans the run to the terminal on your ticket before you land.

The Helsinki ferry terminals.

The Port of Tallinn carried 8.3 million passengers in 2025, and 7.3 million of them sailed between Tallinn and Helsinki on Tallink, Viking Line and Eckerö Line, seven ships between them. The ships use the A-terminal and the D-terminal, which are close to each other but are not the same building. Your chauffeur collects at the ferry terminal on your ticket, so check the ticket rather than the operator's name before you send the booking.

Arrival times on the water shift less than flight times do, but a full ship emptying into the harbour streets slows every car leaving it for a quarter of an hour. Fifteen minutes of waiting are free at a terminal pickup, and the sailing is tracked so the chauffeur arrives with the ship; the full detail is on Tallinn ferry terminal transfers. For the Finnish side of the crossing, see chauffeur service in Helsinki.

Old City Harbour cruise quay.

Cruise ships made 118 calls at Tallinn in 2025, bringing nearly 190,000 passengers to the Old City Harbour. The quay is close enough to the walls that many guests simply walk up the hill, and on a fine morning that is the right call. A car makes sense for anything further out: Kadriorg Palace and park, the Pirita seafront, Telliskivi, or a disembarkation day with cases heading for TLL.

Shore days are booked by the hour, with the chauffeur waiting while you are inside and the return to the ship built into the plan with time to spare. Pickup point, timing and the all-aboard margin are on Tallinn cruise port transfers.

Terminal facts above were checked against public sources in October 2026. Ferry terminal use can change, so use the terminal printed on your ticket, and treat your chauffeur's message as the authority on where to walk.

VAT, road charges and the airport.

Tallinn adds very little to a fare. The question is less what it costs than who carries the uncertainty when a flight is late or a ship is slow to unload.

VAT is included in the price on every RYDES booking in Estonia, and so is any airport fee for collecting at TLL and any road charge on the route. None of it appears as a separate line after the ride. The one thing outside the quote is paid parking, if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges for it, such as a car park near the Old Town while you are inside a restaurant.

The local taxi market is large and competitive. Tallinn alone has 3,093 companies and sole traders holding taxi licences, and Bolt holds about 70 percent of the market. A taxi from the airport to the centre is typically about €10 to €20. That is cheap by European standards, and it is the honest benchmark for a solo traveller with a carry-on. A booked chauffeur is about a fixed class of car, a fixed number and someone already waiting, not about undercutting a short metered run.

How charges reach the passenger in Tallinn, by way of travelling. Taxi fares vary by company; the airport-to-centre figure is approximate.

Short distances cut both ways. On a 7 km run the price gap between a taxi and a booked car is small in absolute euros, and what you are paying for is the fixed class, the free hour after landing and the chauffeur already at the door. The comparison in full is on Tallinn taxi versus chauffeur.

How long it really takes.

Airport runs here are short by any capital's standards. The variable is not distance but timing: weekday rush on the roads in from Ülemiste, and the harbour when a ship has just come in.

Typical door-to-door driving times on common Tallinn routes, for a direct private car. The second column covers weekday peak and the half hour after a ship docks.

TLL to Pärnu1 h 55 to 2 h 152 h 20 to 2 h 45About 138 km; summer Fridays toward the coast run long

Winter matters less in Tallinn than visitors expect, because the city is used to it, but a heavy snowfall or icy morning still adds time, mostly on side streets and the hill streets of the Old Town. For a flight or sailing you cannot miss between December and March, add a third of the off-peak time again.

Further than the harbour.

Estonia is a small country with long empty roads between its towns. Intercity runs are priced as one fixed fare for the whole distance, so a slow afternoon on the road south is the operator's concern rather than yours.

What a Tallinn fare includes.

One number, in euros, settled before you travel.

VAT and road charges
VAT is included in the price, and so is any road charge on the route. The figure you accept is the figure on the receipt.
Airport fees
Any fee for collecting at Tallinn Airport is already counted. Ferry terminal and cruise quay pickups are handled the same way.
Gratuity is optional
The operator agreed what the job pays before accepting it, so the chauffeur's income does not hang on a tip. Add one at payment or leave it.
Flight and sailing tracking
Send the flight number or the sailing and we follow it. When the arrival moves, the pickup moves with it, at no charge.
An hour at TLL
Sixty minutes of waiting free from the real landing time. Fifteen minutes free at every other pickup, then 15-minute increments, and you are told before any waiting is billed.
Kerbside pickup
Collection at the meeting point your chauffeur names is the free default. Being met inside arrivals with your name on a sign is a paid add-on.
Free cancellation
Cancel or change free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours the booking is charged in full, because the car and chauffeur are held for you.
A licensed operator
Every Tallinn journey is run by an operator holding a taxi licence in Estonia, with drivers who hold the service card, checked before the operator can take bookings.
Child seats and pets
Child seats are supplied on request as a paid add-on, and fitted by the parent. Pets travel as a paid add-on; service animals always ride free.
Not in the fare
Paid parking, when you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges. Nothing else is added.

When you should not book us.

Tallinn is one of the easiest airport arrivals in Europe, and for plenty of trips a booked chauffeur is more than you need.

If you are travelling alone with a cabin bag, landing at TLL in the afternoon and staying in the Old Town, take a taxi or an app. The drive is about 7 km and 15 to 25 minutes, a taxi to the centre is typically about €10 to €20, and with Bolt holding about 70 percent of the market a car usually arrives quickly. If you are coming off a cruise ship for a morning in the Old Town, walk: the quay is at the foot of the hill. And do not count on the airport tram, which has been suspended since summer 2023.

A booked car is worth it when the conditions change: a same-day connection from TLL to a Helsinki sailing with checked bags, three or more people, small children and seats, a client who should be met by name, a late flight where you want the hour of waiting covered, or a run to Tartu, Pärnu or Riga that no city taxi wants to quote. That is most of why people book us here, but not every trip, and we would rather tell you. The numbers side by side are on Tallinn taxi versus chauffeur.

Tallinn questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How far is Tallinn Airport from the Old Town?

About 7 km by road. A private car takes 15 to 25 minutes outside rush hour and 25 to 40 minutes at weekday peak, with the last few minutes spent inside the Old Town's narrow streets. Rotermann and Kadriorg are a similar distance. See TLL to the Old Town.

Where does my chauffeur meet me at Tallinn Airport?

Kerbside pickup is the free default, and your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, together with the car and registration. Meet and greet inside the arrivals hall, with your name on a sign, is a paid add-on. Detail is on Tallinn airport transfers.

Is the airport tram running?

Not at the time of writing. The tram to Tallinn Airport has been suspended since summer 2023 while Rail Baltica's works at Ülemiste continue. Its return was expected around 2026, but we would not plan a tight connection on it. A car to the Old Town takes 15 to 25 minutes off-peak.

Can you take me from the airport to a Helsinki ferry?

Yes, and it is one of the most common Tallinn bookings. The A-terminal and D-terminal are each about 7 km from TLL, usually 15 to 22 minutes off-peak. Tell us your sailing and we collect at the ferry terminal on your ticket. See TLL to the D-terminal and TLL to the A-terminal.

Which terminal does my ferry use, A or D?

Use the terminal printed on your ticket. Tallink, Viking Line and Eckerö Line all sail between Tallinn and Helsinki, and terminal use can change, so we go by the ticket rather than the ferry company. The two terminals are close but have separate drop-off points. See ferry terminal transfers.

Do you meet cruise passengers at the Old City Harbour?

Yes. Tallinn had 118 cruise calls in 2025 and nearly 190,000 cruise passengers, with ships berthing at the Old City Harbour. For the Old Town itself you can walk, but a car suits Kadriorg, Pirita, Telliskivi and disembarkation runs to TLL. Shore days are booked by the hour. See Tallinn cruise port transfers.

Are your Tallinn chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Every journey is carried out by an operator holding a taxi licence in Estonia under the Public Transport Act, and in Tallinn those licences are handled by the Tallinn Transport Department. Drivers hold the national service card. RYDES checks licensing and insurance before an operator can take bookings, not ride by ride.

Is VAT included in Tallinn prices?

Yes. VAT is included in the price, and so is any airport fee at TLL and any road charge on the route. The only cost outside the quote is paid parking if you ask the car to wait somewhere that charges. The full comparison is on Tallinn taxi versus chauffeur.

Is a taxi cheaper than a chauffeur in Tallinn?

Often, for a short solo trip. A taxi from the airport to the centre is typically about €10 to €20, and Bolt holds about 70 percent of the market. A booked chauffeur makes more sense with checked bags and a ferry to catch, a group, children, a client arrival or a long run out of the city.

How much free waiting do I get?

Sixty minutes at Tallinn Airport, counted from the actual landing time rather than the timetable. Every other pickup, including ferry terminals and the cruise quay, includes 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you are told before it starts.

Can you drive me to Riga?

Yes. Riga is about 309 km from Tallinn, Old Town to Old Town, usually 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 15 off-peak. It is priced as one fixed fare, and every passenger should carry a passport or national ID card for the border. See Tallinn to Riga and chauffeur service in Riga.

Do you go to Tartu and Pärnu?

Yes, both as fixed fares to the address you give. Tartu is about 177 km from Tallinn Airport, usually 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 45 off-peak. Pärnu is about 138 km, roughly 1 hour 55 to 2 hours 15, longer on summer Fridays. See Tallinn to Tartu and Tallinn to Pärnu.

Can I hire a car and driver for the whole day?

Yes, with a two-hour minimum in 30-minute increments. The chauffeur waits between stops, which suits a day of meetings or a cruise shore day that takes in Kadriorg and Pirita. Paid parking at a stop is the one cost outside the quote. See hourly chauffeur hire in Tallinn.

When does Tallinn get busy?

Black Nights Film Festival runs 6 to 22 November 2026. In 2027, Tallinn Music Week is 8 to 11 April, Jazzkaar 24 April to 1 May, Tallinn Fringe 18 August to 18 September and the Tallinn Marathon weekend 10 to 12 September. Summer cruise days fill the harbour too. Book early for those dates, and look at corporate accounts for event teams.

How far ahead should I book?

At least 3 hours before pickup, so the operator can assign and brief a chauffeur. Reservations open up to a year ahead. Note that Estonia moves back to Eastern European Time on 25 October 2026, so check pickup times booked across that weekend.

What if my flight or ferry is delayed?

Give us the flight number or the sailing and we track it. A delay moves the pickup at no cost, with free airport waiting starting from the real landing time. If a flight is cancelled and you switch to the ship from Helsinki, dispatch re-briefs the chauffeur to the ferry terminal on your new ticket. See chauffeur service in Helsinki for the other side.
