Four ways a Zagreb booking works.

Zagreb is where business trips to Croatia start and where many coastal holidays begin by road. The bookings below cover both.

What is a Zagreb chauffeur service?

A Zagreb chauffeur service is a private car and driver reserved in advance at a fixed price, with the journey carried out by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Croatia under the Road Transport Act, the Zakon o prijevozu u cestovnom prometu. RYDES takes the booking and agrees the price; the licensed operator supplies the vehicle and the chauffeur. Nothing is metered and nothing is hailed. A ZAG airport transfer, an hourly car service in Zagreb and a black car for a ministry meeting all work the same way: class, time and total are settled first.

That matters most on the days when the city does not behave. A pre-booked car service in Zagreb does not change its number when the Slavonska avenue jams, when Advent fills the Lower Town in December, or when a concert empties Arena Zagreb at eleven at night. The quote you accept already contains VAT and any motorway toll on the route, and it is charged in euros. If you are weighing it against a cab or an app ride, the line-by-line comparison is on Zagreb taxi alternative.

The same booking reaches well beyond the city limits. Zagreb sits where the motorways to Slovenia, the Kvarner coast and Dalmatia meet, so a chauffeur here often drives the first leg of a longer trip: ZAG to Plitvice, ZAG to Ljubljana, Zagreb to Rijeka or the full run to Split by road. Companies with regular visitors use corporate travel in Zagreb for one invoice and traveller profiles across every one of those routes.

Arriving by air.

Zagreb has one passenger airport, Franjo Tuđman, on the Velika Gorica side of the Sava. It is close enough that the drive is rarely the problem; what changes is where in the city you are going.

Drive times are door to door and assume a direct private car. Peak here means the weekday rush, roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 18:00, when the approach roads across the Sava fill. Arena event nights and Advent weekends in December behave like peak at any hour. The Ljubljana row includes the border section between Croatia and Slovenia.

One terminal, and how the pickup works.

ZAG is a single modern building, which keeps arrivals simple. The details that matter are where the chauffeur waits, what time your flight really lands, and what you do if you would rather not be met at all.

Franjo Tuđman Airport.

The current passenger terminal at Zagreb airport opened on 28 March 2017 and handles every scheduled flight. Traffic has kept climbing: 4,721,564 passengers used it in 2025, against 4.32 million a year earlier. Even so it is a compact building, and the walk from baggage reclaim to the landside exit is short.

We do not publish a fixed meeting spot for ZAG, because operators collect from the point that works on the day. Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, along with the car, the registration and a phone number. Timing for the drive into the city is on ZAG to Zagreb centre.

  • Standard pickup, no chargeThe chauffeur waits at the point named in the pre-arrival message and you walk to the car.
  • Meet and greet, a paid add-onThe chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall with your name, useful for a first visit or a group.
  • Free waiting from touchdownSixty minutes from the actual landing time, not the timetable, which covers passport control on non-Schengen flights and the wait at the belt.

Hotels, the station and the Upper Town.

Most pickups inside the city are from a hotel door, an office lobby or the main railway station on King Tomislav Square. Donji grad is laid out on a grid with one-way streets and tram lines, so the chauffeur may stop on the nearest street the car can legally use and tell you which corner. That is normal here and costs you nothing.

Gornji grad, the medieval Upper Town above the main square, is mostly pedestrian, and cars can only reach parts of it. For a dinner or a hotel up there, the chauffeur confirms the closest drivable point in advance. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every city pickup.

Upper Town · 900 × 600
Car at the foot of the Upper Town in the evening

Arena Zagreb and Novi Zagreb.

Arena Zagreb sits in Novi Zagreb, south of the Sava and away from the old centre. The drive from the airport is about 13 km and does not cross the centre, which makes it an easy arrival on the day of an event.

The difficult part is leaving. When a sold-out concert ends, everyone wants a car at the same moment. A booked chauffeur has a time and an agreed spot set beforehand, and if the encore runs long the waiting rules apply rather than a surge. Times are on ZAG to Arena Zagreb.

Airport details were checked against public sources in October 2026. RYDES does not state a fixed ZAG meeting point, so rely on the pre-arrival message from your chauffeur for where to walk on the day.

Tolls, VAT and the new taxi rules.

Zagreb has no congestion charge and no low-emission toll for visitors. What reaches a fare here is motorway tolls on the way out of the city, VAT, and the way Croatia now regulates taxis and ride-hailing.

Croatian motorways are tolled by distance at booths and electronic lanes, and both directions out of Zagreb that most travellers use are on them. The A1 to Split costs about €26.40 for a car, and the A6 to Rijeka about €10.10. On a RYDES booking that money is already counted: you never stop to pay, and the toll does not appear as a separate line later. VAT is included in the price as well, so the euro figure you accept is what leaves your card, with paid parking the only thing outside it.

The rules for taxis are changing. On 3 July 2026 the Croatian Parliament passed amendments to the Road Transport Act. Under them, cities issue a permit for each taxi vehicle, taxis carry TX plates, Uber and Bolt become carriers with the same duties as taxi firms, the minister may set maximum fares, passengers in an app must see the maximum price and the planned route, and penalties get stricter. The date these take effect has not been confirmed. None of it alters how RYDES works: the operator that drives you is licensed for passenger transport in Croatia, and your price was fixed before the trip. Tourist tax, €1.86 per person per night in Zagreb, is collected by your hotel or apartment, not by the car.

How charges reach the passenger on a Zagreb airport or city journey. Bus figures are the published Pleso prijevoz fare; taxi and app fares vary and are not quoted here.

A taxi from the rank is a reasonable choice for a short hop inside the city. The fixed price earns its keep on the longer legs, where tolls, a detour or a slow border queue would otherwise land on you, and on the airport run when you want the car waiting before you walk out. More detail on Zagreb taxi versus chauffeur.

Real driving times from ZAG.

Distances out of Zagreb are modest by European standards. The ranges below widen the free-flow figure for ordinary traffic, then again for the times when the city and the motorways actually fill.

Summer changes the motorway figures more than the city rush does. From late June to August, Saturdays on the A1 and A6 fill with holiday traffic heading for the coast, and the border section towards Slovenia can queue on changeover weekends. Inside Zagreb, December evenings during Advent are slower than any weekday rush. For a flight you cannot miss, add half the off-peak time again.

Zagreb as the starting point.

Every long run from Zagreb is quoted as a single fare for the whole distance, tolls included, so a queue at the border or a slow Saturday on the A1 changes nothing for you.

Ljubljana is in Slovenia. Croatia and Slovenia are both in the Schengen area, but every passenger should still carry a passport or national identity card, and the licensed operator for the Slovenian side is confirmed by dispatch at booking rather than sold automatically. Which car, for Zagreb.

Capacity here is the realistic figure with luggage, not the brochure number. For a Plitvice day with walking gear and coats, or a coastal transfer with suitcases, go one class up.

When you should not book us.

Zagreb airport is close to the city and has a cheap, regular bus. For some travellers that is the right answer, and a chauffeur is not.

If you are on your own with a cabin bag and staying near the bus station, the Pleso prijevoz airport bus runs about every 30 minutes, costs €9.00 one way and lets children under seven ride free. The ZET 290 city bus also serves the airport, on a slower route at a lower cost. Nobody needs a private car for that trip in daylight on an ordinary weekday.

Book a chauffeur when those conditions do not hold: three or more people, where one car beats three bus tickets; checked bags, a pram or a wheelchair; a late arrival; a destination away from the bus station such as the Upper Town, Arena Zagreb or Samobor; or any onward leg to Plitvice, Ljubljana or the coast, where no airport bus helps. The full comparison is on Zagreb taxi alternative.

Zagreb questions.

If yours is not here, dispatch answers around the clock at +1 888 881 7933 or support@rydes.co.

How far is Zagreb airport from the city centre?

About 14 km by road from Franjo Tuđman Airport to Ban Jelačić Square. A private car usually takes 20 to 30 minutes off-peak and 35 to 50 minutes in the weekday rush. The main railway station is a little closer, at about 12 km. See ZAG to Zagreb centre.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at ZAG?

Your chauffeur names the exact meeting point in the message sent before you land, with the car, the registration and a phone number. The standard pickup costs nothing; meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board is a paid add-on. Details are on the Zagreb airport transfer page.

Are your Zagreb drivers licensed?

Yes. RYDES arranges the booking, and the journey is carried out by an operator licensed for passenger transport in Croatia under the Road Transport Act. Licensing and insurance are checked before an operator can take a RYDES booking.

What changes with Croatia's new taxi law?

On 3 July 2026 Parliament passed amendments to the Road Transport Act: city permits for each taxi vehicle, TX plates, Uber and Bolt treated as carriers with the same duties as taxi firms, possible maximum fares set by the minister, the maximum price and planned route shown in the app, and stricter penalties. The date they take effect has not been confirmed. A RYDES price is fixed at booking either way.

Are tolls and VAT included in the price?

Yes. VAT is included in the price, and so are motorway tolls on your route: about €26.40 on the A1 to Split and about €10.10 to Rijeka for a car. Paid parking is the only cost outside the quote. See Zagreb taxi versus chauffeur.

Is the tourist tax part of my fare?

No. Zagreb's tourist tax is €1.86 per person per night in 2026, unchanged from the year before, and it is charged by your hotel or apartment. It has nothing to do with the car.

Should I just take the airport bus?

Sometimes, yes. The Pleso prijevoz bus runs to Zagreb bus station about every 30 minutes for €9.00 one way, and under-sevens ride free. Alone with light luggage and staying near the bus station, it is good value. A chauffeur makes more sense for groups, heavy bags, late arrivals or any destination the bus does not reach.

How much free waiting do I get at the airport?

Sixty minutes from the actual landing time, tracked against the aircraft. Other pickups include 15 minutes. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute increments at the class rate, and you are told before it starts.

Can you take me from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes?

Yes. Entrance 1 is about 145 km from the airport, usually 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 40 by car, longer on summer days. Book it one way, as a return day trip by the hour, or on the way to the coast. See Zagreb to Plitvice and Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb.

Can I go from Zagreb airport straight to Ljubljana?

Yes. It is about 152 km, usually 1 hour 45 to 2 hours 05, more on holiday weekends at the crossing. Carry a passport or identity card. The licensed operator for the Slovenian side is confirmed by dispatch at booking. See ZAG to Ljubljana and the Ljubljana city page.

How long is the drive from Zagreb to Split?

About 410 km on the A1, usually 4 hours 30 to 5 hours, and up to 6 hours on a summer Saturday. It is one fixed fare with the toll inside. First class is worth considering for a drive that long. See Zagreb to Split.

Do you drive to Rijeka and the Kvarner coast?

Yes. Rijeka is about 171 km from the airport, 2 hours 05 to 2 hours 25 in normal traffic, on the A1 and A6 through Gorski kotar. The toll of about €10.10 is inside the price. See Zagreb to Rijeka.

When is Advent Zagreb and should I book ahead?

The market runs from late November into early January; the 2025–26 edition was 29 November to 7 January, and 2026 dates are not yet confirmed. The tourist board says it was voted best Christmas market in Europe three years running, and CNN listed it among the world's best for 2025. Evenings in the Lower Town get very busy, so book early. See Advent Zagreb.

Can you collect us after a concert at Arena Zagreb?

Yes. Book the return with the outbound and the chauffeur waits at an agreed point at an agreed time. The arena is about 13 km from the airport and south of the river. See Arena Zagreb transfers.

Can I hire a car and driver for the whole day?

Yes. Hourly hire has a two-hour minimum and runs in 30-minute steps after that, with the car waiting between stops. It suits Samobor, Varaždin or a day of meetings. See hourly chauffeur in Zagreb and corporate travel.

How far ahead do I need to book in Zagreb?

At least three hours before pickup, so the operator can assign and brief a chauffeur, and up to a year in advance. For Advent weekends, Arena event nights and summer Saturdays towards the coast, book as early as you can. Dispatch answers around the clock on +1 888 881 7933.
